One trend that has been around a while, but I haven't seen much of lately, but may make a comeback is vintage and antique botanical prints, beautifully framed with matting. That will never go out of style in my book. I bought some antique botanical prints in London in 1997, had them professionally framed, and they still look timeless and never look dated.

Yes - a video about timeless design that's actually about timeless design and not just midcentury modern! Fantastic content, as always. I don't know if this counts as a 'trend' but I'm going to suggest natural wood tones as something timeless that never truly goes out of style.

Pure open concept style may go the way of the dinosaurs considering the astronomical prices for energy- or be a sign that you are on the wealthy side of town. In the morning, I only need a warm kitchen and in the evening a warm living room, why heat (or cool) both if not in use. Also I find that sturdy, 100% wood furniture is absolut timeless.

One thing I really love about this channel is consistency. I've been a subscriber for a while and I've seem how Garett is super consistent and not influenced by the trends or what other designers say. In other channels, in 2 weeks things that they suggested has become out of style! Garrett has a much deeper anchor in a true authentic style and that's what's reassuring for us. Your channel is a anchor providing consistency to us in this super 'trendy' world!

Especially agree about plaster walls (one of the many reasons why I chose to live in a condo in a historic prewar building). There is a subtlety and character that simply cannot be replicated with modern Sheetrock walls.

The only bad thing with plaster is trying to hang things with holes in the wall. Thank goodness for 3M hangars!

Will there be a comeback? I find crystal chandeliers, especially when they're vintage, absolutely timeless. In my opinion, there is no lamp that plays better with the beauty of light. About ten to fifteen years ago it was very fashionable to hang old chandeliers in the rooms, after that came the trend towards Sputnik lights (interesting but nothing compared to crystal)...I'll stick with the chandelier!

The modified open concept is the way to go, I think, too. The rise, or rather, consolidation of foodie culture and culinary education for everyday life makes geeking out in the kitchen much more of a thing, so partially making it accessible but not totally open when entertaining guests, is a good and feasible option. I have it like that in my own living space and swear by it.

My house is partially open concept as well! What really made it that way was I swapped the dining room and living room, and it was GENIUS! The house works soo much better :)

@bookmagicroe9553

Modified open concept is the best. When I cook there are pots, pans, and stuff all over. I don't want people to walk in the door and see all that. When the kids were toddlers, having walls meant we could put up baby gates - otherwise they are running all over and getting into everything. The huge open concept can be loud unless you have enough upholstery, rugs, and soft things to absorb sound.

I loooooove vintage rugs but they're out of my current budget for the size I need (not a fan of layered rugs personally especially jute) so I do have vintage looking rugs that are new. One day if I can afford larger rugs that are vintage I will absolutely do it because they're just amazing and timeless. For now I've got to prioritize paying down huge emergency vet bill debt, then paint, then floors. If I can replace my rugs with vintage ones, I've made it 😆

My last house was built in 1945 and had plaster walls. I like them, but it so much easier to damage them. I think what is timeless are things like real wood or bamboo floors, real wood furniture, solid core wood doors, stained wooden door and window frames and baseboards, real stone countertops - things made by nature, in other words.
@leevincent3960
@leevincent3960 2 года назад
Absolutely! Having lived on the southwest and now the East Coast, people must realize that bamboo and hard wood don't do well in a dry climate. If living in a dry climate, these products must be sealed immediately after install to avoid damage. Proper preservation of high quality products is necessary to preserve their beauty and timelessness.

There is nothing better than a hand knotted oriental rug! They are so densely knotted that if something like food, cat vomit etc. gets on them, it basically sits on top. It is then much easier to get up than on carpet, machine made rugs etc. Machine made rugs are evil is my mantra. (Carpet too)

