They will only eat what they like. Make sure theres a drink nearby. I had a baby one running around all winter...i was feedkng it but it was found dead about 2 weeks before the others came out of hibernation. I was gutted.
UK hedgehogs are never suitable as pets! You can rescue them and over-winter them if they’re underweight, but must NEVER be caged. Unless a limb is missing, etc., they can be released into a large walled garden with hibernurculums made especially for them so they can sleep in safety during the day and somewhere they can wander about at night if they want to (Uk hedgehogs can wander many miles a night, foraging for earthworms, grubs, etc.) I believe people in the US have hedgehogs as pets, they are African or South American hedgehogs which should still be in the wild. NB: any hedgehogs seen during the daytime are ill or in distress!!!! If seen, please wear thick gloves to pick up the hog, place into a dark box if possible, and get to a vet IMMEDIATELY! (In Uk, vets treat wildlife for FREE, they have a duty of care to all wildlife, so please don’t worry about the bill - you shouldn’t get one. If you do, say you’ll complain to the British Vet Association as they can be struck off if they try to charge you! I’ve never been asked to pay for any wild animals I’ve taken into the vets, it is FREE for wildlife you take in.
I have been told not to feed peanuts as these can get stuck in their throat. Also live Meal worms as these can cause a particular bone disease (name escapes me) I have hedgehogs visiting my garden UK and always feed specially prepared hedgehog wet & dry foods. Really nice video too!
**When right after a tragedy you go back to watching mindless useless mind-rotting bullshit to forget the real word you live in and it's uglyness** >plays "8 FACTS About Hedgehogs You Should Know"
I have a Mum and little one (now a big one as it's October), that come every evening to eat chicken flavoured cat biscuits. It's lovely to hear them crunch, crunch, crunch away. Now the leaves are falling I'm going to try make a nest for them, or one, as they are usually solitary. I noticed they came round together a few months ago, but now come individually, so I guess they are starting to go their own way.
I rescue hedgehogs. They are funny creatures, currently have 3 with me. Ones blind, ones a baby that lost his back leg and a huge male. These beautiful balls of spikes are endangered, please call nearest rescue if you find a hurt one OR its out during the day. Blessings to all.
Please NEVER feed hedgehogs peanuts, like shown in this video. They cause metabolic bone disease and they can also get lodged in the roof of their mouths which is not pleasant either.. Mealworms and sunflower hearts are also NEVER to be given as they also cause Metabolic Bone Disease. Only feed hedgehog biscuits or kitten/cat biscuits, they prefer chicken flavour. Wet cat food in jelly can also be given, but never leave out in the day as flies will lay eggs on the food. Always provide plenty of fresh water, no other drink or any kind. Thanks for caring :)
Oh no no no I feel awful about two weeks ago I noticed a hedgehog 🦔🦔 and her baby eating wot meal worm's that had fell out my bird feeder IV been feeding them meal worm's every night since then I hope I haven't hurt them 💔💔😕😕
Some of them, yes. But contrary to popular belief, hedgehogs don't normally eat chili dogs. However, you CAN give them meat (unseasoned) and pretend your hedgehog is eating a chili dog. Another fact, a real hedgehog isn't as fast as Sonic but is pretty fast for our real world. Common hedgehogs can run in short bursts of speeds of about 4 mph.
They anoint to keep a new smell they like with them to remember it and associate it with good things from what I've observed. Like if you feed them a new food they like or you give them a cloth that happened to smell like something good, they'll probably lick it and anoint their spines with it.
My German shepherd attacked one in the night, luckily caught in time as it didn't suffer any punctures, no bleeding. I was unaware this happened, so by morning I was told about it, checked the hedgehog and it was on its back in the grass, all night. I figured it was stuck, the quills were so entangled with the grass which it was. We moved it into next doors garden with cat dry food.
Hedgehogs are very cute creatures but are messy animals. They poop and pee most of the time when they are awake, when they are scared and even when they take a bath. Be careful of their poop and urine. These scatter to their spikes when they form a ball and when you accidentally touched their quils and did not washed your hands and accidentally touched T-zone of your face, the bacteria from poop and urine can cause cough and cold, diarrhea and fever. Just be careful and do not forget to wash your hands in taking care of these cute creatures.
Let hedgehogs run free. "When they take a bath??" Are you for real? Get yourself a doll, why not? What a shit thread this is. I can`t read anymore. You are all crazy.
African Pygmy Hedgehogs are legal in the state of Arizona, they became legal to own in 2015. They are still illegal in CA, PA, some boroughs in NY, and a few other states/cities.
Kinda doesn't make sense for them to be legal in dry and hot places and illegal in cold and wet places. They are an African species so they can't become invasive where it's cold, and vice versa.
