Thanks for a straight to the point Video… The only one that I didn’t hear you mention is cleaning/ washing down the outside coils that can become extremely dirty in clogged especially for anyone who stirs up a lot of dirt, dust & grass particles when mowing around it on a weekly basis!!😏😉… Which will also cause it to over work the unit & drive up your electric bill😏😉… As will some filters that tout extreme filtering, Etc…. Thanks Again!!🙏😃
1 of my pipes in the basement froze up. I shut the A/C Hvac off, I change the filter, kept it off all night. Should I start it back up to see if that did the trick? 🥺😱
Why do you not want to be called out? You can charge for the service right? This is the problem, There are just not enough HVAC people, and so it is like pulling teeth to get a service person out even though they can charge to same hourly rate as a lawyer!
This was an incredibly helpful video and one of the many reasons that RU-vid is such a great resource for DIYers. I'm still not sure exactly why my AC was freezing up but in a 9 minute video I came to learn an incredible amount about how HVAC systems work as a whole, and was able to explore many of the potential faults you listed with my own system to probe them for problems.
Imagine 3 years later RU-vid is still the shizit for having guys like this to lead us throughout our trying times.. It's a WIN seeing how the majority of us cannot afford to have the pros come and do it!! THANK YOU YT and this sweet man that's giving us the skinny!!
Great video! I used these 8 reasons yesterday and it was the capacitor on the blower motor. Quick fix!. This was a neighbors house [younger couple]. I asked have they changed the filter[s]. They replied, "What are filters". They had 2 return air ducts. Oooooo baby! Those filters were in there for years! Thank you so much.
His dad across the street a/c down same day. I found loose wire. Furnace repair last winter and repairman didn't connect wire. Works great! day@@WordofAdviceTV
this guy really helped a lot of practitioners/technical guys in solving issues that are commonly encountered by normal users of AC regardless of manufacturers or make of the unit....
Ours froze for 2 reasons, first we were leaving the back door open for our cat to come in and out and the humidity was to high. Second we set the temperature way to low at night. Thanks for the Video!
Let me add two other reasons for system freezing 1. If there is a zone system and one of the damper is not working. 2. If the wireless thermostat is low on batteries the wireless communication will cut of then system will freeze up. Enjoyed watching your video Keep it up
First time with AC issues as a new homeowner-I found this video unbelievably helpful. Very well explained and now I have a basic understanding of how my AC works. Thank you sir!
The only things that can possibly make a system freeze is either A) an airflow issue or B) low on refrigerant. he did a fantastic job at going into specific reasons of each, but just a rule of thumb to help remember is that the cause of it freezing will always come down to one of those 2 reason
You are definitely awesome. Thank you so very much. You made it simple, concise and an excellent explanation. He also gave hope it is much appreciated. God bless you.
Thank you, thank you!! My ac condensor and lines outside are solid white ice, and no AC in the house. I reset the circuit breaker and the ice melted and now have cold air coming out of registers. I will inspect my 18-year old A coil for dirt. My filter was new and I change filters regularly. You were very informative in your video.
Love this guy, right to the point! I've had 2 companies out in the last 2 weeks. None of them helped, they just said we need a new unit! My wife's been telling me that for years!;) Anyway, a new low restriction filter and a good cleaning of the coils and the problem is fixed! Thanks!!!
These videos are some of the best in explaining hvac systems. I consider you one of the best instructors on RU-vid videos in this industry. I'm aspiring to be a technician in the industry and before I start classes I wanted to get a better understanding so I don't get intimidated by the technical terminology, your videos are really helping to break it down for me. Thank you. You are one of the few people to get a like and subscription from me. 👍
I'm happy to hear the video was able to earn a like and subscribe! :) You will definitely be ahead of the pack if you are actually taking the time to self-study! I wish I did that before/during hvac school. But then again I don't think there was much hvac content on RU-vid back then.. (6 years ago)
When my evap "A"coil iced up, I removed the access panel, used my wife's hairdryer, set it to "low" heat; it took about an hour to thaw it out. Great video!!
Time is the best option, you can get to the outside of the A shape of the coils but if don't remove the center cover and get up between them you'll still have ice inside, which is where air flow starts. Ice remaining inside will likely cause it to ice again because air flow is still a problem.
All you have to do is.Turn the AC off and just turn the fan on.the heat from the air in the air in the house will melt the ice naturally...once the ice is all gone,Make sure your filter is clean if it wasn't and turn your unit back on.If it runs fine,Then it is alright...but if it starts to freeze back up call a service tech..