I definitely agree with living a beautiful life. I’m in my mid 30’s and I have realized I have wasted a great amount of time, joy and resources in living a life that was not authentically me. I have now chosen to frame all aspects of my life by the William Morris quote. “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be beautiful or believe to be useful'. I have spent the last few years incorporating Persian rugs, chinoiserie, tailored slipcovers, silver and good china, and anything that whispers to the British colonial style into my home. It makes me SO happy to see that my home has become my little hobbit hole that acts as a solace, comfort, and a little slice of heaven here on earth. I’ve also spent much less and have gotten much finer quality pieces second hand as traditional pieces Aren’t appreciated by many. It’s so beautiful though, to sweep with a beautiful oiled wood and horsehair broom, or to write a letter on thick stationary and a weighty fountain pen, or to see the way lovely curtains are perfectly pinch pleated move with the wind- it’s a life that allows one to fall in love with life all over again! I have my fingers crossed for inset cabinets becoming mainstream and monetarily accessible. I’m currently designing my kitchen renovation, and I was quite surprised at the price point for Inset cabinets. I had to choose between stone countertops and inset cabinets, so I chose the countertops. But hopefully I won’t have to by the time the kitchen gets to the demo phase!

I love your way of thinking. My home is my sanctuary and it’s now something that is curated in order to be surrounded by quality pieces that I adore and have meaning rather than just throwing a pile of stuff into the house that I got on a whim or on special. After moving overseas and back and getting rid of loads of stuff, it really forces you to look at what you’re accumulating.

Vintage never goes out of style because not only do appliances for example last longer than those manufactured today, but furniture, decor, frames, lamps have craftsmanship that is lost today. (I’m so old things I grew up with are now called vintage lol )

Garrett, this video is perfect!!! Watching all of your videos has taught me to be a confident decorator! Currently, building a french country home, because it is what feels homey and comfortable to me. Too late for plaster walls, but i do have fluting and, inset cabinets...vintage rugs and real plants. My home would fit right in France. Elegant and refined while charming and comfortable at the same time. I give you credit for teaching me how to achieve MY OWN STYLE instead of following trends. Because of your guidence...I will be happy in my home no matter what trends come and go. You are the BEST!!! ❤❤❤❤ Uh...i missed Albert! 🥰🥰🥰

I feel like your channel is perfectly matched to me. I live in a historic home (even though I love more modern design). I love vintage rugs and I have one which is the inspiration for and statement piece in the rest of the house. Also, I also hate the consumerism and pressure to buy a bunch of new junk all the time. And, as I mentioned before, we have the same coffee table. 😊

I had no idea plaster walls weren’t common in the US! I have lived in both UK & Australia in plaster wall homes. After experiencing plaster board; plaster walls are definitely my preference and not something I would compromise on in order to save money when we build. I’m not into open plan but modified open plan is something I could get on board with! :)

My kitchen is open to the family room where we usually hang out and watch tv, but my house has a formal dining room and a front sitting room. I also have an entryway. I prefer the layout because I can watch the kids while I’m cooking but we also have a separate place to eat dinner together as a family. Plus, all of the cute little details that give my home character like arched doorways and French doors would be lost if we took all of the walls down. I do enjoy too having lots of wall space to hang art.

What a coincidence! I was just looking at a Big Chill refrigerator earlier today. I would love to have the vintage stove and refrigerator in a fun color, but they are SO expensive. $4,495 for the 33" Retro Fridge! I recently put in an offer on a home that was built in 1917 and if I get it (fingers crossed) I thought retro appliances would be the perfect choice if/when I remodel the kitchen. The kitchen definitely needs some TLC (along with the one bathroom, but I digress). I can't break the budget on kitchen appliances, since there are so many other areas that need attention. By the way, this old house has lath and plaster walls that have a few minor cracks, but otherwise in pretty good shape, considering their age.

I really hate calling a specific plant a trend because you can't just discard them once they're no longer the "it" plant, but I'm going to say the Ficus Tree. I scored a gorgeous 10 year old one off Marketplace and it's completely transformed my space. It makes such a statement! And it's also replaced me Ikea faux olive tree, which I'll now be returning lol. Awesome video, as always! :)

I was given 2 ficus trees by a neighbor who was moving out of state. I painted the room a darker color, and my ficus tree started dying! I moved it to a room with lighter color walls and it came back. I didn’t know they were so sensitive to a change in light. 😯

Modified open concept is so wonderful. We have formal entry, library/ office, living rooms and open concept kitchen/breakfast/den and I love being able to be with everyone or being able to entertain in the more formal spaces. That floorplan was one of the reasons we purchased our home and I’d recommend that style to anyone over open concept. I can’t think of a drawback, especially for families with kids.

