Greetings from Canada, just want to say thank you for your 7 year old video, it really connected with me, realized I was the one picking up the glass, nobody else... after watching your video in 2017, April 1st arrived, which is an anniversary date of my father who died many years before from complications due to his lifetime alcoholism, ironically April Fools Day. So as many of us are impacted by our fathers, judged, resulting in insecurities, etc., I still fought with my father even though he passed away, in my head.... and having a stubborn memory of him telling me I'm just like him. So in 2017 on April 1st, recalling your video, I quit, stopped drinking. April 1st has 2024 passed, and it's been over 7 years now. I have other habits now, tinkering in my workshop, making parts or working out, steady day job, etc.., there are other methods of getting "distractions" and getting positive results, whether it's called dopamine, the brain is something I had to control, but it is a fight, and will always be, yet all I have to do now is look back and think, was the result of drinking good for me, and the answer is clearly no. Sorry for the long reply, and thank you again. Mike

I've been a very very heavy drinker since I was 20, I'm 34 now and I can't remember a single day when I didn't get drunk. I work full time and within half hour of finishing my shift I'm drinking. I've lost three relationships that were important to me because of alcohol but yet I still drank. Yesterday was my first sober day in 14 years. I feel extremely unwell but I am not touching another drop. Wish me luck 🤞.

@@daughterofzion2146 I was watching this video today because a friend of mine is trying to stop, too. I am currently at 107 days sober. My former best was 70, but that was 10 years ago. I wasn't as heavy as Matt768, but I averaged a good 3-4 days a week and usually drank until I passed out. My friend is like Matt768. I asked him how long he can hold off drinking after work. 30 minutes? He said no chance. I'm not cured by any means, but I know if I can help my friend stay sober for even 1 day, it'll shine a light on him that it IS possible and also necessary. Please keep trying, Tribe of Judah. Lots of people struggle with you and we are trying to kick this nasty habit. I hope you find a way to get sober and stay sober. I'm going to keep trying to help my friend. Maybe you know someone also trying to quit or already has. Don't give up!

Trace Miller Not only am I with you, I'm praying for recovery for every alcoholic out there who wants to recover, but is lost as to where to start as I was. thanks for putting it into perspective. I gravitate & am sensitive to all things alcohol; labeling, pretty bottles, cool drinking glasses & I guess the feeling of always having it; the habit. Realize, Reject, & Correct. Certainly easier than it sounds but worth an attempt. I want this gone from my life. It's been 23 years in the making, either IT will be gone, or I will be gone from this world. I no longer want to let Alcohol control my life. I want to cut this tether,

I just want to say thank you!!! I am still not 100% AF but since jan 2, 2023 I have only drank 3 times. For the last 10 years I have been a daily- get- drunk drinker. And before that I was a binge drinker since 11. I watch your videos almost everyday. You are so real. And, so unapologetically to the point, I absolutely love it. I hear your voice when I think about drinking. "Theres no fucking point, what the fuck are you doing? " and I need to hear it. I used to hear myself but now, I hear you and I'm more apt to listen. So- just a huge thank you. I am breaking the cycle of addiction to alcohol in my family. And you are helping tremendously. ❤ much love to you and your family. ThankyouThankyouThankyou!!!!

I've been a daily drinker from the time I wake up till the time I pass out at night, but I'm on day 2 of no drinking. It's my birthday gift to myself to finally put my health as a priority and take control of myself. I threw my wine and shot glasses away. I know it won't be easy, but I actually hate drinking and am fully determined to stop once and for all.

this is one of my favorite videos of yours so far!! I spent years in AA and it didn't "get me sober". agree completely that it is a choice. I wish i had the incentive of a family to be sober for . It's been hard for me to find a purpose , a passion, or reason. THANK YOU for your videos!!! You do inspire me. I have three days sober again and changing my diet to raw vegan seems to help a lot. Onwards and upwards! :)

Hi Lisa, I think when you have a dependency on alcohol, whether physical or psychological, a family wouldn't necessarily stop you drinking. Ultimately, you have to want it and do it for yourself. Well done on your 3 days sober! :-)

