I hope everyone is staying safe out there. I stayed up super late putting this together last night because I can see a lot of people are having a difficult time coping with recent changes to our industry. I’m confident that these changes are temporary, and if you can weather this storm and take this time to better yourself, when all these gigs come roaring back, you’ll be in a much better position.
yeah im fine, but i am a production manger and had a festival that was supposed to start today but because of covid -19 the festival is 400000 dollars in dept that cant be paid back that would be paid back by the festival money that was maid by venders etc.
I’d already made the decision to take the time to learn new stuff to further extend my skill set. In my case I’m going to learn Arduino programming as there are many great cheap kits and online programming resources. I’ve found the key to actually leaning is to set yourself ( better still have someone else set it) a task , so that way there is a distinct goal. Just fiddling with a console doesn’t mean you can operate program it in a real world situation
Learn basic networking and its application in our industry. No excuses. Being a production pro that cannot set up a network in 2020 is like being a 'conventionals-only' lampie in the late 90s.
Really solid advice all round. I run a small rental house in the UK and we've just had half our upcoming work cancel in the space of 48 hours. Going to use the time to train up our crew, maintain equipment and dive into some R&D. We are opening our doors to local freelancers who want to drop in and use this time to get hands on experience with gear and I know a lot of other companies are doing the same, I would urge people to get in contact with local suppliers and see what opportunities there are.
WOW, you couldn't make this video at a better time. my gig this weekend got nixed and schedule moving forward is very shaky. When I was notified, I immediately setup my FOH in my living room and began to program and experiment with this new found free time. I always try to use my free time to learn new tricks and program new effects for my show.
Events over 100 people cancelled in our country The Netherlands. not a single job available for entertaining purposes until mid april. Really appreciate you making this video i had absolutely no idea what to do. thanks Christian!
Thanks for the tips, Christian! My city prohibits gatherings of 250+ persons until the end of March :\ I respect the decision though. It's great to see you recommend ways we can still work for ourselves! Love your background lights and setup!
Christian I do appreciate the video, I have recent become a fan of your content, you’ve definitely took the icing of the cake on this one. Definitely giving me a clear mind on things that I’ve been doing and things that I could be doing as well. Just wanted to say much love.
So here in Ghana, just yesterday 12th, we got the first 2 cases of the v. I've already had an international conference cancel on me etc. Been thinking of what to do in the meantime. I appreciate this video Chris.
All very helpful advice, thanks for looking out for us! I'd recommend Resolume and Blender, both powerful software with easy learning curves. We use Capture for our 3D renderings and often find it useful to model out objects not found in Capture with Blender. There's also something incredibly calming about your voice haha much needed in these difficult times. Looking forward to more content!
Lol Christian said "chances are if your watching this video your either young or new to the Industry" Well I am neither going on 30 years now! Just love the channel because its all about the MA!
Very inspiring video, nice to see that you have cheered up so many people! Some big city festivals are canceled in Russia... But we hope that the situation in the whole world will back to normal soon!
So many events got cancelled, learned MA2 across the year I wish I could learn more from someone like you. Really inspired to how you are able to sync the lighting cues to timecode. Had an idea to share like effects that we somehow came across by experimenting. Not sure if anyone here is keen! :") Learned from the best @Christian Jackson
This is my story... I'm British, and was in Dubai when this all started to go down. I had 4 gigs lined up out there, back to back, and they all vanished pretty much overnight. The furthest I got was turning up to a load in for a corporate event, and it was cancelled before we even opened the first truck. About weak later, the company I was working for came to me and said straight up that they need to end our contract immediately. I am friends with the MD of the company, so I was very flexible with them, unlike most of the guys, I didn't demand a 50% cancellation fee, and only asked for my day rate for the 2 weeks that I had already been out there. They said they'd have a new PO sent and signed on Sunday last week. They flew me back, and now they're ghosting my emails. I don't want to mention names, but they are one of the biggest lighting companies on the planet. I heard from a friend who's an employee at the company, that the Dubai office has laid off 30+ employees as of yesterday. This is hitting the event and entertainment industry really hard. My next gig is in May...
Good stuff, definitely saw this unfolding in slow motion, got put on unpaid leave today. A month vacation, touchdesigner deepdive and my work's vectorworks license... got plenty to do. September will hit hard this year if we're not all dead.
In the LED video world, I would recommend diving into ROE Evision, Novastar, and Brompton if you work for a video company/freelance as a LED video tech and are still a bit hairy with these processors. Take a processor home and a panel that works with it and try to learn where every menu option is. You never know when you'll need to troubleshoot a screen and know where one specific menu option is in order to fix some odd visual glitches, or how to reload the calibration coefficients for a panel.
