Video documentary of our bikepacking trip through the upper Midwest, mostly along the Mississippi River. It was a beautiful one-way ride from St. Louis Missouri to Duluth Minnesota. Much of the route followed Mississippi River Road in Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota but we also used part of the Adventure Cycling Association (ACA) Great Rivers South (section 1) maps and route, and the Northern Tier (section 7). See links for ACA route information and maps...
www.adventurec...
More details about the route (but still somewhat general)...
Missouri:
- Depart metro St Louis through Creve Coeur County Park
- Cross Missouri River on the Page Ave (Hwy 364) bicycle bridge
- Katy Trail (crushed/packed lime surface) to St. Charles, MO
Illinois:
- Cross Mississippi River via Golden Eagle Ferry into Calhoun County, IL
- Camp at McCully Heritage Project north of Brussels IL
- Mississippi River Road in Illinois north to Quincy IL
- Camp at Driftwood Campground & RV Park (northern edge of Quincy)
- Miscellaneous roads along Mississippi and away from the river, through Warsaw, Nauvoo, and Dallas City
Iowa:
- Cross Mississippi River on bridge into Burlington, IA (hotel overnight due to storms)
- North on Mississippi River Road and other rural roads to Muscatine, IA (B&B overnight due to storms)
- Straight north from Muscatine to Monticello IA for hotel overnight (away from river, trying to shortcut the eastern bend in the river to shorten the route and avoid more storms)
- Rural roads to Guttenberg (note this is not on the ACA route but was suggested by a local as a better route than the ACA route... it was a good choice!)
- North along river to Pikes Peak State Park, where we were going to camp but the campground was closed for reconstruction. Instead, we continued a few more miles north to McGregor to stay in a B&B.
- Continued north along west side of Mississippi River into Minnesota
Minnesota:
- North through La Crescent, MN to Great River Bluffs State Park - bicycle campground is right along the roadway (hwy 14) and does not require entry in to main park (very primitive self-serve camping, but we had the whole place to ourselves). This was very fortunate to find, as all campgrounds were filled (it was Memorial Day weekend).
- Continued along the river (northwest-ish) to Winona MN, crossed river bridge into Wisconsin
Wisconsin:
- Followed river road north to Bay City, camped in city park (main campground was full but walk-in tent sites were available)
- North to eventually abandon following the Mississippi River and start following the St. Croix river (which continues as the boarder between Wisconsin and Minnesota)
- Stop to visit friends in Hudson WI, before crossing river bridge in Hudson to re-enter Minnesota (separated bike lane on Interstate 94 bridge)
Minnesota (again):
- North in Minnesota to Stillwater
- Northwest (leaving river) on Brown's Creek State Trail (bike path)
- Miscellaneous roads, past White Bear Lake, to Rice Creek Park Campground (near Centerville MN)
- North on mix of dedicated bike path (Hardwood Trail, Sunrise Prairie Trail) and roads, through Wyoming, Rush City, etc. to Hinckley (road portions were flat, boring, and somewhat heavy traffic but not unsafe)
- Hinckley trailhead for William Munger State Trail (bike path)
- Munger trail to Duluth, with stop partway for overnight camping in General Andrews State Forest (short ride from Munger Trail)
- Miscellaneous roads/streets through town to get to Lake Superior

Such a fun and wonderful message to receive! Best wishes for a beautify life together on your tandem. Take your time, start small and easy, and always remember that fun is the main objective. There is a saying about tandems... they will fast forward your relationship by 10 years. In other words, a good relationship will grow stronger and more beautiful very quickly, as you learn to communicate more, be respectful of each other, and work together as a team. On the other hand, for relationships that are not build on good foundations, trouble will also develop more quickly. By the tone of your message, I think you are going to grow strong together!

Great video - my wife and I have been tandem cycling since 30 years, longer tours mainly in Germany and partly with our two children then using two tandems - continue to have fun!

Thank you for your comments and best wishes for ongoing tandem adventures! We've meet others who use two tandems for a family of four. What a wonderful thing!

Averaged 72 / day. Great job. You both looked like you were working well with in your fitness level. That makes it fun.

Much appreciate the comments! Tandems flow beautifully when both riders have similar fitness/effort. As captain, I've given rides to other "stokers" and it doesn't always feel so smooth. Fortunate to have a wife who is a great stoker!

Thank you for your comments, Iowa Lady! We were astounded by the cycling-friendly nature of Iowa and by the beauty of the Mississippi River up there in the Iowa/Wisconsin/Minnesota region!

Nice! Your trip looked amazing! I think I would’ve waited till June. It’s all about the journey & who your with!

Thank you, for your comments and thoughts, Geta! The ulterior reason for starting in May was to leave town immediately after my spring teaching contract ended (it ensured that I stopped working). Of course, St. Louis get's pretty hot in June and wanted to avoid that too. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Brilliant! So glad to see you both having a great adventure, keep it going! BTW, we were near there in July/Aug, we love the driftless area.

Thanks so much for your comments, Connie! Great to hear that you know about the driftless area and love it! Maybe you were padding in the Upper Mississippi National Fish and Wildlife Refuge? FYI, I truly enjoy your videos on nature photography - often wish I could better use your photography insights but I'm still trying to keep my camera equipment small and light, which is limiting.

Thanks for taking the time to make the video. My wife and I rode a Santana Sovereign at one point but now have a Co-Motion. This year we plan to ride down the Pacific Coast from Victoria BC to San Diego, and are contemplating then turning left to ride the Southern Tier to Florida during Nov. and Dec. What are your thoughts about riding the Southern Tier at that time?
@thebikeweiss
@thebikeweiss 5 месяцев назад
So glad you enjoyed the video! Best wishes for your tandem adventure down the Pacific Coast! If time, resources, and energy allow for it, for sure the Southern Tier would be a great move. Firstly, I think its always good to take on these adventures now and whenever possible; we never know what tomorrow will bring to our lives. Secondly, although we've never ridden the Southern Tier, it seems like an ideal time to do it, given that weather can be oppressively hot during other times of the year. You should have predominantly west winds to help you along (I assume!). And, you'll also be arriving in the Gulf of Mexico area after hurricane season has died down (we have friends near the Everglades of Florida who advised us to also avoid November in Florida due to hurricane risk). Happy Adventures!!!

@@thebikeweiss thanks for the reply. We have discussed your response, reviewed distances, evaluated our interest in living on the road for that long, etc. The verdict? We still want to add the Southern Tier to this trip, for the very reasons you mention. I thought St. Louis was close to the Southern Tier, but have just checked and see how far north you are. As a Canadian I need to check because almost all cities are 'way South' from our perspective. Happy riding.

Oh how I love when the algo makes such a tremendous recommendation, TY for sharing. Quick couple of questions: what is the tan chamois glove looking things wrapped around drivers handlebar? Do you have a GPX file for your route? Sure looked awesome!
@thebikeweiss
@thebikeweiss Год назад
So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for your comments! The tan/orange things on the captain's handlebars are called Cinelli Grippo. They're designed for resting forearms on the tops of drop bars to mimic an aerobar position (without actually having an aerobar attached) but I often use them for extra padding under the hands. I don't think they make them anymore but some old stock may be available or you could DIY something with pipe insulation, etc.. Regarding gpx file, I don't have one... sorry! But I'd be happy to add a bit more detailed description of the route to the video description (if you are interested, let me know).