Lisa - I can relate because yes, like you, it’s been hard for me to find purposes and passions. I too sat in rooms of AA meetings only to feel ultimately defeated. Even connecting with other people didn’t do it for me. If you ever need anyone to talk to or sound off to, I’m always here. You seem like a pretty awesome girl. Keep fighting Mark G. - AA is a wonderful program, but it certainly doesn’t work for everyone. It didn’t for me either. I’m glad it’s worked for you, but be open minded to the fact that there are other ways aside from AA to get sober. Also, maybe you shouldn’t be a pretentious asshole who assumes that she didn’t want sobriety. Am I missing something here? Did you know her?
@Kokoro252
@Kokoro252 6 лет назад
Mark G. What was pretentious was the tone in your reply to her. Addiction is fatal. I don’t disagree with you. But, once you’ve gone through the ugly withdrawal effects and get yourself invasive help in rehab (as I’ve done), you also learn that it is a choice in deciding to pick up another drink. When you have a craving, you don’t roll over and say, “hey, I have a disease, I need to have a drink.” One of the most frustrating things (actually, now equally comical) is when I was about to relapse walking into a liquor store. Instead of buying anything after being in there for more than five minutes, I finally told myself, “this is insanity” and walked out. I had called my sponsor at the time, who told me it was nothing more than an act from my higher power because I have a disease. Sobriety is a good way to live - I’m all for people achieving it however they can as well - but there’s no need to put others down because they didn’t do it your way.
@seanpadraigobrien1260
@seanpadraigobrien1260 6 лет назад
Mark G. You sound like the type of people who scaremongering has become an art form in AA. It keeps people away. If you properly read the big book they said attraction not promotion. basically don't be a fundamental crack pot ramming your opinions down people's throats. People get easily brainwashed in AA that's the problem. But I've met some great stable souls in the rooms.

Day 2 and starting to feel the effects. What you said in the beginning about it being a choice and a habit is so reassuring. I've been kidding myself for too long now and now i am making the choice to take control. Any time i get a craving i prepare some tea or coffee. The act of making a (non alcoholic) beverage really seems to break the train of thought. Thank you for your inspiring messages. I wanna go take a hike now! Cheers from Las Vegas

I totally agree with your perspective that it is habit, not a weakness or a disease. I know AA has helped a lot of people, but I never liked the business of putting a label on yourself that is never going to go away "I'm an alcoholic." In some ways, it makes alcohol even more central to people's lives after quitting. It is put at the very centre of their identity as people, forever. Bottom line: whatever works, works and AA has worked for a lot of people. It is not though the only way to quit drinking.

I'm on about day 15 after finding the hangovers too tough to take, feeling better still having a bit of anxiety during the night, had a craving last night but got through it with exercise and keeping a positive mind state, the thing to remember is if you drink you will feel good for about 6 hours, and then feel like shit for a day or two, if you exercise you will feel much better about yourself with no hangover, so I know it's hard but, after years the hangovers get worse and at some point your faced with the decision that you almost can't drink as it becomes too unbearable in days after,

I thought that is absolutely brilliant I'm glad to have listened to this before going into a program I honestly, thought I was an alcoholic, but I'm sure that I can do this on my own without getting addiction to some type of programs, thanks for the wisdom, I know it's not easy but it can be done!

Meditation really works. Meditate on how gud the next morning is going to be. How u will spend time vd ur kids. Be grateful for everything u have. Keep talking to urself. At first l, u will think u r crazy but self talk is very very important. We self talk ourselves into or out of every situation in life. It is even more important than suppport groups. Eat three big healthy meals. That way, ur body is already full of gud things, and cravings are much less. Also try Kuber Mudra while meditating.

You really got me with the puppy analogy; they wrestle with their litter mates and that's how they learn what is ok; my sis was a total tomboy and beat the boys at baseball, like Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird. The flip side of the coin is that nowadays in big cities, children aren't that safe and certainly their parents send those signals out. I think it's good to keep the idea of intentionality alive, remember that choices are still available; if you think you're destined to go down a certain path, you stop trying. But as this video is about acute alcohol withdrawal in the first few days, I really would add that anyone experiencing extreme sensations; uncontrollable tremors, possibly hallucinations, avoidance of light and sound, continuous vomiting and diarrehea (sp, sorry); get medical help. Having a seizure, which is what all this is leading up to, can kill you if you're alone in an apartment somewhere. You might have a seizure in hospital but you'll be in a safe place on a valium drip which will save your life. I would advise consulting your medical practitioner first anyway -- not all of them know that much but they should be notified. I can't emphasize that enough; alcohol is sometimes taken more lightly than it should be because it's legal but it's the second most dangerous drug after heroin. No joke, if you want to live, and be the best person you can be, it's going to take hard work and the faster you start the better. Easy for me to say; took me ages. If I can do it anyone can before it's too late.

