I’ve purchased a retirement property in Aguadilla, a town/city on the island’s northwest. A stunning, beautiful bay. English spoken everywhere as many military retirees live there (from former Ramey Airforce Base). Decent small mall with movie theaters, with huge malls in Mayagüez, not too far away. Great places/restaurants, to eat. My adult children will remain living in N.Y.C. so I can plan visits during the warm weather, and occasionally for Christmas - so I can see the Rockefeller Center tree.

Columbus didn't discover PR. People were already living there. The Taino discovered it.

Columbus discovered Puerto Rico for the European country of Spain. Like all the advancements that the world indulges in for a more comfortable life were invented by people of European decent. The car, airplane, light bulb, telephone, refrigerator, heating, air conditioning, farming equipment, medicine, computer, etc. etc. etc.

@iamJROD I get what you are saying about he discovered it for the people in Spain, but that still does not change the fact that Columbus was a thief who raped, murdered, and all kinds of other acts of violence. Kind of just like all of the things that you mentioned That was invented by European decent, majority of those things were stolen and taking credit for through acts of violence just like Christopher Columbus did. Not say all of the Inventions, but majority of them. However, this video indicates that Columbus discovered this place, not for Spain. Basically just like with everything else, it's saying that Columbus discovered it. Please explain to me how you discover something that's already there with people living there? Just like they say Columbus discovered America. But history doesnt the acts of terrible things that Columbus did, Like stealing for example. Which is a big part of the European culture, just steal and take credit for things that were never their own to begin with

First, the government needs to lower the sales tax. At 11.5% that's too high, especially for its residents which on average is lower than mainland U.S. Also, the federal government needs to exempt Puerto Rico from the Jones Act. It makes many basic product much higher than on mainland U.S. since most products have to be shipped in from the U.S. and not another country.

@@richardarroyo5136 Some Mafioso is getting paid off of this hence why they have the Jones Act. This will be hard to do since someone with a lot of power isn't going to be willing to let go of that free money coming to them. Puerto Rican's have to become aware of this, among many other things that hold the island back & why our people suffer as a result. We must gain our independence & break away from america is we are going to survive. Why do you think Tronald Dump didn't lift the Jones Act for 16 day's after Hurricane Maria? He did that on purpose so that Puerto Rican's will leave the Island and him & his people can come in a take over. White american's are good for this. Why do you think so many white "hipsters" are taking over the island for pennies to the dollar & some of them for free? I know Hedge fund millionaires basically taking over the island for almost nothing. They need to get the fuck off the island and the land & property needs to go right back to the owner's of the island. The problem is, culturally, & generally speaking, Puerto Rican's are lazy bc of the people that were put into power that crippled us. It's time for us to grow up & start controlling our own destiny. If not we will be destroyed as a people & culture.

In Puerto Rico, your first house purchased is tax exempt; you will not pay taxes, unless you buy a second house. Florida keeps saying it's a great destination for retirement, but their first house purchased in Florida, is too highly taxed. Yet, in Puerto Rico, you will only be paying water and light bill, and no property taxes for your first home; it's the reason why many US Americans are buying houses in Puerto Rico. Houses in Puerto Rico are less costly than those sold in the US mainland, for example a single family house with 4 bedrooms and two bath rooms can be found for around $ 70,000- $100,000, and in Florida, it can easily cost $200,000 through $235,000 , which is much costly, yet not taxed exempt as in PR. In addition, Puerto Rico is warm year round, so you will not need to heat your home. You will see that all US mega stores are in all 78 Puerto Rican cities, such as: JCpenny, Sears, K-Mart, Taco Bell, Mc.Donald, Walmarts, Golden Corral, pizza huts, etc.