I agree that all the trends you mentioned are timeless. I love fluting, for instance, and when my husband and I move to our home in Florida in a few months I will miss the fluted molding in my 1936 flat here in San Francisco. I love it so much I put shades inside the windows instead of hanging curtains because I wanted the fluted molding to shine. The flat also has plaster walls and fortunately my 1940s home in Florida does too. I will look into the retro inspired appliances when we do our kitchen reno. I have always lived an aesthetic lifestyle. I want everything I use and touch to be beautiful. I think dressing is an art form and seek to express my style in my wardrobe even if I am wearing tshirts and jeans. You are a perfect example of the aesthetic lifestyle. As always, loved the video.❤

My favourite trend right now is furniture and accents made from natural materials like rattan, bamboo, jute, and cotton! Mother nature always does it best 😊

I'm building out a tiny cabin - that last idea with the "open divided" areas is absolutely perfect idea to give an illusion of a separate room between my kitchen island and my sitting/dining area. Thank you for such great ideas.

Agree with You ❤❤ with the vintage, 50's style appliances, even the small ones like Coffee machine, toaster , kettle, microwave, they are so fun !! I've been in love with those since along time already even before they are back on trend.

So nice to hear someone that does not advocate for "open floor plan". I just never understood liking everyone watch me in a messy kitchen while I cook and clean up.

I grew up in the 50s when appliances in pink or turquoise were popular. They were so pretty. I am glad you can order them again. In the 70s it was copper tone, avocado, or harvest gold. I have stainless steel now but they seem cold. When they need replaced, I will definitely check into pink or turquoise appliances. Thank you for the video!

Hello 👋 I love an inset cabinet door, but the down side is you cannot hide the dings especially if you have children who are hard on your cabinet door. I love the vintage style appliances. I love the plant vibe outside, but I can’t keep them alive indoor so I leave that for the outdoors. Love your video’s as always you never disappoint!

I totally agree with “Modified” Open concept. I like rooms to be individually styled. I currently have an open concept home where the Dinning room is part of the Living room. They share one large wall. I am not fond of this. Therefore I try to Style the Dinning “area” to look like a different room which allows the Living “Area” to become a room of its own as well. After all, we have separate Bedrooms and Bathrooms. I also dislike Master bedrooms with open concept ensuites yuck! It’s nice to have privacy when you need it!

Late to the Garrett party, as well as to this video, but have loved the emphasis on classic but updated decor. Livability! What a concept, ha! Yes, our home should suit our lives. I have been tickled by the fact that as I have grown in my home (we have been here 20 years, now!), I have discovered my own style, finally. And that seems to be what you are saying on this channel. The English country thing has become my vibe in an updated way…. Inset kitchen doors, open, but semi separated living spaces , color, limited pattern, pared back objects on shelving, some live plants and vintage ish rugs. Yes, I finally love my home. It took time, though, with allowing myself to mix resale, thrifted, high end AND discount pieces . And I feel very fortunate and blessed to enjoy my living space…. Curated over time. New subscriber.

I agree with you on getting over the jungle vibe. I love a real plant artfully interspersed throughout the home, but whew 😮, it was getting a bit overwhelming there for a hot minute.

As always, a treat to watch your videos. with the great advice. I bought an old hoosier cabinet back in the 70's and it has followed me for every move, including living in Europe. It just moved to my houseboat and it looks fabulous. I would much rather pay folks to move my old furniture so I can keep it, then ditch it and buy new. Not that I have not used IKEA, it has its place, like in my craft room. Love the big storage drawers and cabinets.

I'm always envious of people who have an aesthetic! I always feel like I'm too indecisive to stick to just one. Not because I like to follow trends but because I love playing dress up with my clothes depending on my mood or how I want to feel. So really it's a projection of how I'm feeling at the time or want to be perceived at the time. Not that I've done any research on it, but I wonder if there are vintage-inspired appliances that are also energy efficient. I think that would be my main priority nowadays. On that note, I think anything energy efficient or that contributes to a passive home, is sustainable or allows people to be more self-sufficient are some things that will stay around for a long time. I think (or perhaps optimistically hope) that the days of overconsumption for the purpose of keeping up with trends that change at an ever-increasing pace are in the rearview for good.