Always remember that it is 1 day, 1 hour, or 1 minute at a time. The important part is cravings will get less and less intense, learn how to shift those cravings into something positive pull out your phone keep a picture of a loved one you are making proud.

I like the part about comparing hangovers to my current alcohol withdrawal. When I think about it, the hangovers were in fact worse. Then I’d drink again, and the hangover of course comes right back. Might as well ride out the withdrawals

So young and I’ve already fucked my life up, started smoking kush/ smokes and drinking at 14, 18 now, can’t find a job that will take me as I am, haven’t went a day without smoking weed since 14 I quit smokes around mid 2017 due to them making me blck out fairly often after smoking. But drinking. It’s a whole other thing. I’ve done lots of drugs but nothing grabs hold of you quiet like liquor does. It probably doesn’t sound like much to most ppl. But I’ve been looking for a passion and motivation for a while now but I can’t find anything, not to mention my girlfriend of 2 yrs leaving me a few months ago. That shit really weighs down on you. Now to think I’m at the easy parts of life.

so stopping drinking alcohol means a total ban on drinking forever? doesn't that mean that you actually have no control other than you've banned it I thought control was to get to the level of a balance or doesn't it work that way? once you become an alcoholic then there is no middle grounds ...

My biggest problem is I've attached all things I love doing with Alcohol. Watching TV shows and movies with alcohol. Creating music with alcohol, listening to music with alcohol. Basically everything I do at home I've attached alcohol with it. Removing its makes its harder because it feels like everything will be less fun. This is why I've struggled with letting go. I don't drink everyday, maybe twice to three times a week but I really do want to stop.

1. Please be aware if you are a prolonged and heavy drinker and if you feel you have a major alcohol problem. You may need help from your doctor medically - assisted detox because withdrawal can kill you . Do your research. My husband died at 41 due to being an alcoholic. If you do feel you have a major alcohol problem, withdrawal can lead to delirium tremens, confusion, severe shaking, hallucinations and high blood pressure. So please see your doctor for help. 2.If you feel you are just a heavy drinker I'm sure stopping drinking will be easier with out medication from your doctor. 3.Please don't be frightened of talking to someone doctor or a family member or friend that will help you. 4.Most alcoholics lie about the amount they are drinking. 5.Kevin I think your videos are great but I only wish you would inform people of the above.

My dad just got diagnosed with liver cancer. Had a operation 2 days ago where half his liver (left lobe) was cut out. He may or may not survive. But he looked so fucked yesterday tryibg to recover from operation. Im not saying it was just drinking that caused the cancer but i don't want to do it anymore. Day 3 for me but feeling great. The cravings are strong though. I have so much free time i need to start some boxing lessons or something and not lay around and think of alchohol. I will make it through though.

The reason why I drink is because when I drink I can feel things. It feels like I can actually be myself, when I drink my depression goes away and I can enjoy life again... FOOD has flavour, MUSIC is enjoyable again, VIDEO GAMES have become fun again, all my hobbies have become fun again. When I’m sober I become empty, I feel nothing.

how do you stop drinking without being obsessed with something? i managed to quit when i was unemployed and could focus on the gym (because my girlfriend supported me) but as a tradesman on the oilfield i feel my only option to not drinking is to take up smoking weed and roll the dice i dont get drug tested.

Day 72 here. I was a maybe 4 to 5 drinks a nite after work type. But partied hard on weekends for 40 years. Cant say it was hard. For 2 hours a nite id crave the shit out of it but id just go work out or clean house. Hardest thing for me is the social aspect. All my friends drink. My culture, blue collar workers, we drink few beers after work. But to go and drink water or decafe.. sucks. Still does. I love beer, but hated being out of shape with a gut coming on. Feeling like shit every morning. So I do get better sleep. My mind, Cant say ive had some huge revolution of clarity or anything. I did drop 20 lbs. Ate better, more rested, Seems to give other parts of body chance to heal.. ( former pro athlete have alot of busted shit, screws, plates etc etc. Biggest thing for me was to show myself I could do it. I do feel better. Better example for my grandson and my friend has cut way back since I stopped. But I miss it no doubt. From 15 to 55 I drank every nite almost. But got real bad last 5 years. Dad was a drunk. I didnt want to go there. More Pride I think then anything else. But 1 day at a time goals I set. Not 30. Even broke it down to 3 hrs I dont have to drink when i get home. So damn sure feel better physically and about myself I reckon. Its very doable. Not as hard as we think. You can do it!