We live in Miami, FL. We recently purchased a new construction vacation /retirement home in PR. Our home in PR would cost twice as much in Miami. So I agree, the cost of housing in PR makes PR a good retirement destination. I agree that the cost of groceries in PR are 20% higher than Miami. And I can't find the same brands in PR, and inferior products cost more. So our work around is Southwest Airlines two free checked bags. We purchase stalpes, rice, canned goods, household items in Miami for 20% less and 5% less sales tax. We travel to PR with four pieces of packed luggage, and return with three pieces of empty luggage. Our way to skirt the Jones Act. We only purchase meat and produce in PR. Sales tax in PR is 11.5%, but only 7% at restaurants, the same as Miami. Our plan is to keep our Miami condo and split our retirement between Miami and PR. So far it's working out amazingly.

Inferior products? You must be shopping in the wrong stores. And thousands of products are available at a fair market value considering the shipping and distribution costs involved. That's what I saw when I went. You go through all of that dance-around to save 20% which you could be spending into the PR economy and helping it grow. But no, you want to "skirt" and scheme your way through. Thanks, but no thanks.

Only retire to PR if you are well off financially, and do not depend on picking up work for extra money. It's also advisable you be in generally good health, with no pre-existing conditions. You think it's a pain to get appointments in the states sometimes? You won't want to deal with it here. The infrastructure here is severely lacking as well. Municipalities are less than reliable. This island is the perfect example of the grass looking greener on the other side of the fence. Why else would soooooo many Puerto Ricans leave for the mainland???

Puerto Rico is the best. We have hurricanes, earthquakes, tremors, the cost of food is very high and we also have a lot of criminals and violence. If you don't speak Spanish you are in trouble. A lot of people only speak Spanish. There aren't many specialists and even if you find one you will probably have to travel across the island. Plus they will see you whenever they feel like it, you will need to make an appointment. Utilities are also expensive. Electricity,water and gas, very expensive. Plus, we have power outages a lot, like for no reason, can be gone for hours or even days, but you will still get that bill. So, you will need a generator and or solar power, which are also expensive. Oh, did I mention that water is also turned off for no reason, so you will need a water reserve tank connected to the house. Plus , you have to store water in gallons and containers, you know like for cooking. I personally don't use the water from the reserve to cook, just for the toilet, for doing the dishes and bathing. But this is my country, my home and I love it. I lived in CT for nearly twenty years. Big difference, I tell you. Wait, we also have mosquitoes, a lot of them. They will tear you up in minutes and can give you dengue fever which can be fatal. The fact that people have to store water and sometimes don't cover it, is why we have mosquitoes. They reproduce in clear water. We have them all year especially in the summer. How can we survive here? Because we have gotten use to hardship. It is not easy but it is what it is. I live in the rural area, yes in the countryside. We can raise chickens and plant our food. I have a nice cement house. It's good enough for me. So unless you can go without all the comforts for some times then this little island is not for you.

And also that Americans from PR and the ones that live there are proud of their Island, Culture and history, and rightly so. But yet, most of all, I noticed all the litter, filth and garbage all over much of the island. What is that all about? I wld be embarrassed. WHAT GIVES? There are a lot of inaccuracies in this video leading me to believe that you have never lived on the island. There are between 5 and 6 million Puerto Ricans living in the continental United States. They reside in various numbers in all 50 states. You failed to mention that Puerto Rico was closely linked to SPAIN for 4 centuries before Spain ceded the island to the United States government after losing the Spanish-American war as part of the treaty to end the war. Puerto Ricans are not a homogenized society. Though a lot of their DNA comes from the Spanish, Native Americans (Tainos) and Africans inhabitants and mixtures thereof in varying degrees, there was also immigration to the island of other Europeans that added to the mixture (French, Portuguese, Corsicans, Italians, Irish, Scottish, German, Dutch and Lebanese, Chinese and others). About 30% of Puerto Ricans have French surnames as the French were the second largest group of Europeans to immigrate to the island after the Spanish. A Puerto Rican can be "white" or "black" or anything in between. You mispronounced the names of the foods, especially mamposteao (mam-po-steh-aw-oh), empanadillas (em-pan-ah-dee-yas). The national dish of Puerto Rico is pernil (roast pork) and arroz con gandules (rice and peas). Health care is not on the same level as that on the continental U.S. Doctor's visits are on a first come, first served system. Almost all of the doctors offices follow this system and a lot of wasted time is spent at the doctor's office, often a whole day is wasted. Doctors often want to be paid in cash and will not accept insurance cards as they want you to be reimbursed by sending in the paperwork yourself to the insurance company. A stay in the hospital requires the patient to bring all of the necessary paraphernalia one would need: bed sheets, pillows, blankets, towels, toiletries, in short everything. Many of the staff including nurses do not speak English. The best doctors and specialists have left the island. You stated Dorado was close to cities in the western part of Puerto Rico. This is inaccurate. Dorado is very close to San Juan and is practically a suburb. Old San Juan is not a cheap place to live, especially for retirees who depend mainly on social security payments. It is a highly attractive locality and actually quite expensive to buy a property there or to rent; one can expect to pay premium dollars. This is because it is a desirable area due to it's colonial historical past and tourism is big here. It is cheaper to live in other parts of the island. Sadly, there is a lot of crime in Puerto Rico. Some areas are worse than others, but it is a problem. The murder rate is also very high and this is mostly because of the illegal drug problem on the island and the many drug addicts who steal and break into homes to satisfy their addiction. It would be good to learn some Spanish because Spanish is king in Puerto Rico, especially as one gets away from the San Juan area. Everything is done in Spanish. It is a good idea for someone who is interested in living in Puerto Rico to take a trial run first, renting on a month-to-month basis. Puerto Rico is not for everyone and people either love it or hate it.

