In this weeks video on my journey into building my dream 8 rotor engine and fitting it into my Tesla model s I look at the 4 best rotary billet plates on the market. In this video I look at billet plate inserts and also coating billet plates cooling setups bearing setups and the time it will take for assembly which is also a factor being 8 rotors.
There are so many factors to make this happen and after going through all the plates I am another step closer. Next video I am headed over to New Zealand where the first 4 and 6 e shaft was produced to my knowledge.

I found it hard to choose which one to pick back at the start of the year and ended up going with the billetpro stuff so nice to see the comparison there. I cant be biased until ive tried them all so might try the pac stuff if a quad rotor project ever happens cause they look f***n solid.

It is very interesting to see the different plates together and listen to someone who builds the motors. Kinda would of thought the manufacturers would be falling over each other to get feedback on improving their product from assemblers. Love watching your stuff, off to the land of the long loud brap, would be keen to see some of their engine builders and eshaft manufacturers. Did you win xlotto, I can't imagine what an 8 rotor build would cost.

Nikasil - Nickel Silicon Carbide was developed and trademarked by Mahle in the late 60's and was developed in conjunction Daimlar-Benz when they were trying to make the NSU work. They were coating the rotor housings not the plates. Nikasil, or variations of, is form of electroplating and is most common in motorbike bores. High end car companies will also direct plating on alloy block bore rather than sleeving. It can even be using on alloy flywheels as the clutch surface. The main reason no one is producing rotor housings for general consumption is cost and because the coating is only as good as what it's applied to. I promise Mahle and Daimler-Benz spent more in the 60's trying to make coating live than anyone currently. The Mazda housings work because of the cast in insert in the housing and scales of production. The insert is far better at maintaining its shape than a plated alloy housing will ever be. A rotor housing has numerous problems to deal with. In a epitrochoid rotation. High % of cooling area used for through bolts. Flow through issues due to inlet and exhaust ports. The amount area needed to drain the oil out of the rotors back to the sump. As for the running surface the Intake lacks lubrication = higher wear. The combustion area is dealing with pressure and heat = distortion = low cracked spark plug holes. Exhaust blow down is high load high heat low lubrication = highest surface wear. Plates do it easy because it's only rotational sliding force to deal with. As for which plates to use the decision should be based on intended use and the fuel being used. A solid coated plate has far less cooling capacity (the rotarys major issue) relying even more on the oil system. This could be slightly offset by using alcohol and less time spent under high load like drag cars and cruisers. An inserted plate should outperform standard irons in all applications. As for billet life problems like dipsticks and oil fillers... if you've got billet housing money you should also have dry sump money. Given the sump capacity the tank won't need to be that big and would fit the left side of engine bay of road cars

8 rotor Ash of course it's possible, but think as one piece..how long the E shaft is to be machined, of course a couple carriers àlong the way for support and to help stop flex..also the timing.. well they managed the 6..so I suppose they be able to..

I got a wide body FC (no fibreglass fenders all metal +45 and fit like factory) with a fair few body modifications (rear is +70 but pumped and fuel filler and flap to look factory), it's running a stock brand new Series 8 FD block 1 of the last 10 Mazda built). It won't be a mega HP build but will be a nice streetable car? ..... if I keep it and finish it? Best of luck with everything man I hope you get your Tesla 8 rotary before going to the US! Great discussion though my only criticism is that you place the logo right where you frame the object under discussion. Move it off to the side or change the position from left to right periodically to discourage people from copying your videos. Placing the logo right in the middle is just a pain in the arse.

Awesome content bro, i wonder why no one has made a 13b center plate the size of the 20b thick plate with two massive side exit ports rather than the one small one big port? surely would pump a lot more air than the two thin ports of the 13b center plate.
