The story of the one album wonder: Glass Tiger The Thin Red Line that had 3 top 40 hits. In the past we’ve talked about those rare hit songs that have been Lightening in a bottle. Where an artist or band releases a song that rips up the charts and shakes the earth for a time and then never rises to those levels again… Sometimes we cover An album that has multiple hit singles and rockets up the charts and then the artist never reaches those heights again? Up next lead singer Alan Frew and keyboardist Sam Reid from the canadian synth pop warriors, Glass Tiger tell the story of a moment where they were all the rage in mainstream music with #2 hit Don’t Forget Me When I’m Gone and #6 hit Someday as well as the top 40 anthem I will Be there!

You’ll love this channel…Make sure to subscribe below right now and click the bell to get the stories straight from the artists about the greatest ones…
It’s time for another edition of our series BottleD Lightening where we break down the history of a beloved one hit extravaganza that took over our culture for a time .. but this time we are going to delve into an album that had multiple hits and then disappeared … Let’s jump into the time machine and set the circuits for the year 1986. Where a Canadian band with a Scottish singer released an album that mixed Pop Rock and New Wave synth encased in a several catchy singles that took them to the top of the charts and got them nominated for a grammy for best new artist. I’m talking about Glass Tiger.
Don’t Forget Me When I’m Gone, partly inspired by Simple Minds and Tears for Fears would go all the way to #2 with it’s singalong chorus and then the emotional heartbreaker Someday would got to #7 in early 1987 followed by a third top 40 hit the anthem I Will Be there. This band was riding high in 86 and 87. The album these song came from The Thin Red Line was selling as well, it went gold here in the US and it went four times platinum in their native country Canada. They had fellow canadian Brian Adams backing them up on Don’t Forget Me When I’m Gone due to his longtime musical partner Jim Vallance cowriting and producing on this iconic 80s record. They also killed it at the Canadian Juno Awards winning 5 over a two year period including best album and best single. Everything was breaking right for this band.
They got their second album out by 1988 called Diamond Sun .. Their first single I’m still searching was promising but stalled at #31 and they never had another hit in the US. Up next Scotland born singer songwriter Alan Frew and keyboardist songwriter Sam Reid tell the stories behind their big 3 hits from the album and how they conquered the charts. As we go into this interview I want to thank our sponsor Zenni Eyewear. Since Zenni has been our sponsor i’ve received so many comments from our viewers who have loved their glasses and especially the features like antifog antiglare and Blue Blokz. These guys are the real deal. Go to Zenni .com now to get board. Here is Glass Tiger.

As an young American adult growing up in the modern generation, i have to say i'd rather listen to music from bands like glass tiger vs any modern music. "someday" "thin red line" "don't forget me when im gone" and "Dimond sun" are some of the songs i have on my many playlists of wonderful 60's, 70's, 80's, etc music. Alan, if you ever read this i want to say thank you for your music and incredible singing. Your music remains to have a lasting impact on people.

Thin Red Line is a jewel of a debut record- not a bad track on the album! One of my first cassettes I owned, it was also the first 80s concert I went to at age 9. These songs still hold up nearly 40 years later with the non-singles as good or better than the top hits. A masterpiece.

In Canada there is a law that radio stations have to play a certain percentage of music created by Canadians. I found out about this because one of my favorite '80s synth pop groups, Kon Kan, named themselves that as a play on the term "Can Con", the Canadian radio regulation that states radio stations must play Canadian artists at least 30% of the time.

One of the reasons I am attracted to this channel is to go back in time to a time that was care free and wonderful for me. In these insane times I can be transported back to happiness. It saddens me to watch the old 80s music videos, knowing how it felt back then. Yep, if Putin goes mad and launches his nukes at NATO and the West, we’re all screwed. There will be mass starvation due to disruption of the food supply and nuclear winter. It will be the end of the world. But, Australia, Brazil, and Argentina might be better off being that they won’t be the targets of Putin and maybe Kim Jong Un. Those nuts hate the US. Does Canada and the UK have nukes? Putin does not care about human life. He is bombing Ukraine and killing innocent people, he could do the same to us in the US with ICBM’s.