This is the first video I've seen that the person sounds knowledgeable, while I question the freezing up due to thermostat being set to low the other 7 points are accurate but I guess it could happen with lack of airflow over extended time but if the system is correct it shouldn't, but I guess that part of the point anyway. Just wanted to say thanks for at least one person on utube that knows what they are talking about . Sometimes I feel like I am the only one that knows what there doing in the industry so it was refreshing to see someone with some knowledge out there giving true information
A property I manage just had this problem. Great video for the homeowner to watch. I forwarded the link to them. There's no sense having a technician come out until the system is no longer iced up.
Excellent information. Mine turned out to be a fouled (dirty) evap coil. I had to cut a "window" in the side and use a shop vac with a brush extension. Ran to the local HVAC shop and they sheared a piece of scrap to 1" oversized in both directions in the measurement of the "window". They were nice enough to give me some self tapping sheet metal screws. Pre-drilled holes in the cover, used those as a guide to drill the holes in the plenum with the self tappers and dry fit the cover. The next part is going a little overboard, but I drew a line around the new cover (using it as a guide), removed the cover, smeared a little grease on the plenum only from the drawn line, in. Put a bead of silicone 1/4" in of the parameter of the cover, set it to the side for an hour while I poured myself a bourbon and watched some videos on the tube of the yous. Then, reinstalled the cover just enough to slightly compress the silicone bead. This system is only 5 years old so I'm sure I'll be the one removing the cover again. If not, I left instructions on the side of the plenum for the next guy, or gal.
Excellent, thank you. Two additional reasons: the outside AC Fins may be dirty. Take the time to spray them with a good non-corrosive cleaner, let that sit for 5-10 minutes, the hose off with a brisk spray that won’t damage the fins. Done twice a year, beginning & end of season may help. Regular maintenance is worth the effort to save you lots of $$$$. Also, when was the last time your entire house Duct work was cleaned out? It’s amazing what & how much “stuff” accumulates within them.
Great job.. well done 👍🏻 In addition I would add : - Thermostat failure causing compressor never shutting off . - Setting temperature very low while setting blower speed too low at the same time . - Too high humidity, while temperature is set too low .
I never leave comments but felt you should know that this was a great video. To the point and detailed. It’s appreciated. Now let’s see if I can fix my issue lol
I've gotten a chance to watch a number of your videos since coming across your channel. Please accept my sincerest thanks for all that you've taught me. I love RU-vid and it's YTers like you that make this site so fantastic.
Thank you very much! This helps a lot! Our AC unit froze up 4 times in the last month. We called Reliance Home and Comfort and they sent 4 different guys to look at it. They all said nothing was wrong with the unit and to just keep the vents open. Each time it freezes, my wife, our 2 month old son and I sleep in the basement because we need to keep him cool. I'm hoping we can figure out what is going on and get it fixed. Thanks again, we really appreciate it. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Sounds like it's time to find another AC tech company! I had the same problem at work on a unit. Was using the same company for years with bad results. Finally called out another company, they looked up the information of the condenser, the evaporator and the air handler. Said all three were mismatched and could never perform right. They gave me a really good quote to replace the needed units. Worked flawlessly there after! I never looked back! Sometimes these so called professionals are self-taught.
Thank you so much! Was having a problem with the line freezing. Checked the filter, because we have been doing painting, sanding, and generally moving things around. The filter was white and hardly no air was getting through! Just ran to the store and replaced the filter. While I was gone, I took the VERY dirty, filter out and My house already had cooled 4 degrees in the 15 minutes I was gone. We even have a thermostat that reminds you when to change the filter, so I didn't even think of it. Again, thank you so much!
Thank you for the video I live in San Antonio Texas and the unit froze, shut off and started cleaning the return vents, replaced filter and kept the fan running on the unit. It's midnight and hot so will clean the evaporator coils later in the morning. The landlord is a certified retired ac tech and old so I help him with all the maintenance plumbing, electric plugs and so on. If after cleaning the coils and still freezing I'll get him to freon the unit 🤞🏼, thank you again. Peace out ✌🏽👍🏼👍🏼
After cleaning the evaporater coils and outside unit the central air is blowing cold air and had to adjust thermostat it was at 75° but the temp inside was reading 70°, I really appreciate the video and thank you again for the assistance 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you. I just changed my filter not long ago and it was already plugged. Changed it again let it sit and melt with the fan on and I’m back in business. Thank goodness
Better explained, Lack of air flow or some sort of air restriction causes a drop of evaporator temperature. Also, the refrigerant absorbs the heat out of the air in the home. You said it backwards. Awesome you took the time to explain to everyone, thx. Ps. look up vapor saturation temperature and what superheat actually means.
Very useful video. My outside condenser fan was buzzing but never starting. Replaced the capacitor outside and it started to run. Next day I noticed it iced up outside on the condenser. Went to the attic and checked the blower motor. It is a little cumbersome check. However the motor was "just hot" to touch. Changed the thermostat to Heat and cranked up the temperature. The blower motor did not come up even when the furnace lit up. Switched the power off to furnace. Replaced the blower capacitor. Switched the power on. This time the furnace and blower motor both came on. Changed the thermostat back to Cool. Works now. No more icing. Changing the motor will be a lot more difficult task.
