Here we have a great selection of budget Everyday Carry folding knives, that also happen to be non-locking and with a blade length of under 3" making them UK legal and therefore legal in many other countries too.
This channel is here to give you ideas and inspiration when it comes to finding great Everyday Carry, Travel Gear and Gadgets, on the back of solid and detailed reviews alongside years of experience, which I hope will make life and travel just a little bit more frictionless and fun.
My name is Jonathan, I have a passion for all things gadget, travel and EDC (Everyday Carry), which has filled both my personal and work life for many years.
This includes sourcing, reviewing and product development and the creation of two UK national retail chains. Find out more here: • About Jon Gadget - Who...
I welcome any feedback on my videos or the channel in general in the comments. See below for more on this.

Product Sourcing:
When it comes to sourcing a product for review, I will usually either purchase and item personally or reach out to a supplier requesting a sample for review. Many suppliers are supportive if they are confident in their product, appreciating the value of greater exposure.
I am sometimes asked to review a product by a supplier which I will only agree to if the product fits planned content for the channel and I believe will be of interest to you, my audience. The product needs to be worthy of a review and I always make it clear to the supplier that they cannot influence or be involved in the content in any way if they choose to supply a product. It is not in my interest to review inferior or poor quality products and therefore as you might expect many requests are politely declined.
Any sponsored videos (paid for reviews) are clearly stated as such so there can be no misunderstanding. Even with sponsored reviews I will only agree to a sponsorship on products and services which I believe will be of genuine interest to viewers.
Sometimes a supplier will provide a link to the product or the supplier which I am happy to include in the description. Sometimes I will be provided with an affiliate link so I can earn a commission on sales and this helps to support channel costs but never at the expense of an honest review. There is no cost to you and in some cases discounts can be obtained via the link or via an included code.
If a product I have reviewed is available from Amazon I will often include an Amazon link in the description. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. If you purchase a product or service with the links that I provide I may receive a small commission. There is no additional charge to you.

Replying to Comments:
I really appreciate the feedback in the comments - I find it a source of knowledge and inspiration - so thank you to all of you who take the time to contribute. This is not just for me as the creator, it is a valuable source of information for all readers of the comments. I have recently found that if I continue to respond to all the comments as the number of videos builds, it takes time away from being able to produce new content which would be very counter productive! So my aim is to read everything I can and reply when I can, after each video goes live for the first few hours at least, and beyond that when possible. I'll see how that works out 😊
Please consider subscribing and being notified to keep up to date with new video releases.
Thank you for supporting the channel.

Can we not all get together and try to overturn the precedent against locking blade knives? It's a decision that makes absolutely no sense at all, and means people are at risk of seriously hurting themselves because it's harder to have a safe knife for the job. And it's not even a law, it's just a precedent set in court. And what's more, it does absolutely nothing to curb knife crime, since no one is going around stabbing people with a 3in or less locking blade pocket knife!

Opinel uses Swedish steel Sandvik 12C27, which is the same as in stainless Morakniv models. It holds an edge quite well, especially if sharpened at 25° per side. But I keep mine at stock 20° and it still holds. Also, AFAIK, you can get a №6 Opinel, remove the locking ring and it will still be legal in UK.

As someone who's been getting into whittling, it's nice to see a sheepsfoot blade get a mention. I'd love to see a rundown of straight blades. At the moment I use a non-foldable Morakniv knife, and would love a pocket carry knife (UK legal) for taking to the allotment.
@OriginalOwner777
@OriginalOwner777 Год назад
Duncan with you looking for a knife for the allotment that comes under good reason to carry a locking blade for a small heavy duty workhorse at a budget it is hard to beat the QSP penguin it comes in D2 steel with a mikarta handle and like a straight razor out of the box. Although locking as stated it would fall under good reason to carry when going too and from allotment also the lock is security for doing heavy work. As to how good I have used a penguin for fitting carpets instead of stanley blades it is sharp enough to do the work and comes with a decent sheepsfoot blade shape.

@simonh6371
@simonh6371 Год назад
@@RHC78 I don't own a UKPK but I think the Tern is better from all accounts (i.e. reviews etc) and because of it's specifications being better on the whole - the UKPK only has half a backspring and weaker detente/retention as far as I know. But I liked the Tern so much - prior to that I'd only used two handed opening knives - that I went on to buy the Spyderco Urban which is better than both I believe and I now carry that most days. I just wish it had G10 scales instead of FRN but honestly that doesn't effect it's performance which is excellent. I did pay £73 for it though which is more than I'd ever spent on a knife before but I think it's worth it.

