Being an artist is not for the weak. You will hate the industry, the way your self-esteem is tied to your work, and the hours upon hours of work that you will put into it with little control over the art you create being a success. Passion and the obsessive need to create is what keeps the artist going. Speaking as an author here who has worked for more than a decade in the industry and has had to shift between the creative side of writing my own books and helping others with the production of their books as my finances have fluctuated. When you have to make the money, you don't always get to do the creative part, but you can find ways to merge passion and finances.

It's actually one of my pet peeves, when ppl say, "I want to be an artist." Like, what are you even talking about? You're either an artist or you're not: there is no "want". Paying your bills is a separate matter & doesn't define who you are, ever, artists.
Totally agree. I did 3unit art at school but at the time I was a pretty boring person. It wasn't until I had alot of trauma in my life to when I became an artist. It was therapy - that's what makes an artist. Anyone wanting to be an artist with a silver spoon in their mouth could be an artist but would they make a living out of it? Probably not. Artist IS an identity though, an interesting one anyway. Now that I'm healed from trauma I can still be an artist but it is no longer my identity. It depends on how old you are and what part of the mountain you are on.
You reached your audience on a deeper level with this video. All of it struck a chord within me. Being an artist who started a biz in 2016, took a VoTech adult woodworking class in 2017 in hopes to make more money in this field, just to get a job as professional furniture maker to not pay me enough for four years, and now leaving my home state to move to Denver, find a brand new job, and hard launch my biz after five years. I turned 28 last month. The day before my bday I had a dream that I got severely electrocuted in a bathroom and was frozen trying to unlock the door because I didn’t want to die alone and go out that way. omg. i am so sorry to hear about your cousin 💔i rly cant even imagine during covid where we are all so isolated and cant even be together let along all the other scary news happening. ive been thinking a lot about my mom and how lucky i was to see her pass as strange as that is to say. my best friend of 16 yrs also got in a horrific car accident on halloween and by some miracle she got to live. life is rly so fleeting and unity is the most important thing at the end of the day. we get so caught up in our individual lives we rly fail to see the bigger picture until a huge crisis like COVID. but its so great you got to at least live the happiest of times with him those memories last forever and no virus can take that from you 🙏

Btw the concept of “so good they can’t ignore you” felt very leo to me, so I looked it Cal Newport’s birthday and he has a Leo moon!! I feel like a lot of the reasons why I resonate with what he says (and you) so much is because I appreciate the responsibility that fixed fire has to be themselves and to not let life get in the way of that. As a Leo sun myself it is hard to exactly describe it. I just feel like I have a duty to do the things that bring my joy and light me up, even when it isn’t easy. I think Cal Newport’s writing is just very principled, authentic and shows a lot of integrity. It’s a positive manifestation of having a big “ego”, as people say about Leos. It’s about knowing yourself so that you can embody yourself correctly.

Pet groomer for 30 years here. That's hilarious that you were a dog bather. We could share stories! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who looked back at my childhood at 20 years old and remembered I wanted to be a vet and why. My parents put my cat to sleep when I was 8 because they didn't want to spend the money to fix him. It was devastating to me and right then and there I said to myself that when I grow up, I'm gonna be the best vet and NOBODY would have to put their animal down because of money. 8 year old thinking, right? I'm Leo moon btw. Doesn't matter. It stuck with me and I took an attitude of serving and not taking right there on the spot. I didn't want anyone to feel that pain no matter if it was my enemy. Fast fwd to years later and I couldn't cut the schooling so I somehow found my way in cosmetology in high school and I was the top of the class. Didn't like some of the aspects but I was good at it and it was killer money right out of school. Long story short, through twists of fate, I took a job as a dog bather at a vet because I was burned out on people. Next thing you know I'm cutting dog hair instead of people and now I work for a vet! This has been my life and it will be my legacy because I'm now training the next generation how to do it right. I will die happy knowing I served animals and people at the same time. That for me is a life well lived. Cam is right guys. Go back and find your passion from when you were young.
Yup! What really struck me is when you said "love the work that you do." Like it's a partner. People need remember that having a job pretty much a privilege these days. It makes me mad when I see someone working and their attitude sucks and they don't even do the work well. Do your best at whatever you do. :) Also, I love Lorde. I like her music.

I am an organic farmer. We raise veggies, pigs, (&sometimes birds and bees) for our CSA program. I’m far from money rich. But i lift& sweat, without paying for a gym membership! I eat wholesome nutrition meanwhile stewarding the Land for the future. I get an amazing tan which serves my vanity. And i connect with a lot of wild wonderful folks. I love my job, but do dream to sing and be a money rich Magickal Mystic. But literally working the dirt feeds my face right now. And i sing while i’m working (the veggies like it anyway lol). Thanks for mentioning this podcast in your weekly astro report. So many salient points. I know a lot of welders, too. And one of my best buds used to own 2yoga studios& teach full time, now she’s a psychologist who does corporate coaching and makes absolute bank. Once a yogi, always a yogi. I've watched this twice now... I've been desperate to find a way to feel satisfied with myself as a person & this hit the nail on the head... I'm a Mom.... I think of when I've been the happiest in my 35 years and it's solely within the 1st year of both my biological kid's lives but something began to change as they got older. Once my kid's got to the age of no longer needing me to do thing's to keep them alive (basically lol) I have been trying to find myself aside from being "just a mom/wife" I grew up dreaming of traveling the world in any way I could do it & afford to live....
