8 Things NOT to Do in Los Angeles

#1 Don't Book a Flight to LAX
Avoid the crowds at LAX by flying instead to Burbank's Bob Hope Airport. It's far easier to navigate and is less crowded and has a direct rail connection to downtown Los Angeles.
#2 Don't get stuck in a queue at Pink's
Unless you enjoy tediously long waits and mediocre grub, be like those in the know and track down the nearest food trucks on Twitter.
#3 Don't Jaywalk
The city is notorious for its jaywalking tickets, and even celebs aren’t impervious to it. Just follow the crosswalk signals and be vigilant.
#4 Don't take a Hollywood star home tour
Unless you're into well manicured lawns or tall gates, a lot of celebrities don’t even live in Hollywood or Beverly Hills. You're more likely to see a celeb in one of the locally owned restaurants or independent shops.
#5 Don't walk to the Hollywood Sign
Even after you've made the climb, you won't get within 20 feet of the sign because of security and preservation measures. Instead: See it from further away. One of the best spots to view the sign can be found along Beachwood Canyon Drive.
#6 Don't go to the sunset strip during the day
During the day, the Sunset Strip is just another line of cafes and shops. It’s after the "sun sets" that it comes alive!
#7 Don't bother with Venice Beach Boardwalk
Yes it's known mostly for its interesting inhabitants who stroll the boardwalk along Ocean Front Walk but it's also usually very crowded, especially on weekends, where you’ll have to move with the speed of the crowd in order to walk down the Venice Beach Boardwalk.
#8 Don't go to Hollywood and Highland"
It's like the times square of L.A., and therefore a huge tourist trap! Everyone will try to sell you something on the street, and even Spiderman will ask for money to take a photo with him.

When I used to fly from Portland to L.A., it was definitely cheaper and easier to fly into Burbank, but if you're coming from further away, a lot of airlines don't even fly directly to Burbank. It's just something for more local short trips along the west coast or nearby states.

First tip is a sort of a fail. LAX is cheaper to fly into because it's bigger. Chicago to LA is $224 LAX vs over $400 at Burbank same day. Better to save a little money even if you have to really a longer ride. The LA Metro is also building a direct train to the airport.

its really not a nice place in the slightest and its only getting worse. there are a couple fun things to do here and there but it takes hours to even get to them (so many people, way to much traffic) more and more druggies and so much pollution if you ever do end up visiting, try out carneys
@kblitz21
@kblitz21 6 лет назад
I just came back from LA and it was great. The traffic moves quick, at tikes during the evening commute hours, there is heavy traffic but it moves. There’s lots of homeless but I had no issue with that and I bought many meals I could for them. About druggies, their every where in the US, but the homeless and people on drug in LA, do not bug you like in my home state of RI.
@tavrosnitram1529

@jimchevallier528
@jimchevallier528 8 лет назад
Kind of a quirky list. LAX isn't THAT bad and there's a Fly Away service which takes you right to the start of the Red Line metro. The Sunset Strip is different during the day, but not necessarily uninteresting (but parking's a nightmare anyway you cut it). Someone who wants to go to Pink's probably won't be satisfied with a food truck (even if I agree the dogs are uninteresting). The Venice Boardwalk is indeed crowded, but that's part of why it's fun. Also you can always step a few block over to Main Street, which is more civilized, or simply walk on the beach. Not wild about Hollywood and Highland myself, but it's pretty hard to avoid if you want to see the Chinese Theater, etc. And the shopping center itself is not better or worse than similar places (though I prefer the Grove, not least because it's right next to the Farmer's Market. Basically, most of the activities listed here are for exactly the kind of stereotypical tourist who might actually enjoy them; otherwise, no one ever had to tell me not to buy a Star Map. (When you see stars in LA, it's usually where you least expect them.)
@theend2703

1. Don't call it Los An-jell-eez unless you want people to look at you like you're a blob of bird poop that just dropped out of the sky. It's Los An-jell-ess. 2. There are no QUEUES IN LA, but there are, however, plenty of LINES. 3. Another great place to see the stars: at the dress rehearsals and opening nights for theatre (as in stage plays - not films) or at the concerts of local musicians, as well as at benefit concerts and cabarets (usually special events put on by the cast of a local or touring theatre production).

