Your tips are excellent! Looking forward to visiting Vienna next month. I will try to see if we can book your tour guide services 😊. Thank you for making these concise and fun to watch videos!
Thank you Grete . I was born in Vienna and emigrated 1969 . Whenever I visited my hometown the use of trains , buses and subways became increasingly confusing to me. I solved that by renting a car . Since the last couple of years that proved to be no solution either , because parking has become a nightmare. Next time I will get the app you mention and try my luck .
It can be added that Wiener Linien tickets are also valid on the S-Bahn (Schnellbahn) and the local railway to Baden (Wiener Lokalbahn/Badner Bahn), on their routes within Vienna. S-Bahn trains run to many destinations in eastern Austria (including Vienna Airport in Schwechat), and there are many stations within Vienna. Vienna has a very good public transport system: almost everywhere can be reached easily and quickly, generally on time, tidily and safely. The authorities in Vienna had enough sense not to dismantle the tram network, as happened in many metropolises in the second half of the 20th century.
@@waitulfifika3415Yes, this ticket is valid on S7, but only within Vienna , i.e. from the station Wien Kaiserebersdorf, for the leg from the airport to the station Wien Kaiserebersdorf you need to buy a separate ticket of ÖBB (Austrian Railways), at a price of less than €2 (the price of separate ÖBB ticket from the airport to the centre, for example to the station Wien Mitte, is more than €4). At Vienna Airport there is the ÖBB desk, where you can buy both ÖBB and Wiener Linien tickets.
Viele Dank für die Information! Ich besuche Wien in 4 Tage und das Transportsystem ist so unterschiedlich, insbesondere im Vergleich zu Sofia und Paris. Grüße aus Bulgarien! 😇🙏🏻🇧🇬💖
After attending schönbrun concert on Sunday ,is it ok to take the subway to central station? Take a taxi is way better? Roughly how much? / From a fist time traveler 😂
Great video, can you take suitcases on the subway? We’re arriving by the Cat train and hope to get the underground from the main station to the nearest tube station to K and K Palais Hotel
Hi, I have only one full day in Vienna, may I know which train or subway stations can lead me to the walking tour in the city? Or do i need to train hop for places like st Stephen cathedral, city centre, shopping street, etc. appreciate your advice, thanks ahead 😊
If you explore the city with my vienna audiouguide, I recommend to exit at either "Stephansplatz" or "Karlsplatz / Oper". Most sights in the city center are within walking distance. You can purchase my audioguide via this link: www.gretewalz.com/audioguide Enjoy your time in Vienna 😊
Hi! The ÖBB is pretty good when it comes to being on time. Official statistics say, that their trains are 90% on time (which means a delay of max. 5 minutes).
Hallo Vielen Dank fuer einen tollen Film. :-) I have one question. It is possible to add in the mobile app more then one passenger? I usually travel with my family
Hi Grete, thanks for this awesome video. I would like to ask if there is such a thing like Austrian Pass? Wherein I can purchase a ticket to travel the different regions in Austria? I'm planning to stay in Vienna but would love to visit other places like Salzburg ,Graz and Hallstatt.
With the "Klimaticket" ("Climate Ticket") you can use all of the public transport in Austria and it is valid for one year. But since it is quite expensive (1095 EUR) it is probably not the right choice for a weekend. I think the cheapest choice would be to try to book your train or bus tickets well in advance. Then you will be able to get the cheapest deals. And then buy passes for the local public transport. Also you could look into the "Vorteilscard" of the Austrian Train Services (ÖBB). With this card you will get 50% off the price of a regular train ticket. If you buy the "Vorteilscard" online at shop.oebbtickets.at you will get the "Vorteilscard" cheaper (66 EUR instead of 99EUR). Hope this helps and have a good time in Austria!
Hi Grete. Sorry if this is a silly question, but what is a single fare ticket for? Does it mean I can only use 1 subway/bus/tram ride & that is it? If I have to take a bus & tram to my destination, should I buy only 1 single fare ticket or 2 single fare tickets? Thank you!
That is a great question, since it is a little bit different all over the world :) In Vienna a single fare means: * The ticket is valid for one trip in one direction. * The means of transport (subway, tram, bus) can be changed as often as desired. * The trip may not be interrupted and may last a maximum of 80 minutes. So if you need to change for example from the subway to to bus, to get to your destination, you only need one ticket.
