Fun fact: The producers of Dark are working on their next Netflix series right now called "1899". It's gonna be ghost ship-esque horror/thriller on the Atlantic ocean, there's only a teaser out so far, though..
We have yet to see what the ship will actually look like, I hope it's not gonna be what we saw in the teaser, since that'd be very historically inaccurate. That one looked like an Edwardian era liner, which would be an entire decade too early
The mini-series “Unorthodox” is well worth seeing. It is about a young woman from New York who starts a new life in Berlin. The languages are Yiddish, English and German.
I think your description leaves out a few things. The heroine is from an ultra Orthodox Jewish family in an arranged marriage in which is stifling. She runs away/escapes to Germany where her mother is living after she left the Ultra Orthodox community in NYC. Her husband comes looking for her. It was base on a book/true story from some years before.
Surprised you didn't include Babylon Berlin. That's an amazing show set in the late Weimar period, huge budget and major production. It's a neo noir crime thriller set in the late 1920's and follows closely many historical events. Anyway, Babylon Berlin and Dark are my two favorite German shows, and Dark definitely in the top 3 of my favorite series of all time.
Yes, DARK! The best German series ever in my opinion. I really don't know why it isn't much more popular in Germany. Maybe because it's on Netflix and not on classic tv? Or maybe it's a case of the prophet not being honoured in his own country...
Probably the latter. It still was quite popular, though, so it's not completely unheard of. Some things just don't kick off in their country, just like "Die drei ???" (The Three Investigators) completely flopped in the US but is still extremely popular in Germany, to a point where it got picked up and continued by German authors.
I almost cried when you chose German potato salad. My German grandmother made the BEST! Been more than 50 years since I had any. I have watched Barbaren! I took 4 years of Latin in high school!
"Dark" is a definite recommend. Its dubbed English audio isn't that great, so consider watching it in the original German with the well-made English (non-CC) subtitles for better immersion.
Dark is very good but not for those that cannot keep up. I had a huge poster with all the people. …..looked like I was trying to solve a crime!!!! Original idea and well edited. Take a shot every time they say Noah!!!!
So surprised you left out Babylon Berlin! I am a huge fan of that show. Very good for people who enjoy noir-style shows. Not sure if the actors or famous/well-known in Germany, but I enjoyed it. Hoping they’ll come out with a fourth season soon!
I watched Dark, and absolutely loved it. The actors were phenomenal, and loved the casting, the younger version of the characters looked so much like them. I just finished the Korean drama "Hotel Del Luna" and i highly recommend it if you like supernatural mysteries.
I think this is one of your best videos yet for many reasons - we get to hear you speak German and with subtitles it becomes educational for us. Also you are helping those of us who live in Germany integrate further by learning about more German content we can consume. I really think you should make more videos like this, teaching and speaking German in Germany and talking about German culture, events, arts and society. Thanks
I'm sure it's been mentioned in the comments because the show is just too good to be overlooked but "KLEO" (starring Jella Haase and Dimitrij Schaad) is a fantastic series. Probably due to my age, I am fascinated with life in the former East German state and in particular, under the watchful eyes of the Stasi. This show has everything: Action, adventure, romance (of sorts) and a compelling story line. I can't wait for the release of Season 2.

My favorite german serie is "Der Tatortreiniger" (The Crime Scene Cleaner). It's sadly not on netflix I think. It is really german humor. So I'm not sure if people from other countries would get it.

I agree with most of the recommendations in the comments, but I just wanted to add Queer Eye Germany - it's so wholesome and each episode is in a different city in Germany plus you get to hear how people actually talk. Similarly Nailed It Germany is also really fun if you like baking and also cake fails. Outside of Netflix, I also enjoyed the Cold War spy series The Same Sky
I watched a one season crime series called Dogs of Berlin which I liked, although I questioned the portrayal of the Turkish people as being sometimes Turks and sometimes Arabs.
Loved Dark; loved the theme song, too. The nearest thing I’ve seen since is the movie Predestination, starring Ethan Hawke (which came out 3 years before Dark … hmmm … 🤔🤷🏻♂️). Think I’ll give Billion Dollar Code a look … Danke schoen. 🙂
Babylon Berlin and How to Sell Drugs Online Fast are two favorites. Although a movie, Run Lola Run fits with some of these titles and Americans should recognize Franka Potente and some of the other actors.
With regards to your German Potato Salad...an entire video of how to do that would be excellent! My mother still makes my grandmothers and it's the only place that I can actually get REAL German Potato Salad...can't find it anywhere else where I live...Milwaukee...go figure! I'm sure others would enjoy being able to make their own traditional salad!

