Correction: Sorry for the minor shadow effect in some of the subtitles and the misspelling of "pregnancy." I guess this somehow proves my humanity haha. Thanks as always for your support! I hope you enjoyed it. Wonder how many people will read this vs. not and write about my errors in the comments?.....interesting haha. Ok, Be Hopeful!
Do you think that these 8 Reasons show that Desi Arnaz was a genius!? Let me know. Either way, you cannot deny his impact on TV and on I Love Lucy!

Desi was a true genius. What he did with and for the show was nothing short of incredible. Sometimes I don’t think he gets enough credit where he deserves it. He and Lucy were a true power team and together they made some one of the best television shows ever.

All are great accomplishments for Desi. Its amazing that all these years later there have been so few TV series with minority lead characters, much less Cuban bongo players with thick accents. Desi was definitely ahead of his time!

That's true of shows with Latino and Asian leads but you've gotta be kidding me if you're saying that there have been few series with black leads because if so how much Tv have you actually ever watched? Lol There have been ALOT of shows with black leads, heck we took over the 90's especially. However, I do believe Desi's contribution to television helped pave the way for even us black people to have such great rep on television from the 70's onward.

I love Lucy was so well written, even to this day I still enjoy watching the reruns, you could feel the love they had for having fun and making people laugh. Many of the ideas they came up with, brought smiles to our faces,as outrageous as they were, more times than not we have all gone through similar situations. Thank you Desi, Lucy, William and Vivian for touching our lives and hearts.

Listening to this gives me goose bumps. I’m glad someone is giving Desi Arnaz his dues, although the focus is on Lucille Ball in main stream media. Desi Arnaz always praised Lucille Ball in public for her contributions to the show. Desi is a true gentleman for taking the humble approach. May he, Lucy, Vivian And Will RIP.

When Lucy bought Desi out, she became head of DesiLu Studio and she green lit Impossible and Star Trek. Also, unfortunately when she took over Desilu was losing money (due to his alcoholism, he was not making good decisions which is so unfortunate as he was a business and creative genius). After a few years with Lucy as Head it was making money and Lucy sold it for 17 million dollars.

Desi Arnaz was most unique in that he was such a funny and fun-loving man, while also - and let's face it, in spite of the fact - that he was such a good businessman. Those two qualities are almost never found in the same person. And on top of this, he demonstrated true genius in his entertainment innovations. As if this was not enough, he never became a huge egotist, which is the norm today for so much of the industry. Desi was truly blessed and we are more blessed to have had him (and still have him) in our lives. While the dissolution of his marriage with Lucy was so sad (to say nothing of what led up to it), the fact that they remained very close friends until death at least shows that whatever faults he had, he was still a loving, caring, and even humble person at his core.
@peaceandlove544
@peaceandlove544 3 года назад
Agree, he had sooooo many talent and virtues: Handsome, charismatic, leadership, musical, comedic, acting, producing, tecnical unnovation, business visionary, great boss, humble, funny, fun loving, caring father, good friend and son, popular, rich, successfull, etc. Of course he did have a big flaw: unfaithfullness. He was from the old school, it's ok if they are nothing serious and you love your wife and provide for her and keep it to your self, are discreat and not with anyone close to her. But Lucy said I cannot live without him but with him either so she got a divorce and he really suffer so bad that he lost his interest in everything and even ended up selling his share at DesiLu to Lucy and retired fully from.showbusiness and move to his beautiful beach home mansion in Mexico and from then on he lived on his yatch and on his Mexico beach house or his Malibu beach home. Alternaiting. There should be a biopic about Desi
@LJ-ht4zs

I agree with all the positives about Desi Arnaz. He was an addict: sexual addictions (not just affairs), gambling, and booze. He was volatile when drunk - which became more and more frequent and earlier and earlier would start at 10am in the am.

My favorite Lucy episode is the one where Lucy tells Ricky she's expecting, and tells him at the club. When they start dancing and he sings to her, those tears are real on Lucy's face. It was not acting, both got very emotional and it was real.