In Vienna, there's no need to show your ticket before boarding the bus, tram, or subway. However, it's essential to keep your ticket with you and not discard it until your ride is complete or until you've exited the subway station. This is because ticket inspectors conduct random inspections on public transport.
Thank you for info, very helpful! at Viking cruise docking port, I see U1 train is available, and can transfer to tram. is it same way of purchasing ticket? thank you again
Yes, just purchase your ticket at the u1 station. It is a metro station, but your ticket will be valid for the whole trip, even if you change from the metro to the tram. In the video I give a step by step guide how to purchase the ticket at an automate in the subway. It will be the same at the u1 subway station :)
Please also tell your Tourists this year, that public transit this summer has a lot of construction going on. Most tourists have no idea and also a lot of car-enthusiast Viennese people as well.
We bought the OBB train ticket from the machine at the airport station. It was very easy with options available in different languages. My partner had watched a different video by someone else who stated the ticket had to be validated at a blue machine before getting on. This is wrong, there is no need, the ticket is valid on purchase. We missed the train as a result of trying to find the validation machine! But the staff allowed us to use the next train 30 minutes later
Thank you for sharing your experience, as it is very valuable for other visitors in Vienna! The tickets for the National Railway service ÖBB indeed work a bit differently: If you purchase your ticket for a specific connection, there is no need to validate it. Whereas with Wiener Linien (the company that operates public transport in Vienna), you can purchase a ticket to use on another date. That's why you have to validate it to indicate when you started your journey. Glad to hear, that your journey still worked!
Hi, I am a bit confused. I see buying 2 day tickets would be cheaper option than to use 48 hours ticket as cost would be cheaper that wat if I am arriving Vienna at 10 am lets say and leave by 8 am the dat after.
If you travel to the airport you have to buy a separate ticket. However, if you go by ÖBB train, you can select, that you already have ticket for Vienna and the train ticket will get cheaper. Also to give you a heads up: Double check on the ticket automate, what connection you are purchasing your ticket for. At the Wiener Linen automates, they only offer tickets for the Vienna Airport Busses, not for the trains!
Not sure which mall you are referring to. But if you mean the Shopping City Süd (SCS) and go by Badner Bahn: Yes you need another ticket, since SCS is actually a bit outside of Vienna. You can purchase that directly in the Badner Bahn.
Hi, I would ask to you (if you now) a question... I wanna visit the schonbrunn castle with the imperial tour and I am an univesity student. The web site said that i can pay less for student discount but i need a ISIC card. My question is...i can pay less also if I have the university badge or only if I have that card (ISIC) ? Tks if you know
Thank you for this! It's really helpful. One question for the weekly ticket though, do we need to validate everyday or just once before our first ride? Thank you!
Thank you! The day passes are for the city centre. Can I use it also to go to Belvedere and Schönbrunn? And we arriving with the train on Wien Hbf, can we use a day pass also to go from there to the city centre?
Hi! If you buy a day pass from Wiener Linien (which is the company that operates the public transport in Vienna), you can travel all over vienna with it. No need to purchase an extra ticket. You can use your day pass to go from Hauptbahnhof to the city center. Please also check the video at 03:52 where I explain this in more detail!
I have a question, I'm going to Vienna for three days and want to buy a 72 hr ticket. How is the ride from the airport to the center in this case? I read somewhere that if I have a 73 h ticket I just need to buy a single ticket for 2,40 euros to the borders and then I can take the S7 or OBB
Yes that is correct. I explained this in detail in my video on how to get from the airport to the city center ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qjq2Tb5xSSY.html&lc=UgyqCbt9McC60SCfKdV4AaABAg
Like it and I am wondering if you buy a single Verkehrsverbund Ost Region VOR ticket will that cover local transportation in Vienna in addition to Austrian Federal railway trains within the same tariff region. I based it on the German versions Dresden Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe Rhein Main Verkehrsverbund and Frankfurt am Main Wiesbaden
You don't need to scan the ticket in the app. Just show it, if you get checked by a ticket inspector. They do random checks, so make sure you have your phone with the ticket in the app with you.
If you want to see many things in Vienna, the Vienna Pass can be a good idea. But I would recommend to first, check how much each sight that you want to see, costs on its own. Then, see if the Vienna Pass is cheaper for you.
Hello :) I have a question regarding the "Vienna Airport Lines VAL 2 service". I've been reading some reviews online suggesting unreliability, particularly regarding bus driver behavior. I need to use this service around 4am, I'm afraid it's a bad idea. Is the reliability of the VAL 2 a concern, or would you recommend another option to ensure I make my flight on time?
