FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF FLORIDA, AMERICA: as a Scottish person who's been fascinated by America - the USA - since childhood, it was so amazing to be invited by the US Embassy to the UK for the first time in America. SUBSCRIBE to my channel for more Scottish reactions: / @shaunvlog
It's awesome to see so many people from America who celebrate their Scottish and Irish ancestry so keenly, and come on to RU-vid to seek out people celebrating these cultural nuances. You only have to look at the success of the Try channel or Facts channel to see how people love seeing Irish People trying American things for example.
Here are 8 of my first impressions of FLORIDA, Orlando, where we spent time visiting Disney World, Cocoa Beach, The Kennedy Space Center and more.

A good trip would be following the Rocky Mountains from Colorado Springs (Pikes Peak) through Colorado (Eutis Park), going north through Wyoming (Jackson Hole), Yellowstone Ntl Park, swing over to Yosemite Ntl Park, on up into Idaho or Montana and across the border to Calgary Alberta Canada. Satisfy your inner cowboy along the way.

Jim Tomlinson or squids on Spring Break after deployment or A-school. JAX was where Georgia spilled over. The border patrol base was not far bc we hung out at the same clubs off base. Enlisted club could ruin a lady’s reputation and the towny chicks were desperate for fresh new men by 1987 Top Gun had an evil agenda. My first Mardigras was a mission to escape. USS Forrestal cruised the Mississippi and parked at the French Quarter (Mills Mall chain ). I had no idea that cursed hunk of a disaster had nothing better to do than pimp squids to townies for THAT particular Fleet Week torqued me off. I should have been graduating from Loyola with Class of 1982/3 by the Marian Jesuit year 1987-1988 Nobody cares about our souls and today is full of scammers and crap. Rich kids who did well with bitcoins and ignored the generations who made gaming go massive, just fill social networks and demand sob stories from stock photos and pasted sob stories. AND ask for bank statements after you’ve “won” a $200 or whatever. Kids throwing thousands at each other, make a joke they can’t read, or understand, then spew hate and filth about my simplest basic bootcamp stuff. They won’t even help with spare gear they’ve got laying around. Too rich and too ignorant to do things. Careless and lethal. No matter what you heard or seen about Americans veteran services. It’s a lie. Extremely ignorant and bigoted people expect women to get so desperate we will tolerate any kind of abuse, to get housing in buildings under construction in sanctuary cities while shredding and gutting benefits we paid for. 18 hour shifts 1.25/hour no tips? (Marxism). They’ve been stealing our lands every time we serve. Two grandfathers passed within months and my ex couldn’t understand my grief. Didn’t care Dad was high ranking, that bitch was gonna bag himselfish a towny. Nope but clever to destroy my family being typical so he could work my only kid like a slave for his family “swift boating” fascists into our military is high treason. (Sorry, can’t edit now)

Kelly Ray Hill when my ex was attached to USS Forrestfire, people shielded their eyes when he got to the French beaches. His legs were GLEAMING! Just like Dad’s when I first saw his legs in gym shorts! When we got to the Holliday Fitness and racquet club in 1979. No one was around, so I just laughed! “My God Dad, you need some sun on those legs! (shielding my eyes like I did to my big brother) That can’t be healthy and you don’t drink milk! Just get to the beach, ASAP!” We spoke Eartha Kitt and HMS Pinafore by then. I still didn’t understand cousin Ntozake’s poetry, but we saw her film. “What good is a worthless commodity on an open market?” There were just too many cousins around the Beltway! He was Raised in KC Missouri Mom in KC, Kansas Where Bears and Royal ? Were born and raised in Hogs, Bison, chickens and Angus. Including 1965 Bears, Seals and Sayers And KC Chiefs Back in the 1970s, Big George was 6’3”, 273 pounds. His shortest kid was 6’3”, Dad 6”0’ I’m 5’5.5 and the weight of a normal Chinese shot putter I still haven’t gotten my high school scores from 1982-1983 yet. Floridian here. Florida is BIG! So many things to do outside the theme parks. Everglades with the big fan boats, fishing everywhere, even rent a charter and go deep sea fishing on the coasts. There’s the natural springs that are crystal clear and emerald green and great for seeing hordes of manatees in the winter time. Siesta key on the gulf coast has gorgeous white sandy beaches. Much better than coco beach. Don’t know why they took you there... Keys are always a good time. And if you’re here June-October the Indian lagoon (near Kennedy space center) is know for its bioluminescence algae and jellyfish. You can go kayaking at night and light up the water when you paddle. Plus always have a chance to watch a rocket launch. Just have to time it right. Plus much more. So much to do here that it’ll definitely take multiple trips to explore everything. Glad you enjoyed your taste of Florida.