'Looking at a Picture', 'You're What I Look For', 'Closer To You' and 'Thin Red Line' are just as good as the 3 radio hits. Huge fan of Canadian artists & bands, espesh those who never released anything in the US or not huge...Haywire got screwed, one of the best male singers in Paul MacAusland...I found out that Chrysalis wanted to sign the band for outside Canada but Attic made it impossible, asking for too much money to license em...they coulda been huge...big HMS fan, Spoons, Luba, Sass Jordan, the Jitters, Lisa Dalbello (who sang those amazing female harmonies on the Glass Tiger records, like that searing performance on "Watching Worlds Crumble"...their 3rd album, 1990's "Simple Mission" though, was the best album I heard them do, a very powerpop album along the lines of Cheap Trick, produced by Tom Werman who did some of the best early Cheap Trick albums, and "Animal Heart" coulda easily been a Top 10, 5 or even a #1 smash in the US but never got the chance as no US release... Capitol/EMI pulled the plug mysteriously in the US market, killing their career here... shame, SUCH a killer album!!

I never considered Glass Tiger "ballad rockers" no...for me, Canadian artists/bands had a certain distinct sound that is tough to put your finger on to describe...and GT are one of those key bands...but I thought they got better with each album...I did love TRL, but the first single was really the Celtic-rocking title track, which was serviced to rock radio, prob to build credibility & buzz, THEN they released "Don't Forget Me" to Top 40 and it worked...but I have to say "Diamond Sun" is a better record & masterpiece, and then 3rd album, 1990's "Simple Mission" was their best I've heard but never came out in the US strangely...it was a hard-edged powerpop record that oozed Cheap Trick, was also produced by Tom Werman who produced some of CT's best earlier albums..."Animal Heart" shoulda been a US smash, killer hooks, chorus, vocals, performance...a lost classic really...and Rod Stewart duets with Alan on "My Town", great song...the Chieftains too on "My Song" on "Diamond Sun"...and key female backing vocals on many of their songs by a fave of mine, Lisa Dalbello!!

As a Canadian who lives relatively local to where Glass Tiger is from, I can not emphasize how huge that first album and those singles were around here. Initially the single for Don’t Forget Me… was released in January of 1986 a few weeks ahead of the full album release in February and immediately started gaining traction in the province and then nation wide on top 40 radio. I assume as part of their initial assault, their management booked them at a local summer free music festival to help push the band along. Turns out it was not needed because by the time of their festival appearance that July, the single and the album had gone nuclear on Canadian top 40 radio, making that appearance at this free music festival bedlam, with news reports at the time likening it to Beatlemania levels of insanity with young girls screaming and an absolutely unheard of attendance and out of control crowd for this music festival of usually up and coming, mid-tier, and nostalgia acts.

I used to always say that I would thrilled to be a one hit wonder. I mean by that that I think most artists who have talent with the right circumstances could get one hit which is a great achievement. Having multiple hit albums means you have a lot more gas in the tank than 99.9% of the artistic humanity. What I am saying is that Glass Tiger had great hits but maybe they said all they had to say with what was released and I am saying that with all sincerity and 100% respect for this great band. The song "Thin Red Line" was also a hit in Canada, and their follow-up album did quite well commercially. But what I found with multiple Canadian bands in the 80s and early 90s including Glass Tiger is that they would start out with one sound, experience some success, change their sound to try to keep up with the times (or become even more commercial), and become less distinct, less successful artistically, while commercially maybe running on fumes and Canadian Content regulations as just another watered-down sound. Not surprising the US market will generally not care any more. For example, Platinum Blonde, The Grapes of Wrath, The Spoons, etc, seemed to drop the new wave elements that gave them some edge and went more pop. There's a reason Crystal Castles / Robert Smith covered Platinum Blonde's "Not in Love", but not later work like "Fire". The Grapes of Wrath had the additional deficit of losing their best songwriter (Kevin Kane) over disagreements over direction (with the rest going more for pop). The Northern Pikes ironically become less grungy just before grunge took off. Treble Charger lost everything that was interesting about them when they fired Morris Palter, and Greig Nori pushed them away from songs like "Red" in favour of commercial pop (pushing Bill Priddle more and more to the background, before Greig found producing lame bands like Sum 41 to be even more financially rewarding). That gave them some temporary success, but how many remember them now? (I do still love early songs like "Red" though). The most successful Canadian bands / musical artists are, of course, those who stuck to their artistic guns.