One thing about the Byrd Tern's choil that is better than other slip joints with the choil is that it stays protective even if the knife starts to fold. On the boker for example when the knife starts to fold the choil gets invaded by the frame of the handle and pushes your finger out of safety - same with other knives. With the Tern you finger can stay safely in the choil even to the point of full closure

Actual,y there’s so many good knives out there lately around $40 -$80 . Still the praxis is a great deal or elementum or baby banter . These are all civivis for a reason becasue a person can’t go wrong with them or the new button locks from sencut seem like a great value as well the ones you showed here . I checked out a srm 2102 for $30 and it broke in real nice . I dare say it’s like a benchmade freak but it certain,y is , haha . Nice and light

Crkt ceo is a sweet thin knife 👍 how nice would that ceo be with some aftermarket carbon fiber scales ? They’re actually pretty easy to make . Trace the outline , figure the hole size and drill carefully . Attach the Dremel drum to a drill press or Dremel and run it around with the liners attached and blade off . It’s actually time consuming what am I saying ? It is easy enough though to make a knife by hand but very time consuming . Sometimes there’s not much to do in the winter cold so messing around in the garage is a thing around there 🎉❤

A good UK legal alternative to the Opinel without a locking collar (I can't buy into the insanity of making that safety feature illegal to carry) if you like the more traditional look is the range of smaller Jokers. There are slipjoint models with different handle materials, blade shapes and steels all at around 2.5 inches blade length. Do really like the Real Steal Luna too and I'm not a modern knife guy in the least.

Happy Friday Jon, disappointed that you did not include a Victorinox single blade knife in the line up - the budget priced ones like the Celidor handled 84mm Bantam, Alox 84mm bantam & even the Alox 93mm Solo ( AKA Swiss Army 1 ) are all very reasonably priced. Also something like the very budget friendly UK legal Rough Ryder Denim Micarta Folding Pocket Knife RR2181 Wharncliffe. As for Opinel - I have a strong dislike of a French gardening tool which doubles as kitchen knife for cutting garlic & stinky French cheese being described as a pocket knife for EDC when it belongs in the garden shed or kitchen cutlery draw. I understand the insane legal limitations in the UK have made it a Captive Market for knives that would not get a 2nd look in the rest of the world & if I was still resident in the UK I would be carrying a range of Victorinox pocket knives for EDC & certain other slip joints like the RR2181

I don’t want to cause trouble entering the UK with a knife in my checked luggage but would like to have something handy as we explore both the cities and the countryside.

The Opinel uses the Virobloc locking system and is thus not UK legal.

I never heard CRKT pronounced "cricket" before, is this a thing? Can't find anything on the Columbia River Knife & Tool website about it.

What is the difference in what kind of steel these knives are from if you are not allowed to buy knives with reliable locks? In that case, Victorinox is the best option.

if only you lived in the states, then you could enjoy the pleasures of locking knives.

Throughout the early years of my almost eight-decades-long life I usually carried many different non-locking folding pocket knives, and never (seriously) hurt myself with any of them. However after using my first locking-blade knife, I ONLY use and carry those now, because they are arguably safer and always feel more secure in use. I absolutely understand the fact that there are legal prohibitions against carrying them in many jurisdictions throughout the world, but I think those are all examples of legislation (or regulation) gone insane. Limiting blade length make much more sense, but even the usually legal three-inch models are sufficient to severely injure or kill people, so perhaps that kind of prohibition also is ridiculous. That said, I would not care to find myself in a crowd anywhere in the world where a lot of people are carrying butcher knives. Given the concealed-carry gun laws in most U.S. states where I live, I suppose that concern is also very silly of me. We live in a world gone mad, but I suppose that first happened eons ago.

Hi Jon, While watching the knives I couldn’t help but notice the great looking black vest with yellow tag hanging by the collar you’re wearing. What brand is that please? Is it Parajumpers? Thanks!

@Jon - the Boker War Toad, was that UKPC legal? It seems to comply and was friction only. The tang (?) At the back afforded it closure protection without a lock. I can't find one anywhere though sadly.

Great video, but you didn't say which of the 8 was your favourite and whether any would take the throne from your Victorinox 91mm. I currently own the Real Steel Luna which is a great little knife. Chose it over the Boker Tech Tool because it seemed to be a better knife.
@JonGadget

I stopped short of picking a favourite! The Vic has added functionality so not really a replacement for me but could be additional carry! Luna is best value in my view. Kansept I purchased after the review 😊

I had a few Opinel knives at one time, I used get one free with a shirt or Jumper when I bought them from Ernest Doe's here in the U.K. Nowadays rarely carry anything other than a Victorinox multi use. But for sure my go to when hiking fishing or out and about in the countryside is a lock knife, I have a good selection and having had a slip joint close on my fingers one time I would not use anything else. I keep all of my knives razor sharp too, as the saying goes a blunt knife is a dangerous knife!

One of many stupid laws in the UK is the non locking blade. I wonder if the blade snapped closed on my fingers if I could sue the government for negligence?

This selection is severely hampered by the exclusion of spyderco (not byrd) knives. They are not cheap any more, but they are still incredible. I own most of the items you feature here, and a spyderco urban or UKPK are better than any of them

I don't think the Boker XS is EDC anymore wince the law stated that its not just the cutting edge anymore but the blade length
