Even as a self-proclaimed maximalist, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to pare down and only surround myself with the things that bring me the most joy. It’s not a single piece of furniture, art or decor, but rather a collection of memories that are summoned by what I choose to furnish and decorate our home with 🥰 Tell me, what’s the one item in your home that brings you the most joy?
I'm a 61 year old artist and I only recently started putting my art in every single room and it feels so good. It makes me so happy to see my art working so well in my home. I love to decorate and now that I am retired I realized how much real artwork does for a room, it really makes it feel unique.
The built-in vanity and shelf unit in my bedroom is my very favorite piece. I designed it, and my husband built it for me. Everything else in the bedroom was selected to complement that piece.
So many designers (and real estate brokers) advocate removing personal items from public spaces. This video is so refreshing! I’m not into maximalism or clutter but I do love having meaningful objects and pictures around! Thank you!
Yes I agree! I'm a hobbyist photographer, and the thing people most often comment on in my large gallery wall of my two young boys. They walk in and exclaim "oh I love your gallery wall!" When displayed in a tasteful way, personal items look beautiful to you and your guests. I love going into someone's home and seeing their "story."
My husband and I have just moved away from our daughter and other family members due to my husbands work. Yesterday, I purchased some large floating picture shelves. I placed them on the wall facing our bed in the primary bedroom. Here I placed numerous framed family photos, including photos of our parents siblings and nieces and nephews and our beautiful daughter of course. It looks great but best of all, the first thing we see when we wake up, is our loved family members. When I look at these photos it brings happy memories and how lucky we are to have such love ❤️
.....That sounds lovely....however, I've read that having photos of your children in the bedroom is a " No- no " in the Bedroom, with Feng Shui...because you have children in a room that is supposed to be private and reserved for Rest. Relaxing and Romance. There is an area on the Map ( Feng Shui) for Family. And Children. Just providing information, people can choose what they wish to do. :)
I love it that you talked about displaying collections. I would love to see in depth videos about ways to tastefully display them. My plant collection is my favorite thing in my house and I’m always looking for new ways to show them off.
Loved this video! So often in design, we focus on perfection, but I love the "lived in" and "be yourself" side to design. After all, we are living in our homes, we should love it!
Bedrooms are the ultimate sanctuary since we spend so much time there. The best spot to prioritize since it’s where we get our energy to tackle the day
This video was different and great! What gives me joy at home, besides my family and cats is my art collection and plant collection. Both give the home a very cosy feeling.
My husband and I are building a She Shed for me. We are having fun building the Shed, designing the interior, picking paint colors, flooring, wall finishes, etc. It will be my "Happy" place to create and relax when we are done.
Design should be FUN!! You hear that a lot but it’s hard with a budget, construction, schedules, so many details 🤪 In the end, it’s going to be so worth it Margie!! Excited for you! 🙌
Decorating a home is a never ending process. I move things around a lot depending on my mood. Every item has a little story behind it, no matter how simple it is. memories are built into these all over my home and I love it.
✨🙏✨love that you are “ down to earth” and embrace Real Life and Living… appreciating how special our individual lives are and have that reflected in our homes..🌷 ✨🙏✨
Thank you Julie for sharing this video! I have a gallery wall of my grandson’s art work. Although he is only 7 I LOVE it It brings me so much joy. I believe it brings him joy as well.
Julie You have never ceased to amaze What a fun video... You have excelledy yourself For me funky is Floating shelves and how i decorated it... My own space with books nd solace You are right.. No job at home is finished.. Also you also nailed it when you said... Everything gets done except our own... Ours in the back burner... Due to work load and no deadlines.... We as u said are constantly evolving.. Superb video also showing your kids njoying gave so much joy😀😍😎😘
Hi Julie! I agree that the home including the yard should make you happy. Even if not the whole home at least part of it. And that has to be curated or thought about by the person who needs the joy. Even your husband and your children should have the right to curate their own spaces. This might not be what you or I want but it’s not our joy. It’s theirs. Own your joy ! I sure have seen you change over these last few years. From glam with big necklaces to elegant and desiring simple joys! Nice work!