Burbank is fine but LAX is usually the least expensive airport option in the area. Also my suggestion to an "LA" visit is to stay in Orange County. If you like theme parks stay in Anaheim, where Disneyland is. If you like the beach stay in Newport Beach. Yes you will be an hour from LA (or more with traffic) but Orange County is centrally located to all of Southern California. LA is an hour north, San Diego is 1.5 hours south, and Palm Springs is 1.5 hours east. If you go to LA and expect to see more than just LA staying in Orange County would be your best option.

I toured the US in 1998; New York; amazing, Washington DC; fantastic, New Orleans was interesting, so was san Francisco. The Grand Canton is sublime. But then comes LA; I'm sorry but it is the dullest, ugliest & generally unappealing city I have ever visited. My advice; DON'T GO!
@TheJeffBean
@TheJeffBean 8 лет назад
Having toured in my younger years, I've been to every place you've listed; minus New York. We only drove through New York, because we didn't have time to stop. I grew up in NC and mostly lived in or around Asheville. In 2013, I felt an overwhelming urge to move away. I ended up living in L.A. for an entire year. While it has downsides, as any city would, I'd honestly say it's one of the most beautiful places I've been. The vegetation, the mountains, the ocean, the sunset, the warm weather year round, and yes, even the people! L.A. was much different for me than anywhere else. I'm not a huge people person, and where I'm from the majority of people you come across are only looking out for themselves. Hey, that's totally fine. Everyone has to do what's best for them, right? Except in L.A. everyone I met, whether they had been born and raised in or had relocated to L.A., all seemed genuinely happy to not only meet me, but help me make other connections. Everyone was trying to help everyone out! I lived in Pasadena, but I was constantly meeting people and before I knew it had friends in Long Beach, Torrance, Santa Monica, Venice, Hollywood, and Valencia even. L.A. might be dull if you're not into science, art, culture, surfing/skating, delicious foods, music, film, photography/other forms of entertainment, or happen to be just flat out broke. I could see where one might find L.A. to be an overrated city for those suffering from adhd. But I think if you had time to find real people who just wanted to do the things they loved and cared enough to take you along, your perception might change. I'd scoffed at the idea of L.A. for a decade or more before moving there. I truly believed it was an overrated bullshit city. I moved there on a whim, and it not only changed my perception of Los Angeles County, it transformed my life as a whole. Anyway, I've seen my fair share of shit towns and cities, but I don't think i'd ever tell anyone not to go anywhere. People need to see things for themselves. What you found dull, ugly, and unappealing is something many people find exhilarating, beautiful, and alluring.

You have to know how to do LA. It doesn't cater to a passive tourist itinerary, because there’s no consolidated center like the others. But it’s the most content-filled, interesting city in America right now.
@Twirble
@Twirble 7 лет назад
Nick Gray LA has changed. I first moved over here in 2000 and nobody ever went downtown and Hollywood was a dump. I moved back ten years later and the place was transformed; cleaner streets and air and an ton of restoration. Downtown LA is one of my favorite places and Hollywood, despite the tourists, is a lot of fun if you know where to go. One thing I love about it is you can live here ten years and never see it all. Every neighborhood is it's own unique place with its own character. Some of my current favorite neighborhoods are Main street in Dogtown (Santa Monica/Venice) The Historic Core downtown and Malibu.

I went to LA from March 22 2018 till April 2. Most of your list “not to do” is bs. 1. LAX was not bad at all. I arrived and departed from terminal B, it was not bad and the baggage claiming was quick. Also, shutter buses to the car rental and hotel are available and it’s free! 2. Hollywood and highland was worth going and it was great. 3. I did the Hollywood sign hike and it was not bad. If you hike to the front of the sign trail, you get a better view. But go all the way to the top pass the sign. You see a beautiful 360 view. 4. I have to agree with the Sunset strip. It’s better during the night. 5. Venice was worth going and it was not bad. I did not see it during the tourist season. But other videos I seen, it’s worth going.

The walk up to the Hollywood sign has many great views of the city which makes it well worth the time. Also the street they say to get your picture is not tourist UN-friendly. Also eat at Original Tommy's Hamburgers on Beverly & Rampart.

