It took me many decades to splurge on a good watch too. Like yourself I went with the sea master also, although I had to go with the rose gold accents. Now Grand Seiko’s are on the horizon for a un-divers watch.

Cars for sure. I started buying certified pre-owned luxury cars years ago. The CPO programs from the luxury brands are very good. You get extended warranty’s .Some give you two years of regular maintenance. The original owner gets stuck with the depreciation and you get a great car at a reduced price.

Hey John. Could not agree with you more. Depending on a person’s interest and budget, spending a little more on certain purchases will last you so much longer and give you more joy. Bearing in mind certain “High End Things” for example, watches, cars, electronics, etc need to be serviced or maintained. I am saying this, because, the cost therein can be expensive. So by all means buy better quality, however consider the upkeep of these purchases. Thanks J. Great content as always

If you have the opportunity, try a Pinot Noir from the Niagara region in Canada. Our Pinot has good acidity, nice cherry notes, with some black pepper. A really interesting take on Pinot Noir, though hard to find outside of Canada due to small volumes. Also, great choice on guitar players. Saw Joe Satriani in concert back in my college days.

I've purchased Wrangler jeans from Walmart for under $20. They're heavy denim, have zero defects, and still going strong after a decade. If you go out west, you'll see many cowboys and ranchers wearing Wranglers. Of course, I'm not wearing the Wranglers for social affairs, just casual and work. I've purchased a few pair of Calvin Kleins. They both tore in the rear at the same exact spot along the pocket within a year.

Great video, John. I love my dad but he is a "frugal" guy. Just in the last 10 years have I been able to overcome my upbringing and allow myself to enjoy experiences and a bit of luxury. Haha. When I was young we went on few vacations, always shopped for bargains to a point where we'd go without for months waiting for the right sale, and always fixed everything ourselves which often took 5x longer to complete and ended up half-ass. Fixing things yourself can be satisfying but ultimately sucks up one's time and is full of compromises. These days I spend money to hire tradesmen for repairs since the job is done right and completed quickly by those skilled in a particular trade so I can enjoy the finished product. I have stepped up a level or two when buying shoes, jackets and other clothing items as well as furniture and art pieces; as you said, one feels good when wearing quality pieces and classic quality furnishings never go out of style. My bigger lux extravagance these days is finer wine. Summing up, as one commenter said, "Buy cheap and buy twice." I use the motto, "I'm too poor to buy cheap things"... If you do, you end up replacing or re-doing many times over when compared to higher quality goods or services.

Interesting video. I agree about luggage: it's better to pay a little bit more for a good quality luggage. Jeans: it depends of what you are looking for. Sometimes American Eagle jeans are OK, sometimes you want something really better such are John Varvatos. Shoes: yes, spend more for leather shoes if you want decent quality. Watches: obviously an Omega watch is much better than a Swatch.

Great video John! I agree! I also think you have to have realistic expectation with what brand you buy. I know if I pick up something from H&M, it is unlikely to last longer than something I buy from Bonobos. I think Express and JCrew are solid middle ground. I recently purchased a sweater polo from Todd Snyder - more than I have paid for a shirt, but man the quality is next level. I only have a few solid watches I wear and they work for me. Regarding fragrances - I do have several higher end niche fragrances. Though there are some solid clones coming out that smell almost exactly the same of the higher end fragrances they are cloning. Anyways, cheers!

I think things you are passionate about, like your hobbies or travel, are things you can spend a little more on. You'll appreciate the quality or experience more. So being into cars, while others might think it's a waste, is worth it to you. I love bikes so I spend my money on that, while other things I'm not as into I will spend on something more budget-friendly. My dad was a pretty frugal man, he had lots of money but would only spend on what he needed. He was however, a car guy, so luxury cars were always in the garage. That's what he liked, that's what he spent on.

Nice things do tend to last longer. And if you look around specially in the watch community and car community and see what people have even if it is a classic or vintage you know what lasts or what is very dependable. If you can afford it, I highly recommend a nice watch. Take time to enjoy a few watchmaker’s videos of disassembly and reassembly for service. Incredible feats of engineering. And a watch will be one of your most intimate possessions, literally sharing most every event of your life. Explains why they can be such cherished heirlooms. Omega is a great choice, but there are many. Also consider vintage. Very cool to have and wear a watch manufactured many decades ago, 40s, 50s, etc and still working like new.

Started noticing the 300 the last couple of videos and kept thinking to myself that I didn't remember seeing it before. Been getting out of the "just buy the cheapest thing" phase of myself over the last few years and nowhere near the, "hey I'm headed out and buying a $1000 pair of jeans" yet, heck not even to the $200 mark yet, but do see significant quality differences in a lot of items as you move up the rungs of $. Shoes, cars, watches and suits are the easy go to items that I have experience with over the last couple of years. Is it worth it for everyone? Nope, but when I am looking to get something that I need to last more than a season or two and that is actually comfortable, then yeah, it is to me.

