Another way to avoid the sketch layer from interfering with the R shortcut is to lock it. Then you can still see the sketch, but it will not be selected.
I'm pleasantly surprised by how similar it looks to Photoshop. Nearly all of these are options I use regularly right now. Only the clipping layers (locking alphas) looks a bit more tedious here, but I think I could live with that. Once my Photoshop discount runs out, I think I'll be using Krita.
I believe there are also ways to do clipping layers in a similar way to how photoshop does it in Krita. I just find that this way runs a bit faster so that's what I shared! It may seem a little tedious in the video, but once you get used to it, it doesn't feel too bad :)
I've been using krita for close to 2 years so I've learnt most this stuff over time and trail and error, but that shift + backspace will save me hours of work down the road as I work with selections a lot. thanks a ton :D
@@Noctualis You can change the behaviour of the fill tool in the tool option docker. You can tell it to disregard all other layers and only sample current layer or you can also tell it to sample layers with specific colour labels.
Omg, you've no idea how much i wish to find this video sooner . How many hours i would save with that tip to find layers! But better latter them ever! Great video!
I've been using krita forever now but I'm still finding new shortcuts, the R shortcut and color picking one will likely be my new fave cause I always have a buttload of layers and its so difficult to grab colors I've got to undo filters and everything this is awesome! also found some new brushes to try so yeehaw
i've always struggled with painting because it was so tedious to keep on brushing with the pen while trying to avoid color from going out of the outline. your explanation of everything is so clear and simple! thank you
Regarding to transform tool or crop tool , you dont really need to press Enter button to make the changes i usually press B to get back to my brush and krita still makes these changes. I find it faster.
The video gets right into the details efficiently and helps me to use Krita in a more productive way. I prefer your way of teaching over many other howtos on RU-vid where details of understanding are left off. Thanks for the wonderful howto!
This is a very helpful, useful video! Adding a comment and a like in the hope it will help push this video up in Krita search results. Some other tips that might help save a beginner digital artist some headaches off the top of my head: - Before even starting digital painting I'd recommend having a solid knowledge on how to draw first or else you'll be making things harder for yourself by trying to learn all those fundamental skills on top of trying to figure out your painting program and how it works. Sure it's doable but it's an added layer of difficulty -Mirror your canvas often! You'd be surprised just how easy it is to paint on an unintentional angle, I couldn't believe my own eyes on how tilted and bad my proportions could be because it all looked fine at the time. It might seem trivial but is really powerful and easy to use, so use it! -The Tool Options docker is Krita's hidden, secret weapon. There are a ton of options there to be explored and can really change how various tools behave. Oh, and just a little context for the 5 key resetting your canvas rotation, 4 will rotate left and 6 will rotate right by 15 degrees I believe. So in that context 5 makes sense. Hope this helps somebody and again, great video!

I started using Krita in like March, and this stuff? It's mindblowing. I think I need to write on paper every of this to renember them 💀 Thank you really
Great video! Btw if you look at the tool options the transform tool has a lot more use, like liquifying and warping the object. There you can also limit the paint bucket tool to current layer so it doesn't see edges that are on other layers
Oh, I didn't know it had liquify in it too! That's good to know! I did notice after recording this that you could set it to one layer in the tools docker. Probably will do a part 2 with some more of the UI stuff like that 😁 thanks for sharing more tips!
@@SaebreWulf lmao that sounds really intense 😂 I just use a brush that either comes with krita now or is free from Deevad that does a similar thing to liquify!
the ctrl alt color picking is an absolute life saver. I've been struggling to use the multiply layer for so long cause it's so tedious to go back and color pick everytime
Cool! I use Krita and I already knew a few of those, but had no idea about the 3d rotation and shortcut for canvas rotation! This is gonna save me a lot of time and effort! Thank you for sharing :3 I remember what a huge discovery it was for me to find out I can press P to use color picker and B to go back to brush ^^'
I've had krita and my drawing tablet since 2018 and I've only started using more now and this helps SO MUCH because i didnt use it before since i was new to it/scare of using it but this helps alot so thank you!
This is an amazing video, thank you so much! I've been trying to focus more on Krita so I could finally stop using photoshop, and your video helped a lot
I've started digital art 5 years ago with Krita and it's only today that I've decide to actually watch a tutorial/tip video... and boy, Krita is even more amazing than I first thought. 😅 THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I learned a lot and it'll make things so much easier, omg! 🙏💕
Thank you so much for this video, I am a traditional artist new to the digital art world and there are still a lot of things that are foreign to me 😅 lol. However, this was a very informative video, I will definitely be re-watching it!