Our local community theater I found out yesterday was postponed until September. I wasn't involved with it this time but I was looking forward to going to it. We've had no reported cases however we don't have very many tests because we have a lot of hypochondriacs, so.
I’m 14 and I typically design theatrical shows. I use etc eos for all the shows I work on. All three of the shows I was working on got postponed/cancelled. I was hoping to learn the hog software since I have an etcnomad so I am able to run it. Where is a good place to start learning? Also if I were to try to learn MA, should I start with MA 2 or 3? I really enjoy your videos.
We can relate to the 1099 situation with event staff. We do temp dental staffing and many dental offices have chosen to close, making it difficult for our temp workers to make money.
Awesome video. I already prepare myself for learning most of the things that you mention. Touchdesigner is by far my favorite Software it help me a lot on a lot of gigs recently. For now I will learn programming because it is the future. I just finished coding my own website in HTML and CSS and now I am learning Javascript to make it better. Thanks for all your advices
It's unfortunate because we come from a world that is accustomed to exact dates, times, scheduling, etc. Having no set, or even estimated return date is what is so new to everyone. I totally agree though. Learn, study, make new contacts. The chaos will return. we know it. 🤙
Yeah man this is rough for a lot of us. I was supposed to DJ... I mean WORK today and tomorrow but now. Canceled. Every gig I have is canceled. Currently looking for employment anywhere else. Good luck everyone.
Now that I have time on my hands, I’m ganna learn Grandma (coming from chamsys) spend some time with capture 2020, set up a rig in my shop and have a blast, if your in Jersey come quarantine with me, I’ll teach you stuff haha
As this virus spread. I'm going to spend more time on my DJ mixes as well video editing. With college classes moved online. I definitely have more time play with my hobby.
I was suppose to work a con this weekend, the city shut all events down. The crew doing the lighting and audio had finished setting the stage up and rigging all the lights, they were testing the rig when word came down that the event was canceled. I felt really bad for them.
"You're probably new to the industry. Am I wrong?" Nope. College senior for theater design going into concert work here, and it's crazy. I had a job lined up that I was confirmed for minus signing the paperwork and now it's possibly vaporizing. But I'm just gonna use this as some time off away from school/work this summer, work on my lx/laser/video integration skills I've been accumulating and wait until this fall to jump head first. There's gonna be a lot of people leaving the line of work, and definitely looks like there's going to be a massive influx of rescheduled events when this all blows over.
I did a gig last week, that was the last event weekend that will happen in my country for a while because any events are heavily discouraged and 500+ are totally forbidden.
I host Karaoke and and acoustic Jam in Canada, and we have only 1 case so far in our province and luckily we are still running normal.. Not huge crowds, local regulars mostly and although we are cautious, we feel better mentally being out with each other and singing and talking.. We were supposed to have the Juno's tomorrow but thankfully they cancelled it.. And The only reason I say that it would bring people from all over Canada here.. And so far we are doing good in our infected number... I feel for all the financial implications of this, and I am soon to be hit with it as well. But yes, Practice, and build the best show you can during these times for when we get back in the saddle, we can show them some wicked shit... :)
I'm taking my time to watch my RU-vid watch later list as most of it is stuff that is over a half-hour that I really wanted to watch like tutorials and things, at least until I can afford the internet.
It’s so crazy! Here in UK we don’t even have it bad, but everyone is freaking out and cancelling events left, right and centre. Really gutted to have so many gigs get cancelled :(
If you have any questions regarding Vectorworks I'd be happy to help out!! You have helped me plenty!! I have been using VW for about 10 years now everything from 2D light plots to full color 3D renderings.
Number 9 - Everytime when firing faders on your console, after use, burn the faders, dispose of them correctly and then replace them to prevent infection 😂😂
Balcony Concerts! Can this go viral and not in the coronavirus way? For all those techies out there, music folk, Lighting, sound, Video, DJs, musicians, etc… Can we start up balcony concerts, or live stream concerts! Like home concerts, but more public, more giving. That way we can all stay in with Limited contact, and maybe even get paid? (As long as the toilet paper holds out?) #BalconyConcert, #LiveStreamConcert, #share, #share-this
I have started using touchdesigner 2 years ago, and it has been one of the best career investments I have made. I highly recommend learning it. It's a bit steep at the beginning, but don't worry, keep grinding through. Gradually the software logic will become clearer and the potential are endless. I use this software all the time. Occasionally as my main control software, or alternatively just to look after and manipulate some sections of my work flow as needed. As you said, it's great to receive several different types of protocols (osc, midi, artnet and so on.. ), sensors (kinect, arduino, cameras) as well as external audio and video feed, manipulate that data, and send out whatever you need for your specific project. There are many resources online. recently they have been compiled in one website that a very generous TD user put together alltd.org
