Surf schools have alot to answer for on the drop in rule, post covid days seems like etiquette has gone out the window and self entitlement is out of control.

Not everyone has someone to surf with, accidents happen would you rather be in a car accident by yourself or with another person; would you rather be stuck in a bad situation in the water with a buddy or by yourself, either way doesn't make the situation less dangerous; know your limits

I've been in both situations and thankfully lived to tell the tales, things can turn bad very quickly and the ocean is an extremely powerful force it's all education! 🤙

Well said especially point 6, respect the ocean and leave it clean 👍

Thanks for the advice I was subscribed to your channel since my enthusiasm of bodyboarding started. I’m 22 and my board just arrived I’m super stoked to start surfing the beaches of Puerto Rico

One big thing for me, its to always make an effort to ride lefts and rights. Its easy to get carried over and start focusing on one side, and then you lose a lot of potential fun throughout the years.

Ah yes, warming up... something I haven't really thought of! Number one is useless to me as I don't have any friends who surf. Everytime I see a "big" wave, I bail.... still learning to duck dive. Anyways, nice vid, Iain!!!!

Good advice mate. I have surfed alone for 20 years. Pushed my luck plenty even surfing hrs after dark on full moons. Thats different…. But stupid 🤔🤙😎

Great clip, bru. I might add 'don't expect to catch a set in the first 10-15 minutes of a session' if there are some others already surfing that peak, maybe with the exception of it being your local break. Make it clear you're waiting your turn and if its a new spot with an established lineup, they'll appreciate the courtesy.

I just had a solo surf the other day. I was terrified of what lurks below and I definitely would rather surf with friends or people in general, but it was so enjoyable to pick and choose whatever wave I wanted.

Also, my session ended after a cramp 😬 so this is great advice 😅

Great video Iain, but rule #1...... I love paddling out alone. And if everybody follows rule #1....that means more crowds and more rule #2 problems.

For beginners this is good advice though. More likely they will progress faster as well with a partner. I often surf alone, but I understand my breaks and most likely I'll know someone in the water. There is a spot that I vow to never go in alone as it's so sharky, and I try not to break that rule.

@weareyouthere agreed for beginners, and even for experienced riders in super heavy waves or more dangerous spots. At my local beachy though, no better feeling than pulling up at sunrise, just to see nobody in the water and have the pick of any wave.

Thank you and thank you. Nicely said PS: I sub to @Haliboldt comment😅🤙 Sometimes being alone in the water is restoring😌 other times can be terrifying🌊 🔨🔨😁
