Bit of a cheeky one to make you smile! 😆😘Have a great week and remember, if you haven't yet signed up for our FREE 5-day video guide about living in New Zealand do it now! itsadrama.com/ilovenz/
I remember as a kid having vinegar on fish & chips in New Zealand. However it was normally opening up the packet on the floor. Everyone sitting around it as a share packet. Tomato sauce and vinegar for dipping and plenty of bread & butter for chippie sandwiches
You guys.... you crack me up so much... I have set a reminder on my phone to watch your programme every Thursday. I get disappointed when I think of you two... and its only Tuesday. I love it so much that you have taken to the Kiwi culture so well and I think a law should be passed by Jacinda that Liz and Bri become NZ ambassadors to the rest of the world. You truely are the best and I feel related to you guys somehow... weird? Yeah? ...Nah!!!
Oh guys...what a beautiful comment...thank you SO much ❤️As we said on the show, it is people like you that make this space so wonderful and have us keep making videos every week. We really do appreciate you so very much. Thank you from the bottom of of our hearts. Liz and Bri xxx 🥰
Ohh Gary! Really?! I would have LOVED to have been there for that 😁 It's so weird... When I think of Hāngī I think of NZ, it didnlt cross my mind that you could do it in any part of the world! (Out of interest, what did you use in place of kumera?)
Hi Liz and Bri... 3 things 1...The only strange laws I know are my in-laws but they live in Suffolk 2... The Hangi should be our National Dush and 3....Why did the Aussie break his arm raking leaves.....because he fell out of the tree. It looks so lovely and warm there....I want to go home !!!
Hi Kent! They are good ones!! 🤣 Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to say hi! We really appreciate you being here with us. Have a lovely weekend over there in Blighty ☺️ PS: It is lovely and warm here in the Naki today, a bit windy but still beautiful ☺️
It used to be a thing years ago where there was a choice of vinegar or tomato sauce on the counter at the local fish and chippie. I remember hating the smell of the vinegar as a kid. Still not a fan lol.
Ohhh see I'm completely different Kathryn.... My dad used to being home fish and chips in England and you'd unwrap the newspaper and the smell was divine! All vinegar and hot chips...YUM!! (You can tell I haven't eaten yet can't you?? 🤣Thanks for being here, have a great weekend! ☺️
@@ItsaDrama Both my parents are from the north east. Emigrated in 1970 with my 2 sisters. I was on the way. Thought I was more kiwi when I lived over there in 91/92 but after listening to you podcasts, I resonate with a lot of what you're talking about. Having no family here, we lived like brits but didn't know anything else until we'd visit other people's houses. Mum and Dad adapted over the years but still remain british at heart. Love listening to you both. Cracks me up. My parents talk to each other just the same.
I remember growing up in the 50s and 60s, all fish and chip shops had malt vinegar on the counter. You could pour it on if you wanted it, it was in large pint size squeezy bottles.Better chips too, they were cut in the shop, all sizes and shapes.Real fleshy potatoess not over cooked french fries.
Hmmm..it would be interesting to know why they stopped doing it wouldn't it Roy? Thanks for being with us and for taking the time to share, we really appreciate it! Have a lovely weekend 😊
I was an 80s child and I recall the malt vinegar on hot chips. That or they would sell those tiny cans of watties. I can even remember it on the food trucks at easter show if I'm not mistaken.
I remember the REAL paper money in the '50s. It's hard to explain but it felt nicer than today's plastic - not that as a small kid did I have much of a chance to hold a 10 shilling note, or a one pound, in my hand. Love your friendly, informative, comical stuff. Keep it up.