I wish someone have had warned me. If I knew, I wouldn't have come. Its incredibly difficult to find out how things are here before coming over. Isla del encanto - is in reality island of an issues. Everything is problem here. So consider it very carefully. Its difficult, its dysfunctional, its a mess, and only positive thing i can say is - the weather is nice. (But so it is in many other countries, with less difficulties for outsiders)
@TaxGoddess
@TaxGoddess 3 года назад
So, give us more details! Like what are the issues, specifically?
@Dexterosa
@Dexterosa 3 года назад
@@TaxGoddess Healthcare is problem - especially if you are older. From access (you might need specialist - and there just won't be any. If you find some, regardless its a quiet emergency - they won't care, the first open appointment is in 4 months... If you go to regular doctor who has hours from 8:00 - 1 pm, don't be shocked that at 11:30 office is closed... He is done for the day 😜. In certain areas locals pay medivac to be lifted and taken to Miami. Neighbor did it when he had severe chest pain - suspected heart attack which it turned out to be, per what they say - not many people made it back home from the hospital in that particular area. 2) what is problem - is that everything is problem - what i mean by that - you want to get internet. Have an appointment, company won't show up. You call (they normally don't answer phones here, and if they do - its a lottery they tell you each time different stuff. Locals go everywhere in person, waiting endless filas (lines). If call they will call several times to ask same question and if answers match - thats prob. What it is. Upon your arrival and attempt to get an ID, or DL - you get to go to DTOP office (they call it Cesco ... don't ask -I don't know..) there in precovid era - line starts forming at 4:00. And is usually damn long. But only first 70 people receive the ID. Rest has to try another day... Nowadays you have to make appointment...i think you get an idea how that might look like. You come to an office to get something taken care off - you spoke with someone, brought documents... Waited hour and half in line (,btw they might turn you away cause you were shirts and flip flops - happened to me... Yeah, you will be bumping here and there into covert hate to nonIslanders, doesn't matter if you Spanish speaking, Cuba, worst they are towards Dominicans btw., If you speak English only - you might not be aware of the things on purpose they will do to you, and they won't want talk to you even if they speak English. (Exception is an Uber - you have a chance to get someone who does speak. But uber functions only in San Juan... Don't use it for trip across the island or you will get stuck in middle if nowhere. Public transportation is theoretically here (or so they say) but practically non-existent. Many car rental are only for locals only, or you can't return car elsewhere. So stick with big american company - you git it - transportation is a Problem. Payments - a problem, due to enormous frauds, checks, money orders..., Forget about it. Many places won't even take credit card. You have to carry cash (criminality is extremely high - i will get to it, so its great idea carry cash around 😂). If you plan to get money through Western Union, spare yourself a problem - you won't be able to withdraw (no matter what they tell you in USA, on island is valid this: we can do whatever we want, usa is far 😂). Crime: PR could be best described as skatchy. Throughout. You will have falling apart buildings, streets that even uber driver asks if you sure this is where the place us as it doesn't look safe. But crime - shooting happens anywhere even in "most safe" tourist areas through the day. Bunch of guys in masks with machine guns will execute average poor looking dude in the parking lot. Carjacking, gun points, robberies and shootings - anytime anywhere. I live in "safe" area... Shootings any ither week. Not all gets the news attention...