I absolutely loved Dark and I think there is nothing comparable out there. Still, for those who like this kind of series I can recommend "Dirk Gently" (also the "everything is connected"-style 😅 but a bit more weird and funny) and right now I am watching "Travellers", also really cool. 💯 Thanks Feli as always for your entertaining videos!!! 🥰

I am watching Bio Hackers. I am noticing that you like shows where the lead character has some knowledge of the the impending doom yet has bureaucracy blockades to save the World. This is better than Dark.
Only show I’ve watched which was on Netflix a few years back was called “Generation War” set in WWII around 3 friends and how the war totally changes their lives all set in Germany

I just did my intro lesson on Kleo. I didn't realize how much I'd like seeing people while I learn. Hopefully that will help overcome the anxiety of speaking to another person in real life.
The funniest show I’m watching now on Netflix isn’t German; its Korean and its titled Business Proposal. Its about the President of a food company who seeks to marry the girl on the wrong side of the tracks to get his pushy grandfather to stop harassing him about his not being married yet! Its a true romantic comedy with the emphasis on the comedy part.
I am Romanian and I spent my childhood in Romania, until the age of 12. I am not used to doubbing either. I never lived in an English environment, but I am used to movies and series in their original language and with subtitles. That's why I learned Spanish from tv
I was disappointed that Netflix bailed on season 2 of Tribes of Europa. Babylon Berlin is a production masterpiece, that brilliantly recreates the turbulent period of Weimar Germany.
Well there is that German NETFLIX show (though it's set in Austria) called "KITZ" which was well produced. KITZ is pretty much a corss between Revenge and Gossip girl set in the Austrian alps. That's the best description I can come up with.
Feli, Two shows I enjoyed were Babylon Berlin and Generation War. Babalon Berlin covered a lot of history of Germany in the 1920's along with some crime mysteries. I had two years of German in high school 50 years ago, and I can understand maybe 40% if the actors don't speak too fast. Back in the 1980's, I lived in Chicago. A friend took me to a theater that played German movies. We saw Das Boot. By the end of the movie, I was understanding 60% of the dialog. Time and hearing loss have curtailed that ability these days.
Not too long ago, I watched on Netflx a three-episode German miniseries called Over Christmas (Über Weihnachten) and a German movie called Rumspringa. Both are comedy-dramas with dialogue that shouldn't be too complicated for folks learning German.
Deutschland 83/86/89 are good series to watch. Loads of suspense with good historical references. The only issue here is whether all are on Netflix. I first watched 83 on Hulu, then 86/89 on Netflix. That may pose a slight challenge.

for Americans it is certainly interesting to know that our German Avenger and Marvel superhero Ayo from the Dora Milaje (Florence Kasumba) plays a role in "Criminal Deutschland". She gives also her English voice to Shenzi, one of the hyena in Walt Disney's Lion King.
I am watching The Defeated right now and I am finding it really interesting. We learned all about WWII and the aftermath at school but never learned anything much about the Germans except that they we're the bad guys. This shows a new perspective on the issue showing that things weren't quite so black and white.
Dark is one of my all-time favorite shows! My teenage sons and I like it so much, while we were in Berlin in April we went to three of the filming locations for Dark - the church - Südwestkirchhof Stahnsdorf, the bridge - Königsweg Brücke and the high school - Reinfelder Schule. It was so fun to visit these places. I have watched several of the shows you mentioned and do have to recommend Babylon Berlin. It's a great show too. Some other German shows that I really enjoyed (some are on Prime, others on Netflix) include Generation War ( Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter), Dogs of Berlin, Line of Separation (Tannbach) and the Charité series. One thing I've noticed, a lot of the same German actors are in a lot of these shows. Nothing wrong with that, they're all great actors!!!
Thank you for the list. I’ve needed new shows to watch and now that people are traveling more, especially internationally, more German speaking tourists are coming to where I work. These shows will help me scrape the rust off my German speaking capability. However, I don’t believe I will completely get rid of my Badisch accent or mix in the occasional Yiddish pronunciation, which sometimes overlaps with Badisch. Also, the Netflix mini-series “Unorthodox”, while only in English and Yiddish, is a joint American-German project. The Yiddish dialect they speak is difficult for me to understand but it might be of interest to German speakers nonetheless. Word of warning, there is only one past tense in Yiddish (present perfect) and the word order can be different at times. I love your channel and how informative it is.
I'm German and I'm brushing up my French at the moment by watching the series "Plan Coeur". I've watched it in French with French subtitles and it has been really good and very funny. Plus I did learn a lot of new French words and slang. Highly recommend!! 🤩👍
This is really weird, I was thinking that a story in German about Armenius and his defeat of Caesar's legions would make a fantastic movie. And then the show Barbarian popped up. I don't have Netflix but I would love to see this show.

It makes you think about human societal relationships and the power of groups when a high school class project spins wildly out of control.
For anyone who wants to do this there’s a chrome add on called language translator and it lets you view the script and subtitles in both languages and it’s really helpful with learning language and it works with Netflix and many others.

I enjoyed the show Kleo, it's about an East German assassin who gets screwed over and goes on a revenge mission after being released from prison when the Berlin Wall came down.
I've watched Dark, Biohackers, Dogs of Berlin, Criminal however Babylon Berlin is by far my favorite German show. Looking forward to season 4 this summer.
Not necessarily on Netflix but certainly on TV in USA and UK, the trilogy Deutschland 83, Deutschland 86, and Deutschland 89 about the final years of East Germany and its spy network in the West. As others have mentioned, Babylon Berlin has been terrific and, following on from the award winning film Das Boot, there is a TV series covering not only events at sea but those back at the home port involving the French Resistance. The 3rd series has just been released.

Babylon Berlin. I've seen many of those. Good shows, especially Dark and How to Buy Drugs Online, but Babylon Berlin is also fantastisch. It's a period piece set in Berlin in during the Weimar Republic. Very engaging.