I remember being so sad when they got rid of the one pound note and replaced it with a coin in the UK...you never felt richer than when, as a kid, your grandma sent you a pound note in your birthday card! 😁Thank you so much Peter, we really appreciate you being here with us ☺️
Back in the 60's and 70"s, wherever you got food there would always be salt n pepper and vinegar on the table or on the counter of the shop, I have no idea why it was stopped, as I do like vinegar, be it on chips or a meat pie. You guys a so much fun to watch and listen to. xoxo
That's so interesting...I wonder why they stopped?? Anyway my friend, thanks so much for sharing, and for your lovely words, we really appreciate you 🥰Have a great weekend!
I remember vinegar being common, there was often a small bottle on the table, anywhere you sat down and had fish and chips as a meal. The practise seems to have quietly died a show death. When it is available, I always sprinkle some vinegar on the chips and lemon on the fish. It helped cut through any grease.
Hahah! Never thought of it cutting through the grease 🤣Thanks so much for watching Joseph, and for taking the time to leave such a great comment. We really appreciate it!. ☺️
Vinegar destroys the natural taste of fish and chips. I would imagine it became in vogue when vendors were trying to mask the taste of bad fish. Good fish needs no such condiments. Salt yes, vinegar, no.
I wonder what Liz and Brian's take on the UK media reports that NZ is in some kind of prison, streets are empty and life is at a stand still? Doesnt seem to match up with anything I've seen.
We've always tried really hard not to listen to sensationalism news...(and you know how hard that is with social media and the likes). Before we backpacked the world for a year with our kids people would tell us: "oh...don't go to India we've heard it's this and that...don't take a sleeper bus in Vietnam we've heard it's this and that...don't sleep on people's couches in Sri Lanka we've heard it's this and that..." All total rubbish of course. Every single bit of it. If we'd had listened (and believed) we'd have never gone anywhere. So when we do hear stories such as that coming from the US we just smile and say 'is that so??!' And then, (depending on how cheeky I'm feeling), I'll say, 'If this is prison I'll gladly do a life sentence...'🤣 Thanks for watching! Liz and Brian
The weirdest law I've come across in the UK,if you hit a deer on the road you aren't allowed to take it home, but the people in the car behind you can. The bloody thing has just destroyed your car and you don't get the pleasure of eating it! I always moan about not getting lemon for the cod at the chippy and have to settle for tartare sauce.
That's something we never knew! How weird! Thanks for sharing and yes...they might not have viginer but I love that the kiwi fish and chip shop have a bowl of lemons on the counter! 🍋Have a great weekend my friend! 😁
Cool vid again. It's been a while since I've left a comment! I've always liked vinegar with fish and chips too. My Dad used to bring it out at home. You're right, it's not that common in fish and chip take-a-ways, although it's more common than you probably think. I've seen it a few times, probably due to the relatively large number of Brits living here these days. I think what's probably more common is for them to put in a slice of lemon, which goes great when squeezed over some fish. Either way, your adding some much needed acid to your meal!
Lovely to see your name Trascy! Yes, agreed, lemon works a treat on fish...especially New Zealand fish which is always so fresh and crunchy and battery...YUM!!!! My mouth is actually watering while I'm typing....😆🍋🐟
I went to a fish shop in the uk and it literally smelled like the fish was a few days old. Milky eyes and smell, also the mussels would have been considered illegally undersized here. I think vinegar on chips is great (and should be available) but honestly fresh fish is so beautifully tasty, I thought the british obsession with vinegar on fish was to hide that is was not really fresh. :) If I could make a law, I would make it illegal to sell water for more than fizzy drinks. Surely a fizzy drink is water + whatever they add to it, plain water should never cost people more.
Oh Yuk!! Maybe you have a point about using it to hide something...never thought of that (I won't tell Bri he'll only blow a fuse 😉). I'd love to know where and why the vinegar thing actually started. All I know is that I love it ( I also love tartare sauce on my fish and chips too and that's quite vinegary...) Hope your week is going well Anna! Lovely to hear from you 🥰
Vinegar: used to be an option when I was a boy last century. Rewards: most people would help out of the kindness of their heart and most people would offer a reward when the object is returned. Vets: I always ask the vet how much it will cost. No biggie.