Going to HVAC school and I watch your videos to get a further understanding and different perspective from what I’m being taught. Your videos are awesome and very informative. Thanks!
Thanks brotha! From Los angeles california!!! You’re the man! Thank you for your videos, when ever i am in a pinch 🤏 i always find the answer to my problems through your teachings! Thank you once again! And keep the videos coming!
Went through these videos and was able to diagnose that the capacitor on the air handler blower fan was the issue. Watched this video and the one about blower fans not working and save $300. Great video!
2:30 thank you for actually varifying this information, I was not able to verify by searching "short shot ac unit, more room for expansion" and stuff along the lines of that. Nice info too!
thanks! being a girl, who knows zero about this, your info has been super informative; to-the-point, and VERY HELPFUL! thank you!!!!! only regret, I wish you were in my area so I could call YOU to fix my A/C btw, just because this was so awesome, I subscribed, liked, and shared!
My air conditioning is leaking water 😱 fix that . Now have a slight leak coming from the other side of my air conditioning unit the seam . My air conditioner has only been running for about eight hours I’m shutting it off putting on air mode to melt the ice just in case before it gets worse since there was a clog in the drainage hose . I don’t see any ice on the outside I’m taking this as a precaution since I cleaned out the hose that was clogged where water could not leave the unit ( it’s 90° out tonight it’s going to be tough we’re not open the windows we’re just running the Fresh air mode to melt the ice due to the humidity outside wish us luck👍🤣 You did amazing job I’m subscribing Single mom raising my son on my own things get tough. Yet people like you keep us going💝👍🎉
Great job of covering the points and why And what Not to Do . I’m a DIY guy . I had a coil replaced after 10 years of having a slow leak ever since the system was installed in my new home. The person who sold it and did the install would come and check it and said there was no leaks found but the system was low on Freon . I have a propane heat split system . 30 ft of copper lines ! Which were all exposed in my basement rafters ! and I’ve replaced my motor run capacitor before. Later the condenser motor!
Thank you bro ,for this video .my heat pump type air conditioner was not working .the fereon gas copper pipe was covered with ice ,and I had house full of guests, then i went on line ,read your 8 reasons of this trouble, .The first one worked out ."the filter was full of dust .here I will tell you something I tried to cheat ,as an experiment. I cleaned the old filter vey well out side of house .For me it was 90 % clean , but didnot worked for a week. .This ice accumulation was first time in 8 years. .I think evaporato was not wokin enough as the air was not sufficient to defrost . i usullay change filter within 2-3 months . I am in Toronto. After replacing a new filter I stoped the cooling system and run the fan only for two hours. All snow melted . Thanks God guests didn't compained much. Thanks 😃 😃
LOVE IT!! Straight to the point and you taught me many other reasons why a unit will ice up!! I just knew about the defrost, and sensor, low on r22 or whatever they're using now.. Persolanny I think this york heat pump is a pos. It's not completely freezing up but the condenser gets very frosted up. got the def set at every 1hr which is in the middle. when it gets really frosty I'll go out there and trip the defrost tester to make it defrost. however, it's defrosting every hour. I think it's low on refridgerant. the temp outside is 36 and it's frosted up.
Jay, Dealing w/the Texas heat already. Several days ago I found your Excellent site and followed some of your steps: 1) Changed Filter {It was good as I have a sensor to tell me when to change}, 2) Cleaned the external casing of the HVAC unit, 3) Replaced my condenser (Thanks for the tip on discharging prior to shocking)...Anyway, the inside thermostat temp was set at 72 and outside was 100. The home temp rose to 89. Yesterday I had an AC company come out; concluded I had a slight leak in my internal coil (he fixed by turning 1/4 turn to tight) and put 3 lbs of 990 or 930 (I could be wrong about the number). The home temp over the next five hours dropped to 74 and stayed there. Never hit 72, never shut off..8 1/2 hours later the temp was up to 77 and I checked the outside line...Frozen up to the compressor. I turned of the system...any Ideals?
Did either of you determine the cause? I have a similar issue. For example: if I keep the thermostat on 72, the A/C runs for hours non-stop trying to keep the temp down but on a ~90 deg. day it can only keep down to ~77-78 midday and will lower a degree or so per hour when the sun goes down until finally reaching 72 in the nighttime. Same cycle everyday for weeks now. I cleaned filter, cleaned outside coils, cleaned A-coil, replaced outside fan, new thermostats and no duct leaks. Good flow from vents too. I’m stumped?! What was your outcome? Thx in advance!
