Episode 18 of my SOBO thru hike of the Pacific Crest Trail takes me across 163 miles of the stunning desert over 8 days.
After saying goodbye to my husband Brian in the last episode, I head out from Big Bear Lake to hike farther south on the PCT. The challenge of the adjustment surprises me! I start to get used to being alone again after a few days.

Choose your own adventure, how fun an challenging!! Probably similar to the original PCT. The full moon out and the sun rising, what a gift!! Was that the sun or the moon over the city at dark? Amazing!!!!

As you were hiking down in the washed-out riverbed, surrounded by canyon walls, I was thinking it was just a good thing you were not there during a torrential rainstorm. The threat of flash floods in the desert is very real, and I know of situations in which people were swept away by fast-moving water they could not escape from. Had you been several miles behind where you stopped, I would have been worried, but you cleared the washed-out area prior to the storm hitting. Timing is everything.

I followed you last year on Tiktok but I love those longer videos here now and especially that you're open about the struggles! I find it really reassuring to see that everyone struggles on those long hikes at certain points. Hope you are enjoying the WCT on your V2T hike! I’m wondering how you stay warm when it’s so cold your water bottles freeze?! Do you wear every layer you have? Or heat water?
