I'd love to know what episodes you think fundamentally changed the series that we don't really talk about in those terms.

'The Web of Fear' and 'The Invasion' are two episodes which I believe fundamentally changed Doctor Who. Without those episodes, UNIT wouldn't have become a reality. The Third Doctor's run also would have suffered from the lack of action and a setback in the development of the Doctor's 'Hero of Earth' aspect. Excellent video by the way!

Yes, those are really good calls! I always forget the early Unit stories; which is a shame really, because they’re very good. I didn’t get to see The Invasion or Web of Fear for quite some time after I started collecting videos, so I always think of Spearhead as the first Unit story. But there’s a lot to like about both of those stories. I’ll have to take a deeper look at them. Really glad you liked the video 😊

Morbious is a good shout, actually. It nearly made the list of honourable mentions, but people are aware enough of the story and its impact that it didn’t seem to sit quite right with the subject.

Excellent video as ever, although I don't consider Black Orchid a "pure historical", as the point of historicals (whether pure or pseudo) is that they referred to actual people/events, so the audience could learn at least something about history. However, not only are the people and events in Black Orchid entirely made up, so is the location! For me, "Orchid" is just a generic period whodunnit, which could have been set in any time or place where toffs played cricket and held garden parties.

You’re right, not a pure historical, but the first time that a non-alien threat in a more contemporary setting was used. It’s a type of story we don’t see much on screen but Black Orchid does show that it still works. And, of course, Big Finish has used the idea a few times too.
