I can legit smell these pictures. Food court food, scented candles, lots of leather, the water fountains, cigarette smoke, the carpet, cheap cologne... yeah. I was a child of the 80’s.
Oh, I am not sad about where the world is going. I liked my life then ( there was a lot of fun to had, ha ha), and I love my life now because I am doing now what I always wanted to do then (and did not know how to start). PCs and electronics got smaller, too, and I have all of the music I every wanted to buy at my fingertips: that is a win for me. 😁
Can’t forget who it was that changed the world. If your generation hadn’t been so obsessed with technology we wouldn’t be here. Kids today have to deal with a world that was forever changed by smartphones and social media. Things that were invented by older people
@@davidroache8655 yes! So much imagination to our fashion. Even when it was a “miss.” I can remember planning for days what I was going to wear on the weekend - whether it was date night, a trip to the mall to hang out with my best friends, or to the roller rink, or maybe to the drive in restaurant for the car show. We spent hours perfecting our hair and makeup. Our clothes were just right. And we went out snd met other kids from out in the county or other high schools that would come to the mall just to hook up and hang out. I can remember meeting boys that lived 45 minutes away and my parents having a fit because he was “long distance.” 🤣🤣
Please take me back to the 1980s! Things made sense in those days. Now, I don't understand anything! So glad to be an 80s kid! The 80s decade was the best!
I hear ya, I'd kill for a chance to stand in one of those massive, beautiful arcades and catcalls pretty girls until one of them came over to me at the game I'm playing and gave me her number. I wouldn't even mind getting slapped by one or two of them before the right one came along.
Agreed the 80s had its issues but nothing near what we have today I mean compare the two decades and it’s like night and day someone needs to build a time machine lol If it were possible to go back to the 80s and just hang out there for as long as you want I don’t believe any of us will come back to this decade
I don’t know what’s worse, the people who grew up in such a lovely time and now have to witness the depressing reality of 2021, or the people who have to grow up in this reality.
Great point. Not an easy answer thought. 1) Those who grew up in this era and have to witness it now....have the benefit of at least experiencing it first hand, and have memories to look back at. While it may be sad that it is gone, at least they have something to hold onto. 2) Those who grow up now and have never experienced it, don't feel bad, as they don't know what they missed. So it may not hurt as much. But they are looking back at something that they will never get to experience. Overall -- I don't know which is really worse.
I’m 29 and fortunate I got to grow up in the 90’s and 00’s but unfortunate to have to transition into the real world during times like these. While not everything is bad today I feel that this world needs a miracle to save it from the downward spiral it’s going.
@@scottlewis8386 Thank you! I made this video to bring back memories for those who enjoyed this era. I tried to simulate a virtual 80s mall time machine.
People socializing, enjoying each other's company, seeing and touching the things you buy. Not the isolated world of living on your computer or cellphone.
@@TheDonovanu Of course it was. Every once in a while a cruise ship would have an outbreak... nothing much to worry about, except diarrhea. Nothing has changed, except it's being used as a political football by a few power-hungry megalomaniacs.
You know David,I don't see what your problem is with how other people choose to live their lives. No one is forcing you to be on a phone, only how you live your life should matter to you.
@@petitcactusamer I didn't make a judgement or say that I had a problem with how people choose to live. It was sn observation and I think an accurate one that people are choosing to spend more time in the homes instead of interacting with others. Perhaps people today enjoy being isolated from others more than they did during this time. As far as I'm concerned people can remain at home and never leave.
@@apollonat3329 Because a big part of people wanting to travel back in time to the 80s is not just because of the fun style music etc It's also because their was no social media internet smartphones etc
This was the place to be on a cold and snowy Saturday. All day walking in and out of the stores. Arcade food chains everywhere and the movies. Best times of my teenage years.
Such a better time of life. People were far less jaded and happy with what they had. Social media and 24 hour news was when it started to go downhill in my opinion.
@@mraj9002 I was born in the 50s. I remember the Cuban Missile crisis. When they thought that Cuba might nuke US. I remember when they had shelters for people to go into. Yep. The fear of nuclear war happened even in my childhood.
Same but I do remember there being a difference in the times, just in the air like a certain limited magic to it all and they are sadly missed for me too
I feel that way too, it was just life, normality, now when I look back I think "how I wish I could go back in time." I would trade cell phones, social media, and all the fancy electronics of today, to go back to those days."
Growing up in the late 70s and 80s was such a good time. People actually interacted with each other before cell phones. Thanks for posting this. Brings back good memories.
Teddy Jam I’m so jealous of all of you in the comments. I’m Gen Z and I love dressing 80's. I wish I could go back and relive it-even if I could only go until dinner time every day.