🤷🏻‍♀️ . Trust me its not safe. Many locals won't stick nose out of house after 6 pm. Police is a problem. They won't do their job. And if they got to - not properly. You as a victim will be for bitter very bitter rude awakening to reality. Finding place is a problem. In SJ the greed is doing its work, out of SJ its cheap but again - its a problem. My first place - i got contract (in spanish of course), i had it translated and whoa - except of paying rent I would agree to fix plumbing (again a problem in PR) and roof (thats another problem in PR, after everpresent cocroaches and rats), and paint a facade, or pay for it, upon end of contract... (They really thought i would sign this without translation???) You getting idea, they try to take advantage of you big times and naive are feeling sorry for them, "poor colony"... Next place had leaking roof. Called owner... Owner sent a guy to fix it. With expandable foam... It didn't last long of course...whole process again and again...it was lovely hurricane mopping water :) they won't fix it properly, and they will charge you same money, they won't pay for your damage... But feel free to find a decent place for yourself... Also addresses - is a problem. Its POBox shared down the street by many. Forget the postal services - delivery with receipt. Down there it is for anyone to pick ;) (out of SJ area). The maps are getting better (if you have signal - that is not getting better much) and usually navigation is - third flamboyan tree turn left, after you hit 8th pothole (please avoid the iron rod sticking out of middle of the road from asphalt) you will see yellow house than you turn right until you see a stump. (God forbid stump fall apart meanwhile, then you lost without signal in middle if nowhere and without Spanish good luck. Locals will just walk away and leave you to your own destiny. Problem on your side is not problem on theirs. And theirs comfort is above all... Car - is a problem... here they don't take care of them at all. seen few burning cars on side ...you will be surprised by what is on the road... technically. They usually sell when they think they got out all its worth, and now its on next person to fall apart. In other words is risky. You can transport your car from Jacksonville Fla I believe, to PR, about 1600$. But once you get to pick up car at port (yeah line is waiting for you. Usual wait time was whole long day. I know someone who got to try 3x... Three days) you will be handed excise tax to pay. Nope, you can't know up front. Its surprise. But don't be surprised if its 2.000 and higher...even if your car is old. And again - i would be careful buying cars here. Even from dealers... My car - i risked it, bought car, few months later transmission broke on me. Got car towed to mechanic, paid for transmission, and waited, and waited.. each weak its gonna be the next one (island manana system ;) long story short, spent thousands on car rental, just to receive a call from mechanics wife, thst they have transmission and they can fix car, but they will give me 1000$ for my car because they can fix car for themselves...after sometime in PR this shadiness shouldn't surprise you..., But they will friendly smile at you. First. ;) Everything is a problem. Even buying bread is a problem lol (no thats a joke)

Thank you for the information much is correct but some must be revisited. Puerto Rican cuisine for example, “Mofongo” is a Puerto Rican dish and yes, the other Caribbean Islands have their variations but we Puerto Rican’s put “Mofongo” on the map! It’s not an American inspired dish? Where DID that come from? Alexa and Google will probably concur with this information. But I am BG (before google) and I am also Carribean and I can tell you that an American inspired dish in Puerto Rico is nothing but pasta with spam ham and frozen corn! Beans cooked with powder condiments in little packets of msg, yes these are examples of American influences dishes in P.R. Sir! These taste great like “Mayuketchup” don’t get me wrong but naming “Mofongo” as an American influenced dish is incorrect information! Don’t mess with my Mofongo🙏🏼