Fun Fact about FL: The more North you go the more Southern you find, the more South you go the more Hispanics you find. You must have gone to either Bass Pro Shop or Cabela's for the fishing shop expedition. NASA has all of their launches out of Cape Kennedy/Canavaral. The main control center is at the Johnson Space Center outside of Houston. You need to spend 3 or 4 days at Disney World. You can spend all day in one of the four parks and still not see everything. This does not even account for Sea World or Universal Studios that are also in the Orlando area. Shaun, I think I have mentioned this before when you were talking about coming back to the US to explore in depth: see what you can work out with the US Embassy and the British Embassy in doing a documentary about what it's like for a citizen of the UK and particularly Scotland to do a massive tour of the United States. You and Teka would need to essentially come over for about a year and probably get a small Class C RV to travel the country. Theo & Bee from the Indie Project had that exact situation this past summer. I am not exactly sure who sponsored their trip but they were furnished a Class C RV by Winnebago. They have their own RU-vid channel called THE INDIE PROJECT, so reach out to them and see how they managed to pull that off. You could literally spend one complete year if not 2 traveling the United States doing nothing but visiting Scottish festivals. I have mentioned to you before that we have at least seven here in Texas alone throughout the year, and that does not even include the North Texas Irish music festival in Dallas the third weekend of March. The Midland Scottish and Irish Festival is the second weekend of March and then the San Antonio Highland Games and Celtic music festival is the weekend closest to April 6th unless that happens to be Easter weekend. And may there is the state Scottish Festival in Decatur Texas outside of Dallas again and I think there is also another festival and Sherman Texas outside of the Fort Worth/ Dallas area. The second full weekend of October we have the Kerr County Celtic Festival and Ingram Texas at our replica of Stonehenge. I know that there is also a festival in Tyler Texas in East Texas and Celt -oberfest which is held close to Halloween and then the year ends with Scottish Festival and Highland Games in Salado, Texas the second weekend of November. And that's just one state. We haven't even started to discuss Burns Night dinners in January, either. You mentioned that you used to work for some major corporations based out of the US when you lived in London a few years back. My suggestion would be to go through the two embassies to plan the trip, and then if you still have contacts with those corporations, one of which I am assuming is a financial corporation, get them to be sponsors to help fund your trip. After you've got that, then get with Winnebago or a similar manufacturer of recreational vehicles to provide you with a RV for use while you're here in the United States. Again, they would be a sponsor for your documentary and they could do a vinyl wrap on the vehicle advertising their company and any other backers that you have as well as whatever you're going to title that documentary. I know that this is very simplistic and rudimentary, but you're a smart lad and you are excellent with your RU-vid vlogs. I think that you could come about getting this to work if you just put a little brain sweat into it ! Oidche mhath, son. Regards to Teka and the family.

Going to the Gathering in the Clans on Grandfather's Mountain in NC? Amazing fun. So interesting to see how many strangers from all over the country look like the members of their clan when the clans have their march. If you're interested in the Scottish in America, you might also want to check out the Scotch Irish who many migrated to the Appalachian Mountains. As for Florida, it's about the size of Italy. The Gulf beaches are much better than the Atlantic ones, plus the Gulf is much calmer. Any body of water or canal in Florida is unsafe due to alligators. You were very wise to stay away from the edge of the water. Alligators can travel fast out of the water on land and they can catch unwary prey, including people, on the edge of the water. "Don't Go Swimming" signs don't just mean to stay out of the water, but also keep away from the edge of the water. Also sharks can go on the beach for prey also. So if there are shark warnings, don't wade or walk along the edge of the water. One thing you might be interested is the Everglades. The Everglades is like another world with various wildlife, including flamingos. Also renting an airboat in the Everglades is an amazing experience. There are tons of things in Florida to do. Each city in Florida has very distinctive personality, more so than some other states.

Best activity on those hot Florida summer days is visiting any of the hundreds of springs throughout the state, floating down a crystal clear 70 degree lazy river is so relaxing and most have picnicking/camping areas available with stores and cafes, you can snorkel and even scuba dive in some of the larger ones. Most visitors don’t get to experience the springs because there are so many different things to do when vacationing in Florida but it’s well worth a day trip to see the real beauty within the state. I live in Florida and every person who doesn't live here only see the tourist parts of Florida which isn't the real Florida. We are about farms. We have more horse farms than Kentucky even. I live on the nature coast outside of crystal river. Fishing, scalloping, manatees, horse farms. National as well as international 1 million $ competitions happen in Ocala, Venice, Jacksonville, and Wellington. To avoid the biggest heat and humidity, come between December and April. Orlando is a mess. And yes, I have a four door Dually truck to pull my horses. lol In my town, we have nothing but "mom and pop" stores and restaurants. no big stores. And if you haven't been out on a air boat in the swamps then you have to do that. At night, use an LED light because the gator eyes shine back red while all the other wildlife shine back green. If you want a nice beach, visit the gulf coast. Anna Maria Island and Long Boat Key are great. Cocoa Beach is murky and over populated. It's a gross beach. My home state is Tennessee though. If you want advice on a visit to TN (or back here to FL), definitely contact me.

I grew up in Michigan and Disney World was every kid's dream, too. I've been there a few times and loved it.

Come to Charleston SC and visit the First Scott’s Church and the Scottish Rite. Lots of Scottish influences in Charleston.

Hey Shaun! I really enjoyed your video. I have lived in Florida my whole life and love it here! Orlando is its own whacky world but can be fun in the cooler months lol. I live pretty close to Miami and its a different whacky world down here. I highly recommend visiting the Florida Keys and the Everglades! if you ever need a South Florida tour guide let me know. 😁 Are you aware of the Scottish American Society? Each local area has a locale chapter with resources (ie. The South Florida Scottish American Society). They attend all local Scottish heritage events such as Highland games. They might be able to help you with your cultural journey you mentioned at the end of the video. I hope you are planning on attending the Highland games in North Carolina this summer. They are some of my favorite! I also highly recommend a visit to Asheville! The food and beer there is some of my favorite too!

If you’re wanting to come back to Florida to fish, you should come to the west side of the state and fish in the Gulf. Crystal River and Homosassa Florida have world class inshore and offshore fishing. Also you can swim the manatees and go scalloping as well depending on what time of the year you come. It is a beautiful area. It is called the Nature Coast, it is a small town feel and very nice people!

Born in Naples florida... Florida is a big state which sights change in nearly every county. Great state to explore. Btw the county I was born in is bigger than the state I'm living in at the moment. Florida is a big state....

I've lived in Naples for 38 years, and I've seen it change quite a bit. Many more people than there used to be, but it's still a very beautiful town.