I remember watching this video when I started digital art. Now I noticed it in my recommended. Felt really nice coming back.. Thank you, from past and present me :) ♥
What a treasure chest of tips! Thank you so much. I'm going to need to watch and practice all this many times in order to make it habit. There's so much great information on this video!!!
I have been using krista for a year and literally all of this stuff you are showcasing is things I've never known. I've looked at countless tutorials, but this is undoubtedly the best one I've seen. Thank you!!
Kind of a beginner to Krita and I'm very happy I got recommended this! All of these tips were incredibly helpful to me and I'm so eager to put them all to use!!!
This is the first tutorial of yours I've watched and see it's also the first that you narrated, thank you very much for adding the voice over. I'm hoping you'll be doing more where you explain things instead of the speed views. Awesome work.
i just downloaded krita & tbh I'm kind of struggling with it! but, i thought I'd watch a few videos to learn how to use it better. (also, im rlly not an artist, im trying to learn to draw, better)
Just starting and I used to use procreate this really helped me with the shortcuts and understanding. I loved how you explained it and went into the motions. This was top tier thank you:))
the last tip with color picking tool is so helpful! I always use some multiply layer or overlay and it's so tiring to keep changing it back to normal, color pick it, and then putting it back to multiply so this helps a lot!!!
About color picking, I've always used Alt key on the specified layer to show only that layer on the canvas, then picked from it the color I needed. So the Ctrl + Alt proves to be an excellent alternative! By the way, you can also use the Alt key I mentioned above on the groups. I personally find it very helpful when I work on lights and shadows in the piece with rough contours. I click on the Colors group to hide all outlines and see how my image presents without it. Ah, I just remembered, in the Transform tool if you use Alt key, you can stretch both sides simultaneously, or in other words: keep the center in the same place (can be used with Shift to resize whole piece without moving its center). Anyhow, great video and cute cat! Thanks a lot!
But I'm using a Chrome tablet. I don't use a keyboard or a mouse. I use a pen and touchscreen. So all the shortcuts and right click don't help one bit.
I swear EVERY TIME! when it comes to a paint brush. Instead of teaching us how to make or get these paint brushes for ABSOLUTELY free. Their is some. gumroad patreon or something. Look i get it. But still its annoying im 100% broke. Im 21 still living with my parents. Have no drivers permit nor license. Diagosed with autism ocd and adhd. Can't find good tharapy. No one can carpool me sense they all have jobs. I live in a rural area. Where public transpost is nearly non existent. I have all these issues. And i just want to learn this goshdang software. Only to be bombarded by someones lessons costing money. Look again i get it. If you have a talent and you want to share it and make a profit from it im all for it. But isn't that what ad revenue is for? And even that yeah youtube can be dumb and demonetize a video for no apparent reason. But again. Me being in a tough position. And low self esteem about my art It is frustrating to have good resources and lessions behind a paywall. Its frustrating because on one hand as a creator it makes sense. But on the consumer/student side its frustrating. It makes me so upset. And i just know this will be takin down for no good reason . Which is unfair. I sould be able to express my frustration. Even though no one cares. Its just so irritating.
I don't have any Tips, I am NOT an Artist. I do have a Question: Does Increasing the Opacity Darken the Line Color while Keeping the Line Thickness the Same???
Hey, quick question @Noctualis, I'm relatively new to krita, and am exploring different brushes, even if I have a set that I mostly use. I see in your brush picking window, you can preview the "pattern"/or whatever its called, of the brush, I think this would be ever so useful to me. How can I do this?
When I use the transform tool for some reason I the square around my design is so much bigger and it's hard for me to rotate and move my designs around. PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS!!
Hi, I am new to Krita, and how the hay do I delete anything??????? I have tried to make keyboard shortcuts for Ctrl + shift + D since that what it was for photoshop and I have grown used to it but nothing I do seems to work and can't for the life of me find delete in the settings. Please help.
I'm a total noob at digital art. I never knew what alpha locked meant before. That is so helpful! But what exactly does the multiply thing do? (With the shadowing in the last tip)
I met you from Instagram a long time ago, and I love your drawings, all my friends have your pictures on their phone numbers. I look at the guides to Krita, and this is Noctualis! I had no idea you had a RU-vid channel! And I had no idea you were a girl!
The thing with the transformer tool. Could you help me? I’m trying to select only a part of a sketch within a layer but always transforms everything in the layer 😭 I drew the head on the body so well but it’s too big ad I don’t think I can redraw it I just need to shrink that part to fit accordingly please 😭