The bull in the cow herd, was enforced by, if they saw a bull in the road facing fields it was a fine. Coz you only put a bull in with cows if your wanting them to breed. Oh with the vinager thing, it watties sauce fault, all the "you can't be a kiwi without your watties sauce" ads kinda stuck. Used to have a vinegar bottle in with the sauce bottle before you had to pay for sauce, and chicken salt got popular for some dam reason nobody knows.
What a fun video guys, great job. And brilliant call about making the Hangi the national dish. Maybe not enough people have had the chance to try it but that shows we need to get out more 😁 Not a fan of vinegar on my f & c''s but enjoy tartare sauce sometimes. Otherwise it's just a bit of salt and sometimes a bit of tom sauce lol.
Thank you! Ohhh yes...I love tartare sauce., especially homemade with capers and gherkins and lemon and (dare I say it) vinegar?? 🤣🤣Have a great weekend and thank you for being here with us ☺️
We found out after the show that it is actually illegal to put the words "no questions asked" in the advert, and yes, I think you are right, it would only encourage more theft...Glad to have you with us! Have a great weekend ☺️
We used to produce our own banknotes (and for many other countries) in Whangarei, at the Bradbury Wilkinson (owned by De La Rue of London) factory which closed in 1990.
Another good video. I just just watch a new YT channel called "Samdebmic" who are a couple from the US and their 4yo kid who are staying in NZ for a year. They have good videos of their travels around NZ but they don't have many viewers, they deserve more. Please give them a shout out. Thanks.
Awesome vid! the reason why we are not allowed to offer rewards for finding lost property is because untrustworthy people will steal things and wait for the reward offer before returning the items and claiming they found them.
5. Continued, yes company in Rotorua does takeaway hangi. Called kiwi kai. 6. Yay a yes from me. You guys make me laugh. Keep up the somewhat rambling insight into NZ life from an immigrant perspective. Liz your husband is very tolerant. I wish kiwi men were like that.
I find the bit about vinegar on chips a bit difficult to fathom. We used to get vinegar on chips at the fish 'n chip shop. Any fish' n chip shop. Things must have changed over the years. In saying that, since going Vegan nearly 30 years ago I haven't been in to a fish 'n chip shop. We put vinegar and Watties tomato sauce on our home made chips though. Oh, and by the way, after you said you preferred ketchup to Watties Tomato sauce, I went and bought a bottle of Heinz Ketchup. It has a very strong vinegar overtone which is not to our liking at all. Much prefer Watties tomtit sauce. Keep up the talking ;-) it's always fun to see you two speaking your minds. :-)
Ah Eric!! That's a lovely comment 🥰 Now then...I'm thinking ...(stand by...) I wonder if that's why we like Heinz ketchup? Because as you said, it tastes vinegary?? I reckon...Hmmmm...interesting! have a great week my friend! 😁
Agree vets should post prices! My state has no sales taxes one of 6 states that don't! I refuse to tip! Businesses must pay living wages! What I hate is some restaurants add an involuntary tip in the bill!
Love vinegar of fish n chips. Both our local chippies have vinegar. A lot of the fish n chip shops used to have the old wooden penny drop machine (pre pinball entertainment)
A year later and I’m chuckling. I never knew we had a Māori accent and that it was sexy 😂 I can’t stop laughing. Too cute alright. I’m gonna tell my work mates tomorrow. Haha 😂
Hahah! Chips with ice cream?? That's the sort of thing my kids woudl have gone bonkers for 😁😆Have a great weekend Danial, always lovely to hear from you 😘
Great video, sooo funny! In Canada, we go to the dump to watch the black bears, in New Zealand they go watch cows and their sexy time! LOL. OMG..love it! Where do i sign up on the protest for vinegar! I think it would only be fair for the two of you to do the next podcast with a Maori accent as a public service for your new law!😜 Well done guys! Maori smiles are so sexy!