Not sure which ticket you refer to, but since the airport is outside the city limits, you will need an extra ticket. For a detailed explanation, please watch my video on how to get from Vienna Airport to the city center ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qjq2Tb5xSSY.html
We’re going to Vienna 3 days later and I have a question. My son was born in 15/11/2018. He is not completely 6 years old but as we are in 2024 ,because of he was born in 2018 I got confused. Do they pay close attention or is it fine? Is it free for him?
Hi Greta, really well detailed and informative video. Quick question, I got a ticket from Wien HBF to Halstatt direct at 8.40am. however the ticket says valid for 24hours. So, does this mean, I can get on a train earlier than the one at 8:40am? I don't mind one change at Attnag-Pucheim. Please could you advise. Sorry I am asking the question here, I tried the OBB customer service but no response.
Yes. With the weekly ticket you can use the public transport in Vienna as much as you want. Ony a few private owned connections (e.g. City Airport Train, Vienna Airport Lines Busses) are excluded.
No, the day ticket will only be valid for the city of Vienna. The airport is a little bit outside of Vienna, so you have to buy a ticket for this part of the connection.
It can definitely be a good option, depending on what and how much you want to see. I would calculate which and how many attractions you want to see and then check if it pays off for you!
Very helpful. I’m visiting Vienna next week. Thanks. Just One question, what about airport to city centre or my hotel transportation? Can I buy the bus ticket for same on Wien Mobil app and that’s accepted by buses on airport?
I was looking for the same answer, and she aswered in other questions below. You need to buy an adicional ticket because the airport is outside the city area, but if you have the city ticket the price is will reduced.
Not bad. Lots of info left to be desired. What about the different types of tickets including those on a day trip going outside of Vienna. How about the link for the app?
Hi Greta, very helpful information about the public transport in Vienna. How come the price of the 1-week ticket is £30.90? In your vlog it's £17. Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you..
Hi, the price for the public transport in Vienna ist 17,10 EUR. Not sure, where you found 30,90£. For further information on the ticket prices of the public transport in Vienna, please check the website of "Wiener Linien", which operates the public transport in Vienna.
We all thank you for your videos! Excellent job! We will come to your beautiful city at the end of September for 6 days. Since we'll leave the personal automobile at P+R Hütteldorf, I wonder if the 7-days ticket acquired via the Wien Mobile App will be enough to take the OBB or S trains from Hütteldorf to Westbahnhof. Or do I need to buy supplemental train tickets in Hütteldorf for these trains? It's unclear to me because this route is inside Vienna City. It's not the same situation as for the route from the Airport to the city. I will be grateful if you can help me with an answer.
Yes you can use the 7 day ticket in for ÖBB trains within Vienna. No need to buy an extra ticket. If you cross the city boarder with the ÖBB trains, you have to pay for the distance outside the city. -But you can select, that you already have a ticket for Vienna, which makes the train ticket cheaper.
@@gretetheaustrianguide Tks, another question....the 72h ticket is valid also to go from the city to the airport (or from the airport to the city) thank you so much
Is there any difference in which transport we can use between 72 hours ticket and 7 day vienna ticket? They have same price yet one has 7 days of validity
Hello, in both cases, you can use all of the public transport in Vienna (bus, tram, metro). Only the city airport train, airport buses, and the touristy hop-on-hop-off buses are not included. In fact, the tickets are exactly the same, except for the different times they are valid for. Honestly, the pricing doesn't make much sense to me either! ;)
Thanks for your informative video. I want to buy 48-hours VIENNA ticket online. As I understand I get the ticket in PDF format. It allows me to specify the date and time from when I want to activate it. Since I can carry a PDF ticket in both print and soft format do I need to validate it again before first use? If yes, how? Please not I do not plan to install the app.
Since the online ticket already states the specific time, when it is valid, there is no need to validate it any more. This ticket can be displayed as an e-ticket (pdf) directly on your smartphone used as a PDF ticket in printed form.