My 4 Favorites are Lucy tells Ricky she is pregnant at the club; Cuban Pete & Sally Sweet (probably #1), When the Lucy tells Ricky and the Mertz's It's Time; Lucy dances with Van Johnson. I particularly like when the b/w turns into a colorized version in the middle. One can see how beautiful and talented Lucy is and one feels her delight as well as Van Johnson's, et al.

That is also a favorite show of mine - also, Desi had flubbed a line when singing Rock-a-bye and they were going to do the end again; the audience said No! It was so emotional and Lucy's tears were real - they left it as is.

I think Desi was underrated in his lifetime. However anyone who is interested in I Love Lucy knows about Desi's amazing contributions to tv. I was six years old when it first came out and now aged 76 - never get tired of this show. Lifts my spirits esp. during this covid time. Also again when Lucy took over Desilu - it was losing money - She green lit programs that CBS and sponsors felt were too expensive - (Star Trek and Mission Impossible) but she green lit them anyway. After a few years the company was making money and Lucy sold to Paramount for 17 million. So her having to be tough worked well for her and for the company - both made out well.

I feel like, as an audience member at home, the show is even more funny to watch when hearing a genuine reaction from the studio audience. But while watching this list, I realized just how important each of his decisions was, especially combined. Good call, Marion! If Desi had anything close to a "me-me-me" personality, he would've plowed forward trying to be the one getting all the laughs! Another genius move to realize his value as the "straight man" for Lucy's hijinx! Similar to "The Andy Griffith Show"---it only took Andy an ep or two to realize it'd be futile for him to keep digging for laughs. He quickly handed all the comedy heavy lifting to Don Knotts, and the rest is hilarious history!!

Many of the ideas that Desi Arnaz developed for television are still being used today- almost 70 years later! And, don't forget, he was also a trailblazer for Hispanic talent in television! Without him, performers of the past and present like Freddie Prinze, Sr., Rita Moreno, Paul Rodriguez, Gregory Sierra, America Ferrera, Ricardo Montalban, George Lopez, Edward James Olmos, Gina Rodriguez, Sophia Vergara, Salma Hayek, and others might have had a harder time getting into television.

Another wise decision on Desi's part. I have a 9th "Genius Desi" point, Rick! CBS initially hated Desi's singing, and ordered him to not sing unless it was integral to the script. Well, of course, Desi consorted with the writers (I'm guessing) to ensure there'd be plenty of story arc-worthy singing moments! Of course, once "ILL" proved its value to the network (ratings, ad fees, etc), there's no way CBS could or would stand, anymore, in Desi's/Ricky's way. BABA-LOOOOOO!

Good show, Rick! Desi was the brains behind the business and technical end of "I Love Lucy" and the beginnings of Desilu. No doubt about it. I think the three camera set-up and keeping the rights to "I Love Lucy" in leu of a big salary up front were the two most brilliant things Desi did. Of course, all the other points you bring up were right up there in importance. It was mentioned below that Jess Oppenheimer was the brains behind "I Love Lucy." I think his outstanding contribution came in supervising the storylines of the episodes, not in the areas that Desi contributed to. I'm not sure when he left, but I think it was just after the European Trip episodes. The plots of the episodes, for the most part, dropped in comedic substance once Oppenheimer was gone.

God, Rick, I just love your positivity and optimism! Which is what I preach on Facebook and in life. I am looking at some of your episodes before I discovered you, and here's one from four years ago about the genius of Desi Arnaz. As you said on the video, some of these overlap but I would argue that a 9th one for this list would be that Arnez basically created the form of the TV sitcom. As a matter of fact, I can remember Rob Reiner and others at Emmys over the years that have given Desi Arnaz thanks for the form. I think it's a legit statement. This isn't a variety show with skits or a continuing drama, it's a sitcom and the modern TV sitcom was indeed created by Desi Arnaz, I would say. Thanks for all this information entertainment. Today, I wish you would continue to emphasize that we need to be positive and hopeful. Thanks so much!

I honestly feel, that Desi could have been nominated for an Emmy if the era of that time was not racially biased.

