This was one of my most favourite videos from my old channel, so I'm glad it was one of the 2 videos that were backed up! I filmed this about 2 years ago, but this video is still accurate of my own lived experiences. I hope you enjoy it! Great video Lizzie. My disability was caused by spinal surgery and now have to use crutches. I'm now driving again but before I learned how to drive an adapted car I used to use a little mobility scooter, so I could be independent and do a little shopping. I always used to get frustrated because of the following example, which happened almost every time. I'm in a supermarket waiting my turn to get to the milk, once the person in front of me starts to move on I would start to move forward when some other person would appear from behind me and stop me in my tracks so they could get their milk. Then they'd look at me as if to say "oh! were you waiting for the milk" No dear I'm just having a nap in the middle of the store, and that would create a situation where everyone behind them would do the same and not even look at or notice me. It's not much better now as I use 1 crutch on my left, with the other in my trolley and I use the trolley as my right crutch, people are just oblivious to things around them.

He’ five, maybe six, he comes up to me and starts the conversation: Him: Why are you in a wheelchair? Me: I got tired of falling down. Him: Did you skin your knees a lot? Skinned knees hurt. Me: They do. Him: I have a scab. Wanna see? Me: Sure. Easiest conversation about my wheelchair ever.

That's such a sweet and pure conversation! This is why I love going to schools and talking to kids about disability, they're so honest and curious. The conversations I've had with them are simply the best! How do we lose our capability to do that the older we grow?!

I live next door to an elementary school and that is where I go and vote on election day. The best one for was going down the hall to the election center and a little boy came beside me and said, "Hey mister! Why are you in a wheelchair?" I had to think like an eight year old boy and make it simple so he'd understand. I said, " I bumped my head in an automobile accident and broke my neck." He replied, "Uh-ah!" (meaning no-way!) I was left speechless!
