I love the one about blowing the water back out of your tube that is super helpful thanks! A synthetic puffy vest is a great layer for targeting your core and avoiding sweat. For mild freezing weather and deep snow with water crossings, lightweight rubber boots, neoprene socks and calf sleeves is a great way to stay dry without sweating. I literally always drive with the windows down and the heater blasting 😂 the huskies love their window!

I live in Southern California. It’s 530 pm, 65° out and I’m in shorts, t-shirt and flip flops, sipping on a cold beer in my backyard, enjoying the evening, grilling on my bbq and playing on my phone.

😂 glad to know I’m not the only weirdo :) keeping track of heart rate on that sheet (or if you have a power meter on your winter bike) also really helps dial in at what effort you start sweating a bunch, etc and fine tune sweat management… otherwise, every winter is like starting from scratch for me!! Ride on!!!

Another outstanding video. Sweat control is my major problem. No matter what I sweat profusely. So now I just carry an extra layer and change out if I have to. My favorite add on is a vest during a ride. Thanks for the tips. My wife thinks I'm nuts because I'm taking notes. My memory is a sieve. Take care, Al

Coldest ride for me was -28 with windshield. Went well as I drass right with layers and took a thermos with hot tea. Issues I ran in to were suspension oils getting thicker but with slower speeds not really an issue. Goggle kept freezing up so ended up removing them but then eyelids would freeze 😂 chamical toe warmers are a must. I also have electric socks for colder rides.

Great video - drives home the message staying warm starts with the rider, that there is no “magic” piece of gear. Loved the breakdown of the differing, but connected, areas to think about. I think Kurt and I have talked about this even more than tire pressure!

Thanks for another great video, I've got my gear pretty much figured out with the exception of my feet. I was using an old pair of LL Bean snowshoe boots, feet where always warm but the boot was very big, heavy and very very high. Picked up a lower cut Keen but now I miss the high cut and weirdly enough. My left foot is colder than my right, going to try some gaiters and maybe a heated sock or toe warmers.

The spreadsheet is a brilliant idea! I live in Alaska and every year I have to re-learn which gear to use when I'm riding. It is a lot more finicky than figuring out gear for walking. P.S. I assume that 4:16-4:20 is a segment of riding on the Yukon?
@DirtyTeethMTB

Thanks for watching :) Yeah, it's funny how you can forget so much over the course of a few seasons!! 4:16 was somewhere between Nikolai and McGrath on the Iditarod...

Awesome video! Do you find yourself still using the 40 below Zone Vapor Barrier, or is that exclusively used with the hydration backpack? Do you ever see yourself coming back up to AK to ride to Nome? Your videos in conjunction with Alex Hibbert's extreme cold expedition experience are a trove of knowledge.
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for your kind words :) I use the ZVB from time to time, but I've really been working on moisture management without it, and find I don't need it too much these days... I'd love to head back out to AK and do the full monty to Nome. I have friends doing it this year, and I'm definitely getting FOMO. But it's a big commitment... time, $$, etc and it's hard for me to spend that much time away from the fam... so I mostly stick to stuff 1 week and under these days... but never say never!! Ride on. :)

Always enjoy your content! Question: I live in Louisiana and I’m preparing for the Buffalo Headwaters Challenge this February in Pettigrew Arkansas. It could be from 20* F - 45*F and has quite a few water crossings that you wade. I was planning to have thick wool socks, covered by waterproof socks, then just get my shoes soaked & enjoy. *how should I layer my legs to keep them dry/warm while also being able to ride etc? Also, what is the best budget insulated water bottle that has good capacity and fits in normal bottle cage?
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 6 месяцев назад
depends on how deep/how long the crossings are... but short answer is wiggy's waders or trash compactor bags/ski straps if you wanna keep everything dry... but longer discussion is warranted... shoot me an email if you want: dirtyteethmtb at gmail dot com... re: water bottles... camelbak, polar, specialized... all make good insulated bottles... I haven't used an insulated water bottle in a while though... If I am using a bottle in below freezing conditions, I just turn it upside down in a feed bag, and put a chemical hand warmer in there with it... sorry I can't be of more help!!

I've been looking through your videos for more info about the face protection that you use in extreme cold. What's the nose/face strip that I've seen you wearing?
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 6 месяцев назад
Funny you mention that- I have a cold face/head video planned :) seems like it’s the only one left to do! Anyhoo… I use a buff cut in half a lot and just slide it across my nose and cheeks (you’ll see it a bunch in my Iditarod video…) simple, fast, effective, and I just keep it around my neck so up and down easy… I also like the 45nrth baklava if I need extra head/neck protection as well… it has a built in strip that can go across your nose… that’s what I’m wearing on the video thumbnail… friends also love nose hats and I’ll be testing one soon

Great video as always. Gonna be very useful for my winter cycling. 4:55 doesn’t electrolyte reduce the freezing temp of water, instead of raising it ? PS: I just got my first pair of merino wool socks, 45% blend, game changer !
@DirtyTeethMTB
@DirtyTeethMTB 6 месяцев назад
Oopsie- it makes it harder for water to freeze 🥶 because of sodium content… think of using salt melt for icy driveways…
