8 Self-Defeating Thoughts that Wreak Havoc

I want to help you identify automatic thoughts that you have that can affect how you feel about yourself and others. We call these cognitive distortions. We all have them to some degree. The more you have and the more rigidly you stick to them, the more havoc they wreak in your life.
Here are 8 common cognitive distortions.
The first cognitive distortion is filtering. Filtering is when you focus on the negative to the exclusion of the positive.
Black and White Thinking
Here is where you think things are all good or all bad. And you can’t see the middle grey area. This is very inflexible thinking.
Overgeneralization
With this thinking you exaggerate or take things to the extreme.
Mind reading
With mind reading, you make assumptions about what’s going to happen or you make assumptions about what something thinks.
Emotional Reasoning
This is when you believe your emotions are based in the truth. But emotions are not fact. They are your response to the facts.
Should statements
With this you overfocus on how things should be. You use words like should, ought to and must. This creates unrealistic expectations and ultimately leads to disappointment, resentment and failure.
Catastrophizing
Catastrophizing involves expecting the worst case scenario for any given situation. This is a common distortion used with people who have health anxiety or panic attacks.
Personalization.
With this you think everything is about you.
Do you recognize any of these in yourself? I’ll have a follow up video on how to challenge these thoughts. For now mull these over and think about which ones apply to you so you’ll be ready to address them in the next video.

Also Dr. Mark's, I am happy to report that I have finally reached out to my doctor and gotten help for my depression. I knew I needed the help but had a hard time understanding it and wondering if I should bother trying medication for it. I am already being treated for the anxiety but could still feel the effects of the depression. Watching your videos helped me understand things better and gave me the confidence to reach out for help. Dr.Marks, you’re the best! I drew a labeled diagram of the 8 Cognitive Distortions and hung it in my room so that I’m more cognizant of these negative thought patterns! For example, if I’m feeling symptoms of panic from agoraphobia, I’ll know it’s simply that the “catastrophizing” and “overgeneralization” distortions are in play. Being more aware of what’s happening in my brain really allows me to feel more in control. Thank you and I look forward to your next video!

I’m almost 55 and have thought this way my whole life. I learned it from my mom. She took anything and turned it into the worst possible thing. Like she would have panic attacks when I was a child or gas and say she was dying and where to find her bank book. Now I do this. If my child is sick = cancer or if my husband is late coming home= he’s cheating. I hate living this way. I had a therapist tell me it’s anxious thoughts but that’s it. I don’t think I can ever stop thinking this way. I hate being like this. Now with menopause I have panic attacks over my catastrophe thoughts.

Oh wow!!! I just love Dr. Mark’s Videos. They are straight to the point, and easy to understand. The way she delivers her message is phenomenal and inspiring... I wish I can study medicine and help people like she does... she has a gift of knowledge and communication. Very few people has this sort gift. What really inspires me about her how despite being blessed those gifts she seems to be a very down to earth and humble lady...Usuall I have experienced many physicians to be very pompous and arrogant when they consult their patients... at the same time My Doctor is very much like her...

Over generalization, emotional reasoning, mind reading. I always assume what people think based off of how they act towards me. I am a highly sensitive person so maybe that has something to do with it. I think it may also have to do with a lot of PTSD from past relationships of someone lying, or being deceitful so I try to catch it before it happens. Looking forward to the next video and how to address them! Thank you Dr. Tracey

I am so glad that you mentioned that “emotions are not facts.” I have such issue with the idea that all feelings are valid. People have a tendency to project so much of their trauma unto the facts of a situation and then react to that trauma instead of the objective reality. Then, they are enabled by society by being told that their feelings are “valid.” I really think that is one of the main issues with the world today.
@birdtopaz5627
@birdtopaz5627 3 года назад
Emotions are always valid insofar as 1) they have the right to exist and 2) they are frequently intuitive clues to things in the outside world that your conscious mind does not have immediate access to, i.e. an inexplicale rise of heart-pounding fear at high noon as you're walking into a convenenience store for some reason--and you are NOT prone to panic attacks! I have had sudden intuitions like that about people, places, and things, and ***believe me,*** they are lifesavers! My biggest mistakes in life were not listening to my intuitions signaled by emotions. Emotions are NOT, however, valid as facts. An emotion, at best, should be considered a tipoff that "something's great," "something's up," or "something's wrong"--a motivating springboard for investigating or observing a person, place, thing, or self! It can NEVER take the place of hard, logical, fact-based decisionmaking, EVER. I have also discovered that these "functional emotions," i.e. intuitions, are generally subtle and low-key, unless it's signalizing threats. They can be hard to pay attention to, as they're frequently subtle, except in extreme cases involving immediate survival--such as the convenience store example I provided earlier. A highly emotional, traumatized person in fact (I think) generally can't take advantage of the subtle but real signaling that the intuitive emotions can give. Ever notice how the highly traumatized act dingy, always stepping into bad situations? IMHO, that's why.

Wow, Dr. Marks, you've got my number! I need to get back to therapy; I see I've fallen back into my old habits of this kind of thinking! I also know, now that I'm reminded about this, that I can start employing CBT in being more aware of my self-talk! Thank you again! God bless you! 💜🙋‍♀️👍👌

Good for you for getting therapy and learning some of this already. 😊 It is easy to fall back into old habits though and it’s good to have a refresher. Thanks for watching.

Good morning doctor Tracy! I think I needed to hear this because I am facing a problem at this time. Several years ago I was on a plane that almost went down. It didn't, but I was so traumatized that I will never get on a plane again! I've suffered with panic attacks all my life and in fact have been on medicine for them all my life. It was hard for me to get on the plane and when that happened, it was very terrifying! Okay oh, so this is my problem. 2 months ago I had to go to a dentist 2 get a new set of dentures. I've had my top dentures for 15 years but my bottom teeth on my own. When I went into the clinic the waiting room was very nice and very comfortable, however when I had to go bat to where they do all the dental work I was led down a hallway that was the shape of a maze which unnerved me and I was noticing a lot of stainless steel which I associate with a plane. It seemed we were walking for an hour until we got to this little room which literally look like a tiny cockpit of an airplane and I began to tremble but I managed to get through the process of the dentist taking impressions of the top of my mouth for the new dentures. I thought that would be all and then I would go back and get my new dentures, however it didn't turn out so well so the doctor tells me to come back the following week. Long story short---

Very insightful, I do most of these. This video helps to see my thought processes much clearer. I'm going to reference it when I'm on one of my self loathing tours. 🖤 Thanks!

I read a similar article on the Art of Manliness and was still a little confused; this helped clear it up. I am certainly guilt of a fair number of them. Thousand thank yous for cautioning people not to place total trust in feelings! They can be just as faulty as any of our physical systems. I consider prejudice to be an example of wrongly trusting your gut.