Also a side note, I spray my outside unit once a month with the hose to wash off any dirt/tree leaves that collect on it, this makes the unit run less and my inside air much cooler.
@@cpp1390 I was told to do that by my service guy when I called him because it wasn't making enough cool air, he sprayed it for 10 minutes and it was fine. Cost me $150.00 for his advice but I never had that problem again. Have to keep the fins clean and get all the dirt off.
@@jlc7300 thank you. I am really glad I saw your message, I was told by a couple of AC companies not to do that. Probably just there way to make more money in hopes your unit breaks I’m sure. They literally told me it could fry the unit because the water gets in all the wiring, some BS thing about the wires through the AC and the coils and getting electrocuted. So I never messed with it. I always questioned it but never really thought to look it up & check for sure until I ran into my current issue & saw your comment.
@@cpp1390 Just don't spray from the top down, only on the sides, I spray mine while it's running, water won't hurt it, the poor unit is out in the weather all year.
As an hvac technician I congrat you for the good explanation. Gonna add two more causes to make it 10, however, this are less common. 9: Obstructed filter drier. Usually found couple inches from the condenser in the discharge line (smaller copper pipe). You will notice it sweating usually one end will be hotter than the other . 10: Stuck magnetic contactor on the condenser. You can easily check this buy turning off your system on the thermostat and the condenser outside will continue working. Sorry for the long comment... peace👍
Will this cause thermostat to keep running after it hits target temperature? It seems to cause the line to sweat and freeze outside of house. Fan, blower, etc are working
@@sgtmadre5103 yes, stuck magnetic contactor in the condenser will keep the compressor running, however, air handler unit blower motor is gonna turn off if the thermostat reached set temperature, make sure your thermostat is set to fan auto and not fan on so you can accurately determine where the problem is.
Thanks for share . I install a 4 ton unit but is freze maybe a extra return grill or debris on the piston. First time but you learn something all the time.
Same way that u clean the condenser coil. Accessing the A-coil is the biggest challenge. That and you probably will need to use compressed air (or a shop vac or leaf blower) instead of water.
I love it! I just got my two big units fixed (new house that we are fixing up), so I watched Roberto do it and felt comfortable troubleshooting an AC unit. Your video was so helpful I confirmed the blower fan motor in the furnace was ok. I knew the freon level was okay and so discovered my filter was dirty dirty dirty. I had sanded the floors before we moved in and this was the only unit working, the smallest, oldest 2002 Trane for one large room. Must be the circuit board then.. it is so old I couldn't find a diagram of the circuit, so wasn't sure which two wires to connect. Ordered a new part, but in the meantime I just moved the blower motor fan with my hand to spin it. Once it started spinning the AC kicked on and blew cold. I have to do it after it shuts off each time but until my control panel comes in; in works!!
Hey Ronnie! Glad to hear the videos are helpful! It's good that the unit is working for now but from what you described, it sounds like a dead/weak blower motor capacitor, not a bad control board. Just thought I would give you a heads up. Stay cool!
Mostly likely cause why your AC is freezing up: (1) Low on gas (2) Not enough air flow due to dirty air filter or failed fan (2) is easy to check; (1) needs pressure test (almost certain if your AC is old)
Thanks for good info. Also a restricted filter drier. After the unit has been running a while measure the temperature on both sides of it - should be the same. If more than (2 degrees? - I don't really know ) it needs replacing.
Is this the same situation when using the heat ? My compressor froze up a bit out side. I live in Texas and we have humidity issues and we suddenly got a freeze overnight with wind.
Great video, clear narrative and visual presentation. Thank you for not spending the first five minutes boasting about your a abilities, you demonstrated your abilities just fine. Thank you for the video
Thanks. Your videos have been helpful and you do a good job explaining in a simple way. Can you make a video explaining the difference of max amperage and inrush amperage. My meter only reads inrush amperage and my buddies reads max amperage. Inrush is always higher. It confuses me because sometimes my inrush exceeds the LRA.
My Unit just froze up. The compressor was replaced yesterday and was converted from R22 to 407c. Nothing else was changed. I read where other parts are required if the freon swap?
I came home last night to a hot house and yes the A-coil was froze. I de thawed it over night and this morning the air started freezing again after about 35 minutes. Everything checked fine inside and out but by expansion valve is making a hissing noise. Is this normal? I’m guessing I may have low Freon, but it went somewhere. The unit is a Trane XR11 and 20 years old. Great video and priceless channel. 😎🤘
One more reason to add: the magnetic switch that turns the outside compressor on, gets stuck in the "on" position. So when the inside fan turns off, it is still on outside, freezng pipes all the way to condensor. Had to replace this switch. Not sure what was causing it to stick, and was a pain to diagnose.