@@CreateAndPlayWithRenee I always give MuchMusic, during their peak in the 80s/90s, a lot of credit for promoting Canadian bands like that. Before they came about, even Rush couldn't break into Canadian charts until they started getting played on US radio in Cleveland. I think MuchMusic did a hell of a lot to promote a sense of a Canadian identity for my generation, giving exposure to bands from coast to coast without them having to break into the US market. It certainly made me feel more connected to fellow Canadians in distant places like BC and Newfoundland. I still don't get, e.g., why The Hip wasn't much bigger in the US, but I understand how they made it big in Canada with that forum.

I think it might be a bit of a stretch to say that. I mean, a shuffle beat is just a shuffle beat. Plenty of songs use them. It's true that some shuffles have influenced others. For example Pocarro basing his shuffle for Rosanna off of Purdie and Bohnam, and this one as mentioned in the video, but I seriously doubt you can link them all like that. It's more a song writing choice I think.
@johnsowell423
@johnsowell423 2 года назад
@@doublestrokeroll That was the terminology they were using regarding the Glass Tiger song. I don't quite see a shuffle either when I hear those type songs. I more picture a shuffle to songs like "I'll Tumble 4 Ya" by Culture Club, but that may be a stretch too.
@doublestrokeroll
@doublestrokeroll Год назад
@@johnsowell423 Actually that Culture Club song is straight 1/8th notes, but I can see how you might feel it that way. The term "shuffle" for musicians has a specific meaning. It's based around a triplet subdivision of a standard 8th note. So a bar of 8th notes is 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + counted "one and two and three and four and" (Sometimes called "straight time") A triplet is 3 notes So a bar of 8th note triplets is 1 + a 2 + a 3 + a 4 + a Counted "one and uh two and uh three and uh four and uh" (This is called "swing time" like Blues and Jazz) A shuffle happens when you drop the "and" so you get 1 a 2 a 3 a 4 a Counted "one uh two uh three uh four" with a rest where the "and" was. Thing is, you can count a shuffle as a triplet if you want to because it is in triplet time. It's just the dropping of that note became a "thing" and it got it's own label. I'll skip the details of 1/2 time shuffles as it's basically the same thing but just "feels" slower As mentioned some famous examples of shuffle would be Home at Last by Steely Dan, Fool in the Rain by Zep, Rosanna by Toto (all half time shuffles). The Glass Tiger song is a standard shuffle.

🇨🇦 Funny, up here in Canada, a lot of my friends and I got sick of this song after a while. I’d say there was a bit of a backlash for them because of all the air play this band got. Up here in Canada there is a minimum amount of Canadian content required on Canadian airwaves. So when you got a band that did this well in both countries, they tended to play the hell out of it. There was a time where I had to use an epiPen every time Celine Dion came on the radio. Didn’t matter the genre the station was, if it was a Canadian hit and help then meet that minimum amount governed by the CRTC, they would play the hell out of it. So to say I was sick of this song was the understatement of the year. But as time went on, as it always does, I’ve started to appreciate it more and more. 🍁🍁🍁

Great band.I saw them live in Chatham, New Brunswick in 1992, there was almost no one there, it was fantastic, not for the band, but for we in the audience. Three songs you listed are great, but Diamond Sun and Thin Red Line were also spectacular.

I used to work in a Pub more than 20 years ago that Alan's dad and uncle went to pretty much daily. Alan would come by now and then for televised soccer matches and even played there a couple of times. They would walk his dad through the kitchen to the back door because it was a much shorter distance to home. They were always friendly and gracious about it. I was very sorry to hear about Alan having a stroke a few years back. I'm glad he's had a full recovery and resumed his musical career.

Music soul mate! I was such a fan of this band and none of my friends recall them at all!! So stoked to hear this while awaiting basic car maintenance that costs a fortune!💛💛😉
