1. Maqaam al-Bayyaat (Bayati): This is a maqaam that evokes humility and monasticism. It is the maqaam that focuses the heart and makes it ponder the verses of Allah and their meanings. 2. Maqaam ar-Rast (Rast): Rast is Persian word meaning steadfastness. Specialists in maqaamaat prefer this maqaam when reciting verses that tell narratives or prescribe rulings. 3. Maqaam an-Nahaawand (Nahawand): This maqaam evokes emotions of compassion and gentleness, and instils humility and reflection. Nahawand is an Iranian city after which this maqaam was named. 4. Maqaam as-Seeka (Sikah): This maqaam is distinguished by its slow and easy pace. 5. Maqaam as-Saba (Saba): This maqaam is very spiritual and powerful, and evokes emotions of compassion. 6. Maqaam al-Hijaaz (Hijaz): This is a maqaam of Arabian origin, named after the Hijaz region of Arabia. It is one of the most spiritual maqaams and one of the most effective in helping one to focus in recitation of Qur’an.
Subhan Allah...Everything is so simply and Beautifully described in this video... Indeed Quran is the biggest Miracle..giving different feelings, emotions, knowledge, warnings and so much more.
What a rich and sophisticated tradition we have allahumma barik! This video made me even more proud to be Muslim alhamdulillah! Islamic sciences are so diverse
Subhānallāh, I have been reading Qur'ān for over a decade but I'm disturbed to say that I'm just knowing what is maqmat in the recitation of the Qur'ān..... Alhamdulillāh, I came to know it listening to your video clip. Pray Allāh swt grants you His abundant Rahmāt. Jazākumullāhu khayran to ALL the team members. I will go learn more....just seeing brother N. Ali Khan in a clip discussing Maqamat!
I pity you. I knew about maqamat for decades and I recite Quran using maqamat melodies base on verses context and according to my mood. Because I know the maqamat, so when imam recites Quran i can detect what melody he recites. In this video, he's not so expert and he recites Soba maqam but actually it's Hijaz maqam, also the end of maqam Rast of fatihah he recites is not Rast but Kurd it's sound sentimental. Here in Malaysia maqamat teaching are so widespread. Malaysia, Indonesia, Iran and Morocco, these countries always win in international Quranic Recitation because of the widespread teaching of maqamat in these countries. But of course the maqamat comes from Maqarri' of Egypt. Egyptian qari are the standard for quranic recitation. I feel pity for muslim in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India because they cannot recite Quran beautifully because the maqamat culture are not widespread instead they're recites Quran in Hindi melody
Very beautiful video. First i thought he is talking about qiraat but now I found out what maqams are. May Allah bless you, your intentions and your impact on our world!
I never knew there's so much i recitations alone. Beautiful information. Jazakallah khair. Inshaallah i wish to master i atleast i e of these maqams. May Allah make us amog the people who recite the Quran Beautifully ❤
It’s very difficult for those of us that are not from the Middle East to grasp maqamat, because they're built on melodic modes and microtonal structures we're not used to hearing. A basic analogy would be to imagine a set of piano keys. Now imagine that between any two of those keys there are 1 or more additional notes. Maqamat leverage these notes regularly, which is why they're traditionally performed on stringed instruments that can be finely tuned like the oud. Although it’s permissible for maqamat to be applied, they should be lower on our list of priorities when reciting Qur'an (after tajweed, makharij, sifaat, hifz). The unspoken reality is that you have to have been immersed in a culture, hearing Umm Kulthum, Fairuz, Wadih El Safi, Abdel Halim (or the Turkish/Iranian etc equivalents) being played around you since childhood. Either that or you would have to learn for many years from a qaari with ijaazah. Even then, maqamat require an extremely well-tuned ear, which the majority of people simply don't have. The greatest qurrah are those who can apply the maqamat in moderation without altering tajweed, which takes a lifetime to master. Maqamat can be a slippery slope, so it's best to use them in moderation and not to take them too seriously when beautifying your recitation. W'Allahu a'alam. Good on brother Faisal for making the effort. May Allah ﷻ reward him.
I love this guy's advice since some have trouble reciting in specific maqams or have trouble not reciting in specific maqams. It is nice to know about maqams, but it shouldn't be the main focus of the recitation. I believe that my voice tend to go to Kurd even though I prefer Hijaz and Nahawand.
Jazakallaah khayran, and very true brother, many people who don’t have the knowledge just agree without knowing. There’s an authentic Hadith that the prophet sallallaah alayhi wa Salam says, (mind you I’m going to be paraphrasing, also this is a prophecy subhanallaah). He sallallaah alayhi wa Salam says, and they will let him lead so he can sing to them. And we see that this is happening, may allah subhanahu wa ta’laa guide us ameen.
