@@brittianyistre Of course he already knew this knowledge. No one thinks otherwise. The effort and research came in finding examples of each style so we could easily understand what he was talking about. And then putting it all together in a concise 16:50 minute video. That took some time......which I appreciate. That's all we are saying. Thanks again, Drew!

"Monochromatic" is a useful aesthetic and can be quite beautiful when done correctly. A friend of mine has a VERY eclectic personal style when it comes to collecting furniture (Victorian chairs, MCM sofa, Louis XV bedroom, etc.) To tame all of this mess, he reupholstered EVERYTHING in the same cream-colored raw silk, painted a lot of the wood pieces black, and then painted every wall in his house dark taupe. The effect was fantastic. His place went from thrift-shop-chaos to magazine-perfect almost instantaneously.
@illehup9505
@illehup9505 2 года назад
Personally I think mixing & matching is the way to go. Some design styles I think only work in magazines, so taking various elements of multiple design styles is much more practical (assuming the mixing is done well).
@RaniaMich
@RaniaMich 2 года назад
This is something Emily Henderson talked about in her first book, I believe. She speaks about different basic styles and then about how you can mix styles to create cohesive looks. I'm too "all over the place" to have a truly curated home, but I can sometimes stop myself when making a decision and rationalise. 👍🏻

My goal is a variant of Spanish revival. That would be a style I'd love you to go over! Still popular in the southwest but hard to find in stores. White walls, dark wood, terracotta and colorful art. We have a TON of books and I am an academic, but I like it light, not dark, so light academic? 😅 White walls with colorful art and comfortable furniture. Probably some version of eclectic but with that Spanish/Mediterranean vibe.

My boyfriend and I are in the middle of re-designing the house, and the bedroom is like a mix of several of these styles! We're calling it "moody eclectic" but we went with "dark knight" by sherwin williams for the walls (super dark blue), there's a beautiful stained wood sliding barn door into the bathroom that came with the house, we've got a dark brown leather headboard, we're going to add dark velvet curtains coming down from the vaulted ceilings, a beautiful patterened cowhide rug on the floor, some luxurious looking sheets on the bed, we just bought this glamorous chandelier, and we're going to have some really eclectic, dark art on the walls. Sort of like a dark glam academia meets dark boho (leather/wood/rattan/plants) - Love that you dove into these styles!

I enjoyed this video I guess I have elements of many of these styles as I have been married for 47 years and we have had seven homes. Things change for me to match the style of the home, but certain things that I love stand the test of time. I have lived in two Victorian houses, a country ranch, a new modern build, a small town ranch, a large Craftsman ranch...in that order, and now a 1965 stone cottage. If you develop your own style you can adapt.

Our small apartment in Japan is a mixture of these different styles, and it prevents us being locked into a single style, because that’d feel constricting. It’s just me and my wife, so we can have fun with it. Our living space is a mix of mid-century industrial with my work area, plus my wife’s light academia on the other side with the couch and shelves. Our bedroom is more traditional, almost like a Parisian hotel with brass and warm neutrals. Our kitchen is a mix of farmhouse and boho with light wood, plants, art prints, etc. Always evolving and never boring!

Great video! I really love that thrifting is becoming more and more popular and your videos on that are so inspiring. I’m moving into a new house soon and I have a goal of buying everything second hand. I would love to see another “explainer” video from you talking about how you plan the interior design of a space and it would be so cool if you would challenge yourself to do a makeover with 100% second hand/thrifted items (the exception being paint and such). I think it’s really challenging to do since you need to find a couch that matches your style, fits the room and the colors and your budget. So what is the best way to go? Start with the furniture and make the paint match that? Or pick a color scheme and go thrifting with that in mind? Hope this makes sense and that you would consider a video on it.

I think the important thing is to mix and match silhouettes, and also to use the vintage pieces as more standalone statements! I.e. don't let them overpower the space, and if you have one ornate side table for instance, you might want to pair that with some more structured and 'square' type modern chairs or other sleeker straight-line furniture. Alternatively, you can keep the decor quite minimalist to balance it all out - more modern looking lighting, knobs, artwork etc. paired with vintage furniture. Also I think it helps to keep the colour palette quite neutral overall, but with accents of 'vintage' colours and shades - nothing too overly bright or overstimulating, just lots of softer, more subtle or maybe moody tones. It's fun to look at the 'heritage' paints of different companies (e.g. Farrow and Ball) to come up with ideas for colour palettes:) I think another big one is making sure that pattern is kept to a minimum, and if it's used it's quite intentional, cohesive and references the period you're going for (unlike Grand Millennial and maximalist, I think a lot of effort goes in to avoiding pattern and colour clashes so that the overall vibe is quite restful despite its eclecticism). Of course, as Drew said, it does all depend on what kind of 'vintage' you're going for (i.e. Victorian, mid-century retro, 70s, etc.) but I feel like in general you can approach it by looking at moodboard inspo pics of actual rooms from that time period, and then figure out how to tone it down. I'm not an expert by any means but I've been really into this style lately and these are the vibes I've been getting!