Teddy Jam yep, mine too! I wish I could just time travel back to experience it! This is why I love thrift shopping, the clothes are pretty nice in themselves.
I was born in 1971, and I wouldn't trade growing up in the 70s and 80s for anything in the world. It was so much fun. I loved the music, the style, all of it. It's crazy to think how much things have changed since then. It really was an amazing time!
Born in 1976, so I consider myself more growing up 80s and 90s, but I don't completely disregard the 70s. Yeah these times were cool. Though honestly, I prefer the technology of today. Even as a kid, I got frustrated with the clunky tech of the late 70s, 80s, 90s.
Yes Jocelyn, I remember going to the skating rink at least once every weekend. My parents would drop me off. I was a kid. I also loved to go to the mall ever so often. No cell phones. Me and my preteen 10, 11, year old friends were too busy trying to socialize and looking forward to becoming teenagers in the late 80s early 90s.
The skating rink was my favorite thing ever. We had all night skates on Friday and Saturday and it was so much fun! If I tried to skate all night now, or even skate at all, for that matter, I'd probably die. Lol
lol. I forgot about the skating rink. Everybody checking each other out. Beach or lake is not the same, people just sit or eat. Haven't been to either in a while. Thanks!
0:46. Oh man a record store! I used to love walking up and down the aisles looking at the album covers. It’s a bit disturbing that this will never happen again
There’s still some around but it won’t be the same with all the rich kids making it a trend & selling online for so much more. Oh wait they even do that with goodwill etc.
I really miss those days. The air was more fresh the people were more nicer and friendly and laid back the food was bigger and tasted 5 times better. People we're bubbly and spontaneous
As soon as the music started I was traveling back to my teens. I remember my friends and I said back in the day how lame it was growing up in the 80's. Stupid kids lol. In 2021 all of us agree how lucky we were to be teens in the 80's. We miss the simpler times. The USA could use a little 80's life return these days.
Gen X'ers, we are soooo lucky! Born in the late 60's and 70's, a kid in the 80's, and a teenager in the 90's. Would not trade that for the entire solar system or galaxy! But, for some reason no one can explain, we had frozen chocolate dipped bananas at the mall! Then one day they disappeared. I think the world has been downhill from there.
I agree.. So glad I grew up then..I was born in 1980 I was a kid through the 80s and teen in the 90s..wouldn't trade it for anything .. Wish we could go back to that time
Same! We are the same age. I thought at the store the girls owned on Facts of Life (“Over Our Heads”) would have been my favorite store in real life. There was a similar store at City Center in Downtown Minneapolis
I was 15 with every Tiger beat magazine poster nicely arranged all around my room. I wanted to dress like Boy George and Madonna. I would break dance in the garage with brother and neighborhood friends. My best cousin who was just 6 months younger than me, she was still alive...I should not have come to this video because now I am depressed when before I was so happy to view it.
I was in HS in the early 80's What a great era...the music...the clothes...the hair. Loved going shopping and hanging out with friends at the mall. Glad I had the chance to experience all of that. Sad that has gone away never to return.
The days I had a little cash to eat in the food court were some of the best days of my life. Eating something from Orange Julius and watching all the cute girls walk by just trying to catch eye contact with the one I really liked. LOL that's the 80's!
I'm the same age. Our generation was perhaps the last that truly appreciated the mall experience. They started their decline in about our early twenties.
@@SaritaLovesLiving this generation will never understand the joy of playing arcade games and hoping to see you crush at the mall..all while eating a corndog.
Yes I am a 77 baby myself and know exactly what you’re talking about by a favor only possible to go back and just stay there I would do it in a split second
I started working in the malls when I was 18 in 1986. So much fun for a young person! I finally left retail in 2009, I was ready. So many great memories of malls in the 80’s!
@@ravvyj I worked at Lerner (it became Lerner New York and then New York and Company, was owned by The Limited Inc at one point) from 1986 until 1997. Three different locations in sales and then management. I was an Estée Lauder counter manager at Macy’s from 1997 until 2006, and then worked at a high end jeweler from 2006 until 2009.
I was born in ‘03 and I feel like my age group was the last to experience anything remotely like this. Believe it or not, I still remember a time where there was more to life than social media/cell phones.
I was 17 in 78... There was a huge mall complex a few towns over. We went every weekend...it was very peaceful ..lots of fun... usually had a nice lunch somewhere...bought one or two things....went home.