Love this Randy! I never knew that you could go and watch black bears at the dump?! Thank you for sharing that with us 😁 Oh gosh...my Maori accent is terrible...It would be totally UN-sexy if we tried to do it...I need to listen and learn for a while yet! 🤣 Have a great weekend my friend, Liz and Bri 😘
I think in NZ if you drop your keys or your wallet most people go out of there way to get it back to you, in the UK I never felt that if you lost something it was gone for good.
I am always confident that whenever we lose anything here in NZ, it will get handed in. But in support of Britain, my nephew was living in London and left his wallet on the tube. It had his address inside. The guy who found it took three different trains and a bus ride to return it to him. That made me feel so proud ☺️ yay for human kindness!🥰
I only use vinegar white or brown on smoke fish 🐟. And, and mussel. Flak the mussel put in bowl 🥣👌, bit of sugar, lemon 🍋 and vinegar. Leave in fridge. The longer the best. Try it.
With lemons so available it’s probably why you get a lemon slice quite regularly but rarely get vinegar (or bloody gravy!). Lemon goes with fish, vinegar (which I love) disguises fish that isn’t fresh.
5:11 That's damn wacko! I guess you don't need it be legalised either since you guys are the second safest. This makes me remember an episode of my mum losing her earrings (my great grandma's from pre independence era) at the airport here in Reykjavik and she realised it only when she was packing to go back after 4 months and crickey! it was intact as a beetle in amber.
Terry but don't mate on a Sunday! True story in the 70s in Tucson Arizona I got caught mating behind closed doors on a Sunday and was threatened with arrest!
That « Brian, do you know that for a fact » reminded me of me with a few precious people in my life 🤣 But I’m right there with Brian with that where can I get a coffee in peace and quiet app.
🤣Thank you for watching and for saying hi, we'll let you know when we invent the app...until then it's just a case of 'drive past slowly and let me have a look inside..." 🤣
None of these already established laws seem odd! I was thinking odd nz laws like in Eastern ore it's against the law to kick rattlesnake heads on the sidewalk! This is a 19th century law when sidewalks were wooden with gaps in between and rattlesnakes would pop their heads up above the sidewalk!
Times have certainly changed, and so have our taste buds. Vinegar or Worcestershire sauces appear to have been replaced by Tartare or Aioli sauces. The one thing I never saw in a Kiwi fish n chip shop was pickled onions for sale in a jar.
When I was a kid there used to be a Fish & Chip shop in Levin that had a bottle on the counter labelled "Vinegar for Poms". . . . Kiwis eat their fish and chips with tomato sauce (and Aussies eat theirs with gravy)
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa.Hang on a minute. Where'd the vinegar go??? Chicken salt on chips? Like chicken stock/powder? I bet I know where that came from. Across the ditch probably :D
Hangi shops do exist, visited one in Christchurch two days ago. There is also the option of buying a mutli-kai cooker (manufactured in Whangarei) and making Hangi at home without having to dig the pit.
Been living here in Perth for 11 years now, there is a 24 hr supermarket here that gives sounds away,I better warn them. As for the Bovine booty, prudes be crushin shiiiiet! (In my best bro accent).
This has nothing to do with anything but I'm just wondering if you've been to Napier for Art Deco weekend? If not that could make for a fun travel video. Vintage cars and planes, deco dancers, everyone in 1930s costume, jazz at the soundshell, picnics, and lots of different events you can buy tickets for.