Granny chic? I'm looking around my living room right now and I realize there is a term for the way I decorate. I have a mix of second hand furniture and family heirlooms that looks cozy yet a little rustic. I have a slip cover, {navy blue}, on my second hand sofa and changed the covers on the pillows. I can't handle the all white homes. I need color, texture and patterns in my life! I love this video!! You have made all these 'types' of decor understandable. Thank you.

I love Tulum and the style of Tulum. It's not my style at home but I love it, cause I love the vibe in Tulum. I'm more of a Maximalism/Grand Millennial style. I've been collecting for years, now I'm trying to put it all together and make it renter friendly... Try that with gallery walls in every room. I'm also a furniture painter and painted a dresser inspired by a Monet painting Red Water Lilies. Anyway, love watching your channel.

I've never had a certain theme in my home. Having grown up a military brat, we moved around a lot. My dad was American. My mum was English. I love happy colors, yet in the fall & winter, I like things to look warner. I live the beach, Hawaii, mtns, family photos, and memorabilia. So you can probably imagine what my home looks like. I love your videos. And really liked that you said people can have more than one style. It doesn't matter what what you do, it's always perfect. ❤

OMG thank you for the knowledge and the new phrase I'm adding to my Pinterest searches. I've been trying to come up with and search for decor styles for awhile to somewhat decorate my current apartment but more so to decor my hopefully future one. My taste has varied over the years from gothic, to possibly eclectic, to glam, to romantic, and I like certain elements from them but never one entirely. I love dark colors but not as dark as a full goth, I love books and Victorian styles but not fully, I loved secretary desk and apothecary drawers but had no way to know how to combine everything into a cohesive look until now. I already looked up more dark academia pics and have found so many I love and now know exactly how I want to decorate and can incorperate all the cool and fun decor items I have saved or favorited on my design journey. Thank you so much for showing the different designs they make a great starting off point for those of us who would love to decorate but don't know what to search to get inspiration pics. I would love to see you maybe go more in depth into these like maybe places to shop and maybe how would you decorate say a living room in each of these styles. Thanks Lone Fox you live up to the smart as a fox motto.

I never knew how to describe my style to people but knowing what Vintage Revival is helps so much! I think mine is Vintage Revival with a sprinkle of Dark Academia :).

Dark Academia is basically what I lived with for decades, with my ex. He loves things DARK. Dark woods, heavy (antique, from my Aunt) furniture, and (of course) lots and lots of books. :) My current place doesn’t have much of style beyond eclectic really, though the building and my housemate’s stuff is fairly mid century modern. Mid century isn’t my favorite, since I grew up with it (literally), but it’s certainly consistent with the architecture, bathroom, and kitchen in this place. I hadn’t heard of Japandi or Danish Pastel, but they both make a lot of sense as you explain them. I agree that Danish pastel has a youthful, fun vibe. If I had a young girl I might want to do her room that way. :) My own personal favorite of the ones you listed here, I think is monochromatic. I find the monochromatic look very soothing. I think it’s impractical for me, unfortunately, as I am too eclectic to pull it off. Too many things that I wouldn’t want to get rid of! Also, my own favorite color is purple, and that’s hard to do in a monochromatic without it being completely overwhelming. Ends up looking like the Purple Store. LOL. If I could, I think I’d like to do monochromatic in blue, though, and that might lend itself to the occasional accent of purple. :) Thanks for this very interesting video! I enjoyed it a lot. :)

Wait, this is the first time I've heard of Danish Pastel. I'm aware of the aspects of the design style but didn't realize it had an actual name. I definitely like a mix of maximalism and Danish Pastel.

Well made video that really hits on the basics of current design. I'd love to see something on your channel that touches on whether or not to coordinate the architecture of your home into the design, such as, if you are dealing with an '80s era ranch style home, how do you create the mood of something like Dark Academia without a total gut and remodle.

Always take time for yourself and relax your mind. Put the phone, computer, tv away erase all the issues and problems and just Relax for a good 45 minutes in pure silence. Do it once a day and you will feel better 😁 Creative Minds are always thinking 🤔 sometimes we just have to halt it for awhile. It takes practice but once you start doing it. It will become easier. Hope your feeling better and getting more sleep. I really enjoy your interior design videos 😁 keep up the great work.