We actually dressed up, to shop. Or to catch a guys eye. People were mostly kind and respectful. I once went to my mall pictured here,Eastridge mall, San Jose, Ca. Wearing a new nice summer dress, and newly engaged, some young guys came my way and were going to flirt but saw my ring and one of the guys told his friends in the group. "Oh, no she's engaged already, leave her alone" and they kept on there way, without approaching me. That was classy and I never forgot that. I was in my late 20s. Good memories, you brought. People wearing clothes.🤣
I used to go shopping during clearance times, at Leed's shoe store, and Kinney's I bought me 2 pairs of shoes 1 pair $2,and another for $3. Dress shoes at that. That was in the early 80s. Great prices.
When I was in my early 20s, I met a gorgeous girl from Spain in a really nice mall in Atlanta Ga. I could speak Spanish well so we had a nice chat. When I asked her for her phone number, that’s when she showed me her wedding ring....on her RIGHT hand. I learned that day that there are many countries that wear wedding rings on the right hand.
1987 was a GREAT year to graduate, But I didn't get my first job until a month before graduation, in Rides, at an Amusement Park, MOST FUN JOB I EVER HAD, TO THIS DAY.
87 here also! That had to be an awesome day when you got a job at the mall. I didn't have a car then so I had to work at the place I could ride my bike to. Washing dishes in a Chinese restaurant didn't have the glamour like working in the mall. LOL
@@bigcav925 nice! IKR malls now arnt as good as they used to be. I went to this one mall in port Huron Michigan once and it’s sad to see there is only one department store when there used to be 5 back in the 80’s 90’s and 2000’s
I miss the pre computer days. Life was more simple but we have an amazing amount of information for the average person these days. Sorry you missed out ✌️
We didnt have all that anxiety of today's teen years. Life was simpler. We met friends at the mall. Went on a first date. Checked out a movie with our biggest concerns being beating that high score or showing off our new skateboard, hoping that popular guy/girl likes us or getting our favorite treat. Today's teens seem to worry about more adult things beyond their years like politics and trending offensive items from the past. We just enjoyed life.
I think you are correct! No era has matched the 80s as of yet. The 90s still had some of the 80s in it, but was winding out. 80s pretty much disappeared around 94/95.
We are not living. Forced online shopping is not living. Not being able to go to a damn store in the world after 11pm is not living. Constantly worrying about what words you are allowed to say as if you are a small child is not living.
You know what else blew my mind a couple of months ago... I was on an airplane flying back home... I wanted to buy a soda and snack they would not accept cash on the plane only debit or credit card... Only time I've heard of that
As a kid born in the 2000's, it's been a dream of mine to be born in the 70s or 80s, it's the year I've always wanted to experience. I feel so bad I missed out
Born in early 60s. I loved the 70s & 80s. No cells. Most people had the predecessor the pager. Only thing about a pager is the need for a pay phone to call people back. Most people were relaxed and happy 😊.
I hate them myself. I don't even own one and never will...especially since you can be tracked with one no matter if the tracking function is shut off. Every time you connect to a new tower, they record the signal key that's particular to your phone. Edit: In fact, as an example, every person who took part in the BLM demonstrations/riots and had a phone on them was logged in by the FBI plane that was circling overhead. They're now likely marked as potential domestic terrorists.
If I could catch a trip in a time machine, I think I would travel back in time and spend the rest of my days hanging out in the 1980’s. The world today has gone crazy!
@@ES11777 nothing to do with reusable water bottles or environment. Back in the day you only saw people with water bottles while playing sports. I worked at JC Penny's at Bria Woods Mall in Ann Arbor Michigan in 89 to 90 it was a lot fun. I would see people that I knew when I would go out into the mall on my lunch break 🙂 miss those days life was simple.
It was a really great era. Loud music playing in all the hip clothing stores. Lots of teens all over the place. It was basically a daytime nightclub in many aspects. But the 90s were still quite good too. Everything really changed when people starting shopping heavily online.

Anytime! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Made it worthwhile to make this. If you enjoyed it that much, my goal was accomplished. To make an 80s mall time machine.
It's striking how different people could look. Most of them were fairly trim. I remember when obesity used to be uncommon. People's clothes were different then as well: generally more put together, shirts were more likely to be tucked in, people actually got hairdos, and clothing *fit.* Now women's clothes look two sizes too small and men wear tents and don't know how to groom themselves half the time. People were more likely to dress up in the '80s as well. The '90s really killed that. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
The 90s introduced casual Friday’s and laidback attitudes with the grunge movement. The 80s was more about conservatism, power dressing, and getting ahead in the corporate world. Not to mention the amount of money people spent on Aquanet and Dippity Doo.