[1] Hadith on Qira’ah: Allah attentively listens to recitation of Quran Fadalah ibn ‘Ubayd reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah listens more intently to a man reciting the Quran aloud in a beautiful voice than an employer of singers listens to his singers.” Source: Sunan Ibn Mājah 1340 Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Ibn Taymiyyah [2] Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, this Quran has descended with sadness. If you recite it, then weep. If you cannot weep, then feign weeping. Recite in a melodious tone, for whoever does not use a pleasant voice is not one of us.” Source: Sunan Ibn Mājah 535 Grade: Jayyid (very good) according to Al-‘Iraqi [3] Abu Musa reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him, “O Abu Musa, you have been given a voice for recitation from the instruments of the house of David.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 4761, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 793 Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi (authenticity agreed upon) according to Al-Bukhari and Muslim These are some of the hadeeth.
The words of Allah (swt) are beautiful no matter which maqam is employed. SubhanAllah! I do not hear one i do not like. May Allah (swt) bless the believers to enjoy a fruitful Ramadan. Ameen.
Jazakallah khairan brother ❣️ After knowing these maqamats and the explanations I understand how and why my favourite qari Omar Hisham Al Arabi has so many styles of recitation💖😍💛✨
There are several videos of qira’at and maqamat in the playlist"quoranologie" of the channel arabic 101 (and perhaps 60 to 90 videos to learn tajweed, more important than maqamat)
I've noticed that people from different cultures recite Quran and call the Adhan in musical forms that emerged from their own cultures. I heard someone from Ethiopia leading salat, and to my ears, they were Ethiopian melodies. African Americans tend to use musical forms from blues and gospel. When I call the adhan, I find myself using melodies from Italian opera.
Riyad as-Salihin 1425 'Aishah (R.A) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite frequently in his bowing and prostration: "Subhanak- Allahumma, Rabbana wa bihamdika. Allahum-maghfir li (O Allah! You are free from imperfection and I begin with praising You. Forgive my sins)."
Minshawi Best - very solemn and captures sadness.. so serene..! SubhaanAllah.. Alhamdulillaah for Qur'an Alhamdulillaah we are Ummati of the Last Messenger (salallaahu'alaihi wasalam) we are Muslims alhamdulillah

You can feel happy while reciting the verses on Jahannam , because you know another option, Jannah , is there to seek...you can also feel happy out of gratitude that because of Jahannam, you strive in the way of Allah! Everything is judged by the intention.
Do you experience happiness when talking about torture, drinking boiling water, and blood curdling screams? Why would you ever feel happy reading of these things whilst knowing you are never truly safe from the Fire?
O Allah If I love You out of fear of Hell, burn me in Hell! If I love you out of desire for Paradise, Lock me out of Paradise. But if I love you for Yourself alone, Do not deny to me Your eternal beauty. - Rabia al Basri
My Imam recites in 8 different Maqams and I've practiced a lot to do all the 8 of them and Alhamdulillah I can do all 8 of them (not 100%) And "7" of those styles includes all the Maqams you've mentioned here except the Maqam "Azam" the 8th one is more like the recitation of Khalid al Jalil "Wa qala Firaunu dharuni" many people recite this verse like the Khalid al Jalil style. I want to know what is the name of that Maqam. JazakhAllah Khair
By far in my favourite top three of your videos thus far ❤ I'm not sure which maqam Sh Noreen prayed in but SubhanAllah his voice! May Allah swt have mercy on him} Ameen. Barak Allahu feek brs. Asalamualaikum
I loved it. It was very educational. I had no idea these types of recitation and melodies had names. Very unique. Now I can listen to verses of Quran with my choice of Qaraa'a. JazakAllah Khair for making this video.
Amazing that the repeatedly brother pointed out how it’s the words of Allah that take precedence over any maqamat. This was an important issue to mention. Alluma Barik
I'm same as Kareem was nit aware about these diff aquama shukrun to educate others ❤❤ always have the same tone from 10yrs old now 72yrs yes Islam we learn to the grave so true 👍 with Allah's blessings 🙌 ❤️ ♥️
Maybe the shaykh was reciting about Jahannam in a happy tone because he was thinking about the disbelievers who antagonized Muslims being thrown into Jahannam.
Thing is some people say Maqam Ajam can also be used in authoritative verses, like on the Day of Judgment. Therefore, some people do recite verses of jahannam in Ajam as they do it from an authoritative standpoint. Also, Maqam Nahawand is often touted as a happy Maqam, but some people will also use this Maqam for verses of Jahannam because of its low tones. It all really varies and who you're learning from. There's no hard and fast rules to it, more like general guidelines.
That was such educational and informative, prior to that I always consider various Quranic recitation as different style, never know it has such a deep meanings and significant. Thank you Brother for sharing 🌺
Salam guys, I'm sure many of you have heard Yasir Al Dosari, imo, he's the best in maqamats, he's mastered every other, like for real!! I have completed my tajweed, now i aim to beautify my talawah (learn maqamat) and understanding quran, implementing as this bro said.. also it's hard to just imitate, you really need someone to teach you the tones and you gotta practice them, which i really need rn
All these maqamat are beautiful MashaAllah. But the qari in our Masjid simply hit the Octaves and fifths with simple melody, and I have never heard more beautiful recitation than his. Famous recitations doesn't attract me now. I guess I have become fan of his octaves.
Brother said maqam ajam don't goes with verses about jahannam but Sheikh Saleh Al musally and other sheikhs do this with perfection e.g surah ad dukhan ayah 40-59 by sheikh musally
