I finally drive the double dually Mutt Truck down the road! For an 80 year old truck that was sitting around for decades, it did pretty well. The Chevrolet Stovebolt Six worked great, helped by the incredibly low gearing. There's a lot of potential in this rig! The question is, do I call it a 4x4 or 8x8?
I worked out the details of the wiring in a separate video, if you want to see more take a look at this: • DIY Wiring For Any Veh...

Have you considered putting electric assist steering from a 2009-2013 Toyota Corolla in this truck? It is a very overpowered unit for its application and worked great on my '47 Willys pickup. The woods are full of them so you should be able to find one cheap in a junk yard near you. Mine cost me $75.00.

I think I just figured out what the round plate is on the front bumper. Is there three holes in it? In the shape of a triangle? Place a American Signal Company 4 beam beacon on it. Amber in color. You said this was a bomb towing truck, and it clicked. It’s for the warning light while towing bombs. We called them bubble gum lights in the old fire trucks. Also, I’m sure this rig would also be used as a tug, possibly towing aircraft. The warning light on top of the cab might make it too tall going under the wings of the bomber aircraft. It would make sense to place it on the front bumper out of the view of the cab. If I’m wrong…. It was a damn good guess.

7:48 I believe those are convoy lights or blackout lights. They are used to limit the vehicles visibility when traveling at night or in a convoy.
@SeanMacLennan
@SeanMacLennan Год назад
Yup. There would be some white paint on the rear axle of the vehicle in front of you. You kept the light trained on the white stripe.
@SeanMacLennan
@SeanMacLennan Год назад
Yikes. I realized I confused the blackout lights with the convoy light. The little lights are the blackout lights. The one light on the driver side should have a shade and be the convoy light that shines on the white stripe.

The guage panel insert you have is the proper military one so you might have a original ww2 cab from some other chevy or gmc military truck from ww2. Some one might have just found the military guage panel insert they used as well but a lot of work unless you had it laying around and the original was destroyed. If it has military data plates on the dashboard or glove box it's almost certainly from some other military truck. Please keep the grill, it really does protect all the lights and radiator and it's original to the truck no matter what the cab came from. That was a air force truck and they used to be blue. I don't know if they were blue in the war but they were later so it may have been in service long enough to get a repaint. That extra light is the black out drive light and you can see the slot in the front glass to pop into the metal plate with the hood that made the light only put light down so you couldn't be seen from the air. The Germans used a really over engineered one on their vehicles. I found a much newer blackout light on a Vietnam era road grader I put on my 41 Power Wagon. Other than it being 24 volts it was pretty much identical to the old 6 volt one it should have had.

Hiya bud, well Its all looking great so far, so thank you for sharing with us all. That hidden blue paint, left me wondering If It was ever Royal Airforce Blue, perhaps being stationed In Canada at some point> but stranger things are found eh... As the old leaf suspension springs have years of dirt and rust in them limiting their ability to slide over each other reminded me of some years ago, I used to service an old Landrover, its leaf springs were so rusted and dirt filled they were like welded together, so the time consuming of taking them off the truck, jet washing them to the death between each leaf spring, dried them with compressed air, used a slim metal wedge to open the gap one leaf a time, greased in between the leaf springs, then wrapped the entire leaf spring in hessian sacking, heavily greased held on with baling wire, refitted back to the truck, made it ride like a new truck again..No more bouncing down the road..Anyway, thanks for the video, Ian. UK.

It worked good on its maiden voyage. all the lights worked perfectly, and the engine sounds good and the brakes worked very well. I would guess that transmission is not synchronized? and it would ride a little better with some new tires. watch out it might turn into a daily driver. that windshield should be reasonably priced being flat glass. but installing it into that frame might be a little bit of a challenge. and some gauge's and it would a finished product.
@LowBuckGarage
@LowBuckGarage Год назад
You are correct, the transmission is not synchronized in any gear. I've got a learning curve on that. I just started installing gauges today...

James, the medium light on the left front fender is the "Black-Out" Drive Light. When You took it apart and noticed the crimped edge, the mirror with bulb, glass cover and "eyebrow" were all one unit crimped together. The eyebrow covered most of the light except for a small slit at the top under the Brow. What You have done with this old truck is great. Keep up the great work. Here is the link to my video for the Knuckle Seal replacement, when You get to that point. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-afoS8gW6tGI.html.

You can get conversion kits with replaceable bulbs for those sealed beams, but if it's still easy (and cheap) to find sealed beams of that size there I don't think it's worth it, with sealed beams you always have a shiny reflector. There are also sealed LED conversion lamps but sometimes sealed only means it cannot be repaired and can end full of water.