I remember dressing like my high school friend and meeting her at Trumbull Mall in Trumbull, Connecticut to see "Dirty Dancing". We swooned over Patrick Swayze. 🥰 My first job at the mall was at Thom McChan Shoes. I remember putting a ton of cute summer clothes on lay-a-way at Contempo Casuals. I miss those days. 😔
Hey great to see someone mention Trumbull mall! I work there. I was born in the late 80s, my sister born in 1980. So we all lived at the mall. I'll need therapy if it closes 😂
If you are looking to physically revisit this feeling of nostalgia, support small local businesses in small towns. Many are niche and haven’t had modern aesthetic updates, like family-owned ones trying to keep the dream alive. Especially some local Record, Comic book, Clothing, Café or Coffee shops. I’m from Ohio I have noticed there’s quite a few around the state still. Pretty cool when you step into one say in a place like Yellow Springs, Clifton or Pleasant Ridge. The last 70’s-80’s built mall? (aesthetically Un-renovated) I went to was very small, in the middle-of-everything downtown Gatlinburg, Tn. It had a few niche shops. May still be there, actually.

I never thought I was going to end up missing the 80’s and the ability to just hang out and walk around a mall like this. How sad that kids and families really don’t have this anymore
Notice a few things, no cell phones, people interacting with one another in person, a functioning economy, people laughing, having fun, much more simplistic times but so much better times than today.
Oh the 80's.. ❤ Rad hair, rad clothes! We didn't have a Mall in my small hometown, had to drive an hour away but the anticipation and excitement was well worth it! We would leave early on a Saturday.. shopping, eating, checking out the cute boy's lol then watch a movie. We went every other Saturday and when we didn't it was going to the skating rink. We did have that. Friday's were reserved for football game's and cruising. The music .. oh the music, nothing will ever compare. To all the Dude's & Dudettes... Rock On! 🤘
I miss those days so much. I was born in 77 but I remember and love all the music, records, 8 tracks, cassettes, VHS, indoor malls, break dancing, riding bikes everywhere, arcades, Atari, punk rock, early rap, new wave, the movies. I wish I could share that time period with my son. Same with the 90s.
I was a senior in high school in 1984. This slide show exactly matches my memories of the malls in the ‘80s. The food courts were the social epicenters while the music stores were where you hung out to pick up girls. The arcades were where you would find all the nerds and the movie theaters were where you would see all of the teenage couples. Very cool times for me. I feel sorry for today’s teenagers.
The malls were SO busy where I grew up in the San Fernando Valley... Ours was the Northridge Fashion Mall and was fun but when I got old enough to go out on my own I used to go over to The Beverly Collection in Beverly Hills and mentally buy everything that I couldn't afford in reality!! The Beverly Center and Melrose were happening too back in those days!! It was such a fun, creative and colorful time to live back then.. especially being young.
Remember The Fallbrook Mall in Canoga Park? I used to work at Sears there ...for 7.5 years! I worked at the Northridge Mall too, at Bullocks. And yes, The Beverly Center was like a Hollywood set to me, being from The Valley..🥰
Then, the DemocRATS took over in California and DESTROYED that once beautiful state. Now, they are all fleeing to Texas and Colorado and destroying those states. The death of America has more to do with DemocRATS and less to do with Amazon or cell phones!!!!
@@tigeroll I worked at the Galleria part time as my second job one Christmas.. That was another place I loved hanging out! I worked there and loved it! They had a live DJ booth, a video wall hehind the counter and was one of the coolest places to shop for young people in the 80s..
I graduated in 1987. I'm now 53 years old and a grandfather of 8. Hey kids of today you might think you've got it good?! You should live through a week in the '80's. The music, the clothes, the movies, the hair, MTV when it was Music Television, videos of your favorite bands. It changed everything. That decade gave me some of the best memories that anyone could have. I would go back in a heartbeat, as long as I could meet my wife. People that didn't grow up in that decade, will never understand, and that sucks for them. People were famous for being talented or smart, not being famous for being famous. Take me back, that was heaven to me. And if I die and go to heaven, I hope I have a choice as the '80s for mine, same friends, hair, movies. I'll always be kind of sad that I can't go back!!!
I loved shopping at the mall in the 80s! I lived in the record store! Did anyone else make a music video? I had the huge hair, jean jacket with all the pins, stonewashed ripped jeans with the rock tshirts & either the keds or high top reeboks😂🤣
The 90s were my teen mall hangout years. The arcades, record stores, food court and trying to get girls numbers. Such great memories!! Its sad to see many malls are dead or on their last leg.
Being a kid in the 80s was SO amazing, I thought all of the teenagers were so cool with their big hair and the crazy fashion! Man I miss those days soooo much. I wish I could have been a teenager in the 80s as most of my teen years were the early 90s which I loved too but the 80s seemed so incredibly magical to me as a kid.