Interesting video with some food for thought. I guess it is all relative, that is how much you spend for an item. Relative to what you value, relative to your income and relative to your needs. For example, if you bought inexpensive jeans all your life paying $25 to $30 per pair then suddenly going to Express and purchasing a pair of jeans for $88 is to you expensive. Further, if now you can afford the $88 jean and value the additional comfort and selection then you have stepped up. Whereas if you've always spent $200 for a pair of jeans then that $88 Jean is probably not what you would consider sufficient. In any case, your video gives one pause to reconsider and think about wants versus needs and values. Thanks

Pretty good video! I agree with you on all point. On cars, I would say that not all luxury brands are equal. I know people like the German cars, but the reliability of brands like BMW and Audi is just not that. I much prefer Acura and Lexus (and I recently purchased an Acura TLX Type S). On cosmetic surgery, I would expand that to say ALL surgery. Sure you can go to your local healthcare provider when it's time for that knee replacement, but you would be much better served by finding the group that has a reputation for superior outcomes and going there, even if you have to travel and book a hotel to do so. As far as watches go, I find it interesting that we have had a similar evolution (starting with brands like Orient and Seiko and moving up to Omega). Like you, I'm 54, and starting to appreciate that, due to my hard work, I can afford such things. The Rolex brand is selling at a premium and not worth 3x to 4x that you would pay for Omega (and let's face it, if it's good enough for James Bond, it's good enough for us!).

There are some go-to brands for me that are worth the extra money. 1) Louis Vuitton: yes, it's stupidly expensive, but the LV items I have bought over the years not only last; they take a beating and still manage to look brand new, like magic. Quick story - I lost my LV wallet while on a bike trip through Connecticut. About 2 weeks later, I received it in the mail (with everything in it except $140 in cash) and it was obviously beaten by the elements. All it took was a little bit of hair conditioner to bring it back to new condition. 2) Lululemon: Also extremely durable construction despite using feather-light fabrics. 3) Merino wool Tshirts. I will never buy cotton Tshirts ever again. Merino wool Tshirts not only feel luxurious, they drape/conform beautifully and are lightweight and extremely breathable. Also, they are machine washable and you can actually wear them several times between washings because they stay fresh... like magic! When I'm on a long hiking or biking trip, when baggage weight is critical, I can wear the same shirt every day and wash/dry it in the sink only when needed. I like SmartWool and Icebreaker, but there are some other boutique luxury brands that make them as well. Once you go wool, everything else is BULL.

@@40OverFashion I also love my merino wool shirts. I love wool clothing in general. I however am not so sure about the wool t shirts when it comes to fashion. I don't think they have a very dressy look. Maybe I am wrong. I hope so. :)

John, I definitely agree with all your choices here, especially cars. But I would add cameras to this list. Yes, everyone has a phone with a camera but it’s just not the same. The quality of the pictures isn’t nearly that of a real camera. Phones use something called computational photography to add special effects like blurring out the background for a portrait and it all just looks fake. A good mirrorless camera with a great zoom lens, typically 24-70mm can produce awesome images that you just can’t get from a cell phone. Plus there are some cameras out there that are absolutely beautiful works of art themselves like the Fujifilm X-T5 or X100V (the later nearly impossible to find and you will pay over MSRP) with their retro-styling.

I really enjoyed this video John. I totally agree with you about tools. If you work in the trades you can't afford to have cheap unreliable tools. I bought a Hilti cordless drill/driver back in 2010. It was quite expensive compared with other drills at that time. I use it everyday and I'm still using it. I have only replaced 1 of the 2 batteries. Reliability is worth the higher price tag. As for vacations, my wife and I would rather spend money on having unique experiences that a destination offers. We stay at cheaper accommodations because we only sleep there and are out the rest of the day. We would rather spend on unique meals and tours instead of spending our time in a hotel. Also, just bought a pair of Paige jeans. Favorite pair of jeans I own. Keep up the great content.

I think a lot of it depends on where we are in life my parents are both in their late seventies a thing they are saying a lot it live outlast us. I believe we get what we pay for is true of most goods and services. In clothes it's the quality of the material , cut and stititching and overall finish of the product. For something like a television I would only buy from store where I can see the quality of picture and sound. The same thing for buying a new bed what I find most comfortable . As I have to travel by train to London I don't envisage buying an expensive watch as I would be woried about it being damaged or attracting attention. Some countries have a less is more approah like the Nordic countries instead of keeping up with the Joness.

I think there are different aspects of "luxury" that needs to be examined. And of course, value is all relative. I care less, for example, about the brand but the build quality of clothes and shoes. I'm happy to pay more for better quality fabrics and construction. I actually prefer that the brand is not seen. Only I know when I am wearing bespoke suites, shirts, and shoes. I want to fight against the wastes of fast fashion and continue supporting the artisans so that the craftsmanship continues. Invest in good shoes and a good bed; you are either on one or the other most of the day. Watches are a different beasts because they are amazing but really absurd items that I love. Ultimately, they are unnecessary but IMO beautiful items of engineering and art that I appreciate. Experiences like special vacations are also something that can’t be replaced. These are memories you take with you for the rest of your life. At the end of the day, I invest and support brands and companies that matter to me and not to show off. I want things that will last - including memories.

Cars. You drive what your business requires to be presentable to clients and can write off, or what your family needs. The car for yourself, if you can afford that level of hobby or experience, should be an expression of what excites and motivates you. I like building and touring my classics, but I "wear the uniform" for clients.

For me the more you use something the nicer it should be - if I use/see it every day make it a nice one. I like nice cars as I spend a lot of time in it, have a nice wallet you carry it everyday …. I don’t need the best chain saw as I may only use it once a year …