I love how you said "this has nothing to do with anything..." 😆 Thank you for this wonderful idea Anna, we've been to Napier many times but never for the festival and yes, you're right, it would make a fantastic travel video! Thank you so much for the idea 🥰
Yes Diane...vinegar. Yes vinegar yummy...We're not fussy what sort either. We'll take beer vinegar...cider vinegar,...red wine vinegar...Hang on...maybe I just need a glass of alcohol??? 🤣🍺🍷🍇
7:08 lol I'd sure vote for the motion if I was a Kiwi MP and it was proposed in the Parliament! Not sure how it would work out for me though. 😂 Brian has either a scouse or cornwall accent for all I know of the UK. My bro in law is half Irish but he grew up in Liverpool so I am kinda listening him in Brian. 😂😂
This will probably surprise you that Delaware is US state that has the closest accent to England and its still a tradition to put malt vinegar on our chips or french fries instead of ketchup . In fact at last time in the 70's there was no ketchup on the table you had to ask for it, however every table or counter had malt vinegar on it. You don't want to have contact tracing unless you subscribe to it. Otherwise burglars would know when you aren't home, that is why you don't post vacations on FB or public media. USA Nation dish are Pizza, Burgers, Turkey, BBQ. The Vet wants to be paid that is why she tells you because she doesn't want to be collection agency. Here you either pay ahead or at the end of the doctor's visit. The smile law sounds like a promotion for the Joker, Batman style. There is a guy, not mentioning names that is going to learn that accent soon enough, LOL!
Well I never... that's all I have to say on that on :-| As for a reward... depending how much is returned ... you may or may not get a reward... There is a difference advertising a reward and offering one afterwards... ;-) The vet bill thing... (Or for any service not just vet) ask before hand and most will give a ball park figure... if you want exact cost just ask for a quote. Vinegar use to be available as an option and I remember you use to be able to get it as a small tear tab sachet of vinegar and or sauce. But to be fair I have always gone for the garlic butter... mmmmmm (Homer Simpson Droooool) chippy sandwiches ... not a vinegar person myself went of doing that to my food back in the 80's lol... Bur each to their own I guess... (then again I haven't bought Fish n Chips in like 2 years now... Bit of a life style change) My guess is if you ask for it they will put it on for you. Nothing beats fresh fish... speaking of which have some Blue Cod in the freeezer... mmmm Plastic money all to do with anti counterfeit it is very hard to copy/produce and has multiple anti counterfeit properties. The last paper money was back in the late 80's early 90's (ish) . I believe all made in Canada. Go CANZUK.
This is why you're fab and we appreciate you and love you being on this channel with us - you know lots of good stuff about New Zealand!! 🇳🇿🥰 Thank you my friend! have a great rest of the week ☺️
You have such a beautiful backyard/garden. Yes we did have paper money at one point. I remember it well. And yes they've caught up here in the UK with plastic money. I thought they were quite backwards here when I first moved to the UK, when they still had paper money. I do miss the NZ $1 and $2 dollar notes in a way. The smell was wonerful. I'm with you on the vinigar thing. Got introduced to it by a yorkshire mate when I was 11-13 years old. I'm a convert. Though I admit I don't have it very often. Fish and Chips are terrible in London. I watched a youtube video where this couple in Auckland went to a place that did a hangi the traditional way and sell the results in one of those takeaway places. No idea if it's still operating, but it has been done. Also can't remember what it was called.
I love hearing from kiwis who have moved overseas, (especially when I can relate to where they are!). I always imagined that the fish'n'chips would be good in Landun...😉 Thank you as always for taking the time to share this with us James, you're always very generous with your comments and we really appreciate it. Have a great Weekend! 😁
@@ItsaDrama no the fish and chips are terrible. They batch cook the chips and you get a scoop out of the soggy batch. It's not nice. I prefer the NZ fish and chips over that, even the ones that do it staright from frozen. I've had fish and chips in Deal, Kent and they are wonderful. So it's just London. I was staying at my cousins house at the time. As to the mnoney. It's funny as the plastic £5 pound note was made originally using pig fat. You can imagine the reaction from certain religeous groups. Not sure if it still is. Have a lovely weekend in that glorious weather you have at this time of the year.
Nobody really cares if any animals are mating😃 alongside of the road. My dad would tell us kids that the horse has 5 legs instead of explain to us the proper reason why when we saw a stallion in the paddock