Our local one likes kippers. Yes... i know fish are bad, but please explain that to Sonic. I put fish out for the cat (a friends puss) and Lo behold... Sonic appears and tucks in.
i found a hedgehog in my backyard but it was stuck on my bench, too scared to jump off, not sure how it got there since it's sealed off by 2metre fences with no gaps to get in or out. It looked so cute i wanted to keep it but i had to do the right thing and let it be free. Hope it leads a happy life ;')
Being in the UK, I find it strange that some are kept as pets , especially as it seems in America... we have hogs that frequent our garden but I look at them exclusively as wild animals . I help as much as possible....hedgehog house , feeding station , and nightly food and water as well as putting a trail cam out every night too but otherwise I keep clear and allow them to get on with life . 🙂
I love sitting with the window open at nite to watch my 4 hedgehogs in my garden . We put cat biscuits out 4 them . We got 3 male and a female . I like watching one go in and get the food and the other one comes and they talk 2 each other
Hope you leave out sufficient water to wash down that dried stuff. In England, dehydration is one of the biggest killers of wild hedgehogs. It is illegal to keep wild hh captive. Thank God.
I beg to differ about the information that they are loners. I have a friend who lives in Caesaria, Israel in a home and she has several cats who of course have the full run of the garden. Since they are often in the back garden, she has put out cat kibble in bowls for them as well as bowls of water. The neighboring hedgehogs have discovered this source of food and fresh water and have come to help themselves but they do not come alone, they come in family groups, from a huge (for a hedgehog!) grandfather to the smallest grandchild, to eat the cat kibble and drink the water...they never come alone but always in pairs and with kids in tow!
I've hedgehogs in my gardens all the time. There's a very bright one who just seems to love me. He fell asleep on me last night a d had me wondering if he wanted a home but IDK of its legal too nor will he be tame enough once in. He comes to see me most nights. The spot light comes on in the garden the same time too. Should I build him a home in the garden or can I bring him in and give him one?.
No wonder l have never seen one, and you said so in the frist sentence. You have hedgehogs and the Americas have hummingbirds. Thanks for sharing!!!!🎃♣🎃♣🎃♣🎃♣🎃♣🎃♣🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃
Do you have any idea why a hedgehog bites on their foot (just one actually) and while doing that, he curls up and starts to hiss massively?? (note: my little guy doesn't have anything stuck between the toes, nor does he have something in general, he is completely healthy) he was perfectly fine and from one second to another he started doing that. We now unfortunately have bank holidays and no vet is open (and those 24h vets have no clue about hedgies) 😢
Care should be taken when handling hedgehogs with bare hands, as silly as it sounds (which it isn't), hedgehogs coat their spines with their saliva when they eat certain foods, impregnating their quills with powerful chemicals and bacteria that could send you into the hospital several times. sometimes with complications in the worst case. where I live, many are seen in the wild and love to eat paint. whenever I paint the front of my house, I have them here trying to steal my paint
Idk why they are illegal in PA. ( DON'T YOU DARE PITY ME I HATE IT. I was just born this way ok?) I have encountered African Pigme Hedgehogs in Canada. My mom doesn't understand why they are illegal here they are perfect 1st time pets for people with Autism which I agree with being a person who suffers from high functioning Autism I have situational depression, migraines and epilepsy. I hate pity from others. Anyway when you pet them it's quite soothing almost like feeling a piece of fabric for sensory purposes but better because when you're upset you sometimes want to cry but having a living thing to take care of who you can talk to about you're secrets because they'll keep any of them. As long as I'm not suffering from photophobia to the extent where if I look at lights I want to poke my eyes out or die if I hide under a blanket the pain goes away. Please don't pity me I will become UPSET and might start to HATE you because I asked you nicely not to pity me.
I love how cute they are. The only problem with these guys is they can be costly to take to a special vet. They're kind of a high maintenance pet. Unlike a cat or dog that's easy to take care of. These guys require a heat source too because they need it.
@@daisyhobbs7500We are talking about pet hedgies here. If not in captivity, they are not a pet. They are wild then. So you want them wild. Then this video is useless then. That defeats the purpose. There is no point about considering or planning to keep a pet hedgie if you want them free roaming or wild.
@@user-ec6xd2ig4c This video is guilty of spreading misinformation by mixing up the species of hedgehogs. UK hogs outdoors are wild and must never be kept as pets. It is illegal. They are European hedgehogs and like to be out in the cold and rain. The ones kept as pets are much smaller and usually called APHs or African Pygmy Hedgehogs. They need to be kept in special vivariums, with their own wheels and special (different) foods. They have to be kept warm at all times or they will hibernate and die. They make terrible pets. I know this because I rescue both kinds.
I'm really used to the dozens on gofers on my lawn, but I'm only now seeing hedgehogs, and they picked a nice bush right by my barn door. May start feeding the animals, this is a tiny 300 foot artificial vally, and it would be cheaper to just help them out than to build the many fences. I already build some roads for the goffers and they use them, and i give them bolders for there doorways. I dont feed them, but i am trying to farm here, and dont wanna kill them.
I had a silver one and a light blonde one they had babies as I went thru a divorce so I never was told by my ex how many or anything . But they were fun to have . thank you for this showing