Hello, I was looking into the 24h public transport ticket on the Wein Mobil app and it's not clear at all if this ticket includes the OBB local trains you mentioned in your other video about the transfer between airport and city. I am looking at the S7 train which should be included, yet on the app it mentions that CAT it's exluded (makes sense) and also ''airport rapid transit'', what does that mean? Is the S7 an airport rapid transit? thanks
Within Vienna you can use the ÖBB trains with your Wiener Linien ticket. Butt if you go outside of Vienna you need to buy an extra ticket. If you take one of the ÖBB trains (S7 or railjet), you only have add a ticket from the Vienna city boarder to the airport. You can select that at the ÖBB automats. CAT is a private owned company, so the Wiener LInien ticket does not include that and you have to pay extra. Within the Wien Mobil App you can also buy tickets for the "Vienna Airport LInes" which are busses. They are also not included in the Wiener Linien Ticket.
Hi there. Thank you - great video. Really helpful. I visit Vienna next week and will be buying a 72 hour travel ticket. I don’t think I can use this ticket from the airport as the airport is outside the core zone. Is that right? Is there any way around this or do I need to buy a separate ticket at the airport or an add on ticket as far as the core zone, then the 72 travel ticket from then onwards? I hope this makes sense. Thank you.
The 72hours ticket is only valid within Vienna. You need to buy an extra ticket, when you are going to the airport. However, this ticket will be cheaper, since you only need to pay for the short distance between the Vienna city boarder and the airport.
If you have a ticket, you can enter the bus or tram without showing it. Also you can use every door, not just the one in the front. Exept if you use one of the long distance busses eg. to go to Graz or Salzburg, you will have to show your ticket to the driver. But not, if you use the regular public transport in Vienna :)
Thanks a lot for your tips it will help me a lot on my trip to vienna next month, but I can't find the day ticket on the wein mobile app, which is 5.80. Did they discontinue it?
Thank you for your information! I just down load the Wien App, but does my 10 years old kid need a ticket on public transportation also? Do i can buy tickets for her also through the App?
hi, can i ask how does purchasing a ticket on the app work? is it a validated ticket displayed on my screen only that i show a ticket inspector if asked?
Yes. Usually I keep the digital Ticket open on my Smartphone, because in case of an inspection it would be quicker to show. The Inspector might ask you for some kind of ID in combination with your Ticket.
Hi, Thank you for the video. If I buy a ticket on the metro machine for taking a bus later, I choose validate later? and to it on the bus or tram? and how to I validate a 1 day ticket if I purchase it online or the App? Thank you
Hi! I would choose "validate later" and then just stamp the ticket on the bus or tram. If you buy the ticket in the app it will be valid immediately or the time you selected. No need to validate it separately.
Public transport is in service on national holidays (like Christmas). However there might be longer intervals on some lines. I recommend to check your connection on the websites of the provider (like ÖBB or Wiener Linien).
Please watch my video on how to get from the airport to the city center. I included a step by step descripion in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qjq2Tb5xSSY.html
Please, can someone tell me where are the boards of Zone 100??? Nobody can answer, but everyone says that 1 ticket is for trip in one zone!!! How to understand which zone I am going?
I am a little confused. How are the 72-hours ticket and the 1-week ticket the same price (17.10EUR)? Also, do they offer discounts at museums or this is a completely separate thing?
Yes, these tickets cost the same and the pricing doesn't make sense to me either 😅 There are discounts for museums. Please watch my Vienna on a budget video to learn more :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LKsS6VS_yN8.html
Hi Grete, thanks for your video. May i ask which train company is the cheapest to travel from Vienna main station to Salzburg? And from Salzburg to Vienna Airport?
To travel from Vienna to Salzburg (and back) you can go by the ÖBB (federal railway service) and Westbahn (private trains). they both offer good and reliable service. Westbahn however doesn't stop at the main train station in Vienna, but on Westbahnhof. Both companies offer tickets starting from around 24 EUR. -But you need to book well in advance to get these cheap tickets.
Hi! The weekly be valid from for a calendar week: from Monday 12:00 am (midnight) until the following Monday 9:00 am. If you want to travel from Friday to Monday, it is better to look into the 7 days Vienna ticket (available only online via the wiener Linien Webshop or the Wiener Linien App). Alternatively you could get the 72 hour ticket at the automate and ad single fare tickets.
Thank you so much for your reply. One more question: can I buy the 72 hour ticket at the airport and use it on my way into Vienna? My wife and I are very excited about our first trip to Vienna next week. Your channel has been a great help. @@gretetheaustrianguide
Thank you for your video, it is very helpful. Kids under 15 ride for free during the holidays and Sundays. Do you know if the S7 or OBB from the airport to Vienna is also in that category? I am also looking to purchase the 7 days pass, in the website says the ticket is valid for seven days (until 01:00 am on the eighth day) if I start using it on a Sunday, do you know if the pass is good until next Sunday 1am or Monday 1am?