For starters, spanish speaking people are not part of an actual race. Hispanic (or Latino) is not an actual race. It's a made up race for political purposes.

@@carlsagan2299 Interesting. I was referencing the prejudices of the time, like the one that moved Lucy and Desi to have to travel to promote the show since execs weren’t too thrilled that a mixed couple sitcom would be a hit.

Although owning the films is important, I feel filming on 35 millimeter film has to be the best idea he had. That's why these shows are shown still today. Yu can see the difference in the really early shows done on kinescope.

I think that the most influential thing that Desi Arnaz has done out of these eight things is the Rerun. That was totally genius! If it wasn't for the rerun, we would not have been able to see "I Love Lucy." Or "Leave it to Beaver," or "The Lucy Show" or "Hazel," or anything. Imagine not ever having seen "I Love Lucy." That would be sad.

I enjoy watching your videos. I think I Love Lucy is probably my all time favorite television program. If I'm channel surfing and I come across an I Love Lucy episode, I almost always stop and watch it. It doesn't take more than a couple of lines to figure out which episode it is. I wonder why they didn't capitalize the "L" in DesiLu? The Lu stood for Lucy. It looks like they would've capitalized it, being that Lucy is a proper noun and proper nouns are capitalized, even if they are abbreviated.

Happy that Desi is getting the credit at last for much of the credit in I Love Lucy. There was an awful program where a "friend" of Lucys, who wrote a book called, "Lucy Loves Me", said how Desi was" such a creep" I never have heard of this woman's name, or saw her pal around with Lucy. Actress Carole Cook, who I always admired, adored both Lucy and Desi. She is the one who truly knows the truth.

When I have heard Carole Cook on video talking - she feels creepy to me. I feel that she was jealous of Lucy. (I think she was a young up and comer who was mentored by Lucy - but there is something seeping through when I hear her talk. Not very attractive and not very talented either. When you hear Carol Burnett talk about Lucille Ball I feel her love and appreciation for Lucy and for their relationship. Both appeared on each other's shows and radiated respect and love. When I hear Cook speak I immediately have to skip over what she is saying. There is a icky feeling that comes thru (to me).

Doing the show without a laugh track ! That was a SMART but risky move but Desi stuck to his guns and did it. I never realized how much he did for the show. I just hate it how he was to Lucy in real life but they did love each other to the end of time for them , even tho they got married to other people.

Yes, there was no laugh track and it was filmed before a live audience. Both Lucy’s and Desi’s mothers (along with other family members) were at every filming. -- I don’t know which episode it was, but I believe in the first season, Lucy was about to be caught in something and there’s a very loud, “Ut-Oh!” heard from the audience. This was Lucy’s mother. -- That “Ut-Oh!” was so successful, that it was reused and edited into 3-4 other episodes over the series. Not a laugh track, but a single example of a post-production audience response being used.

Desi was a man of quality. I think that was his genius, and it came out in the show and his business decisions. I just wish he and Lucy had been able to save their marriage. It must have come as a real shock to the public when they parted, because they were such a beautiful match as the Ricardos.

Since Desi Arnaz came from a business oriented family he was able to incorporate that knowledge to having Desilu studio and empire. After all let’s not forget that his family member was co owner of the Bicardi Rum empire in Cuba. So his dna creativity was in the works.

Hey Rick: it's true that Desi Arnaz never got the full credit and accolades that he deserved in launching and sustaining "I love Lucy" and Desilu. But I hope everyone remembers that he did borrow from radio. Many Radio programs (Jack Benny, etc.) had a live orchestra or band and were recorded (on vinyl recordings?) in front of a live audience. Radio was the entertainment medium in the home so I would observe that Desi Arnaz borrowed from radio and was able to successfully transfer some production aspects over to a television show. And didn't he do it in front of a live audience because he knew Lucille Ball performed better live ... Evidence of that is in her radio program, "My Favorite Husband." I wouldn't say that Desi Arnaz was necessarily a genius for filming in front of a Live audience and not using a laugh track. But another great video from you, Rick!! I love the still photographs. You can see the great talent in Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley.