The best feeling is carving out dedicated spaces for all my family members. They can feel my love 🥰 The costume jewelry will make a comeback. Once the girls are in middle school, watch out!! Mama’s gonna be in her best Iris Apfel era! 🤩😂
11:12 dear Julie, your home is dynamic, so don't worry if it's not "finished" . I just spent 5 weeks visiting in a very static home. My oldest friend expects and likes things to be static. But - it's not me. I did some reorganizing on paper to relieve the boredom/ activate some Chi. And moved the plants around. 😍
I love love this video, thanks so much. I think that I was waiting for this video , I need it after we recently moved from West New York area to Canyon Crest Riverside CA Iam trying to decorate my house but, I am missing myself on it and now with all you explained that we need spaces that give us joy I think Iam ready to continue my projects with a different view of things, things that we need in our life . Thanks Julie ❤
I love your ideas, greetings from Germany! And I love my chosen colors, limette green, ocean blue and white between, so refreshing, when I enter the door! Thanks for all your videos! I am a great fan of yours!
My plants makes my happy and my collection of Buddha statues. I am not Buddhist but for some whatever reason I love having them all around my house. I feel calm and peaceful whenever I look at them.
That’s the most important since it’s our North Star Becky! Understanding what we like and don’t like (as opposed to buying trendy items) will help guide our choices
I have a lot of real plants - mostly ferns - but I also have one small fake plant from Dollarama. It was meant to go to a friend of a friend who has no plant interest. No way was I going to plant a real plant just to be killed off ! So she rejected the whole thing, and I'm very fond of this small plastic clump of plastic leaves. 💚 And sometimes it gets watered by the plant sitter. Love your idea to decorate with sentimental pieces! 💚🇨🇦
Yes... Me too Colour great... It looks good on you Jk.. Nd you are looking good too... Congrats.. You have managed both kids and your profession well.. 😀😍
This video was amazing; the kids were so adorable. The level of beauty here is totally joyful. Can you post the link for that incredible multicolored sofa that was featured here? Just stunning and the happiest sofa I ever saw!!!!
LOL!! When you mentioned your kids at the 12 minute mark, and showed them all jumping around... until you said, "they can have friends over" I was thinking, "Oh my God, how many kids has she got?? Six? No wonder she hasn't finished... oh! Friends. Right. Whew!"
I never thought I understood the concept of keeping an item only if it brings “joy”. It’s a lamp. If it functions, I’m good to go. No “joy”. Just..it’s a lamp. Now, I’m beginning to understand. I have all along understood the meaning of joy, I just wasn’t letting myself have my own interpretation of joy. I don’t apply my joy to individual items. I apply it to the overall concept. For me, it’s more the opposite. If something doesn’t quite “fit in”. It’s more of looking around the room, and loosing comfort when, (coincidentally! Seriously, I just now realized this) I look at two lamps in my living room! (Must have been subconsciously!) Although I still really like them, they just irk me being in this space. The good news; I love lamp shopping! Just an aside; this video gave me joy! The selection of decorated rooms was perfect, but I especially loved the little glimpses of the children having fun. Your daughter hiding behind a big stuffed animal; all the little ones dancing with abandon, made me smile. Kids find such joy, in the tiniest of things. The old “I gave them a toy, and they played with the box!”, has proven true time and time again. It brings back the happy memory of my, then, five-year-old granddaughter spending an hour, trying to keep a plastic grocery bag aloft! She had such concentration on a plastic BAG! That video of her still brings me joy! Thanks, Julie and crew. I loved this video
Children are so pure indeed 🥹 I’ve been trying to find different ways to translate what design means to me for all the viewers out there. Less fluff, more feeling. Hope I’m on the right track Jeanne-Marie! Your feedback is so appreciated 🙏💖
I love my bedroom. I enjoy the dark moody color that I feel make it cozy. Others feel its dark and I have to many plants but plants make me happy and I have a green thumb, my plants are healthy looking. Thank you for this video 🙂
Excellent video Julie. A home should feel warm and welcoming to everyone who enters it. I have a few friends who’s home are so uptight, I walk in and look forward to leaving. I have always preferred the feel of a beautiful restaurant or hotel. Not one were you worry about every step you take. Thank you again for great advice. Take care. ❤
You really can “feel” people’s auras as you enter their personal domain. It’s so important for me to express myself through my space so our guests feel welcomed and inspired 🥰
My art collection. I would definitely grab as many pieces as I could if I had to rush out. It reminds of places I’ve visited, the talent of so many, boldness, culture.. definitely joy!
I love Hello Kitty and I have a shelf of collection items that friends and fam have given me over the years. Sentimental and super cute! It definitely puts a smile on my face😍