Since the airport is outside of Vienna, you will have to purchase a ticket at least for the distance between the city boarder and the airport. I don't think, that the free ride for kids in Vienna also applies to S7 and the ÖBB, but to make sure, please check that directly at the ticket counter. When you buy a 7-day ticket online, it will show the specific date and time it's valid. Just add the ticket to your online shopping cart on the wiener linien website, and it will precisely indicate when it it is valid.
Hey hi Grete.. I will be visiting Austria this April and your videos are really helpful and informative 😊. I just have one query. Where and which sim to buy in Austria for the internet.. I searched a lot but I did not get proper info related to it.. it would be really great if you could help me with this.. Thanks in Advance😊
As a Tourist, I'd go to one of the 3 Big Cell Phone Network Providers: A1, 3, T-Mobile. They should have dedicated Staff to explain the process to you. You'll have to provide an ID and maybe fill out some Form. This can also be done in Supermarkets, which can be very stressful when you have 10 People behind you waiting in line. I would also not go to one of those smaller Mobile Phone "Stores" that have funny Names like "City Mobile" or "Mobile World", they'll try to sell you a cheap Wallet and a cheap Watch, or whatever.
@@rasikamali644That seems to be the most expensive Option. I'd rather try to reach my Accomodation first, and from there look for a SIM Card Shop. You might also consider an E-SIM, if your Phone supports that.
Hello. If I get a 48 hr ticket and I need to go to the airport, does that require me to buy an additional ticket for the airport or does the 48 hr ticket apply?
Since the airport is outside of Vienna you have to buy a ticket. But you can select, that you already have a ticket for Vienna, which reduces the price.
Anyone knows if you need to somehow "scan" the ticket on your phone when entering a bus, subway, train or similar, or do you just show it on your phone if a ticket inspector asks you to?
When you buy a ticket through the app or online shop, there's no need to validate or scan it. Additionally, you don't have to scan it when boarding a bus, tram, or subway. Just make sure you have your phone with you to show your ticket in case a ticket inspector asks for it during a random check.
After a disastrous week trying to find my way around WienOhneHilfe using public transport I tried to get a ticket for the airport from an underground ticket machine. I clicked on Airport - it seemed logical - and paid for my ticket. One station before the airport, inspectors got on the train and told me my ticket was for a bus. I tried to explain how I obtained it and asked why an underground ticket machine would sell a bus ticket; the inspector did not comment but asked me to get off the train and buy another ticket. I would never return to Vienna!
@user-tj3kn8qy4h The problem is that the controllers are sometimes really rude. I've heard they get bonuses for people they ,,catch" travelling whitout a valid ticket. It doesn't matter what happened and if their machine sold you that ticket, in the end it's allways your fault. And they pick the easiest victims they can find - students, tourists, thin women! I've experienced a situation where a man was shouting and insulting (don't know how to say that in english, in german we say ,,pöbeln") the whole ride. Controllers got on the tram and I thought, well, one time such a person has had bad luck. No, they controllers didn't say anything. They picked a quiet, small woman (from apperance I would say student) and fined her for travelling whitout a vallid ticket.
Excuse me, I'm visiting Vienna soon and I will arrive at the Main Train station with one luggage, so should I pay a ticket for my luggage too? Thank you in advance.
Hello Grete, after I buy ticket for 24 hours I just validate it once and it is good use for 24 hours, no need to validate again and again before riding right?
Hi! You only need to validate it the first time you use it. After that, there's no need to validate again. The 24-hour period begins from the moment you first validated it.
Hi! There are different connections to go from Hallstadt to Vienna. Please check out the website of ÖBB to find the connection that ist best for you. The website is available in English: www.oebb.at/en Enjoy your trip!
Please also tell your Tourists to be aware on the subway platform that they have to find the less crowded spots and not just all bunch up like a huge tour group with no guide.

You probably bought a "vienna airport lines" ticket which is a bus shuttle service which is operated by a subsidiary company of Öbb. Therefore its obviously not valid for a train. Next time maybe inform yourself beforehand on the internet or by asking staff at an infopoint. Because like how can you expect to ride with any train you like, just because the ticket you bought says airport on it...