I live in the greater L.A. area so I go to downtown about every month and that Spiderman guy did force my family for a picture we didn't even want Also, try exposition park, it has a lot of good museums. A good spot to see the Hollywood sign is from the Griffith observatory. Try the international places such as little Tokyo or China if you want food like that. Finally, go to Tommy's world famous chili, but not when there is a Dodger game (also Don't where anything Angels or any other baseball team related)

BOB HOPE Airport might have a train connection but it's currently (DEC 2016) 200 EURO more than flying to LAX. I'd rather spend the 50 $ taxi drive.

I live in LA and every once and a while I'll go down to Hollywood and Highland. I don't mind it. Though there was a street performer who was drumming and whenever he saw someone filming him he would just stop playing until you either payed him or stopped filming.

Don't go the San Fernando Valley because it super boring (upset food trucks) and never ever go to Antelope Valley (that the dark spot of LA and it is there, for your pit stop before driving to Las Vegas but you don't want to stop there)

One more thing: If you're in North LA, don't park on any Northern major streets or in the residential areas. You will get towed! Park on minor streets that are more so in the business district down south. If it's too far for you to walk, take an Uber and remember where you parked!

So what if you have to fly to LAX airport, any helpful wisdom? How do I get to the shuttles? Is it dangerous to drive in Los Angeles?
@stevew3879
@stevew3879 7 лет назад
I'm in Los Angeles area, and you are pointing out some common knowledge things (stars don't necessarily live in those houses anymore), but you are saying things that people in LA wouldn't follow themselves. For example, if you are coming from an international city or even a domestic line unless it's in California like San Francisco, Burbank airport is too much of a hassle to get to. Sure, LAX is crowded, but if you're coming for example from London, England, you have to fly to someplace like San Francisco, go through customs there, and then go from the international terminal to the domestic one at SFO and then catch a flight to Burbank. Yes, Burbank is in many ways a A better airport than LAX, but it is not as easy to reach as the video makes it sound. Also, Burbank airport is more in the northern part of Los Angeles county, where'as LAX is on the west side, but more central. I've never been to pinks hotdogs either, cupids was better LOL

First off; some of the best airlines fly into Lax so for some it is necessary. Many Stars also do still live in Hollywood and Beverly Hills according to local news reports. The Venice Boardwalk is an absolute must see for its colorful characters and fun atmosphere. You can go on a quiet day if you cannot stand crowds but most definitely consider it. You can rent a bike as well and bike up along the ocean or walk the beach as well, so you do not have to be in the thick of the crowds the whole time. As someone who lives here, I rarely want to go to Hollywood and Highland, but it does have a fun atmosphere and interesting things to see like Madame Tussade's the Chinese Theatre and other museums, fun shops like Sweet, and restaurants, so telling people not to go there is a bit of a disservice. Perhaps if people hate crowds they should avoid it, but it is not always too crowded. Most of the rest seems right I Just have not tried Pinks Hotdogs yet.

Hi, I live in LA and I revised their list 1. LAX is fine lol, honestly people overrate how chaotic it is. Probably the chillest TSA too, depending on whos working. Now, Bob hope is a pretty relaxed airport and its less stressful, but LAX isn't nearly as bad as anybody says it is though. 2. Pinks is p good, line will only take you like 20 minutes max and its a nice experience. Hot dogs are pretty good, nothing game changing but you get to say you got hot dogs at pinks 3. TBH california cops are way less chill about jaywalking than any other state, in my opinion. I usually wait at signs lol 4. They're right when they say you wont see any stars on the home tour, but theyre still very nice homes and fun to look at. You can probably go tour them yourself if you wanna put in the effort. 5. The hike to the sign really should be about the hike. Its a nice hike 6. I mean theyre right, the bars, clubs, and music venues are poppin at night, but im annoyed so im disagreeing anyways 7. Actually, keeping it real, I've never been to the venice beach boardwalk 8. hollywood and highland honestly is some boring shit tbh. For tourists its probably fun for a night or two, but everyone wants your money and about 1 in every 20 people you'll pass by is totally fucking crazy and acting on it. Also a huge homeless population, I know some tourists mind that. Tons of tourist traps.
