In the corpus-based approach, researchers usually begin with a preconceived hypothesis (often based on a particular linguistic theory), and then they use a corpus to prove or disprove the hypothesis. They begin investigating a particular linguistic phenomenon in a corpus, and various hypotheses emerge as the analysis proceeds. That is, the corpus itself is the sole source of your hypotheses about language.
