The Polish driver in the first lorry was drunk (twice over limit) had been seen driving erratically beforehand including wrong way round a roundabout and at one point slowing to 11 mph. He had also been disqualified from driving heavy vehicles. He was then seen stopped in the live lane without hazards flashing for 12 minutes. The minibus driver had slept for only 3 hours before the crash and may have been doing other work during the previous day. This might explain why he stopped instead of filtering into the 2nd lane. The FedEx driver had been on the phone (hands free and legal) for an hour up to the crash and was on cruise control (also legal). The mini bus driver was killed. The other 2 drivers were charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Both pleaded not guilty but the FedEx driver pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of causing death by careless driving. The Polish driver was found guilty and sentenced to 14 years in prison. The FedEx driver was judged not guilty of dangerous, but guilty of careless driving and recieved a prison sentence of 3 years and 4 months. 14 months was the max for dangerous, the careless sentence was reduced somewhat because of the early admission of guilt by the FedEx man and his expressed contrition.

Causing death by dangerous driving would be a hard charge to sustain when the vehicle driven by the Pole had been stopped for 12 minutes before the collision. But that's Britain; when something really bad happens, somebody has to carry the can. Sounds like there were at least 12 in the minivan.

UK motorways are very dangerous. They are poorly maintained. They are always congested with traffic. There are endless roadworks. The air pollution the UK generates is scandalous. The reckless government encourages people to use roads by making train fares extortionate. They encourage more and more freight to be carried on third world roads by heavy diesel trucks which clogs up these horse and cart routes even further. Due to rising national poverty and good governance, no new roads will be built which means the public will have to be prepared to be stuck in more and more traffic jams in the future. Tourism in the UK? Try setting off from London to Manchester on a public holiday by car and see how long it takes you to reach the destination by these joke motorways? Pure punishment
