As far as I know, very few Americans know of Bill. But I was fortunate enough to see a re-run episode of "Selwyn Froggitt" once while in England during the late 90's. I was so sore from laughing, I immediately became a fan. Not long after, I watched an episode of "The Gaffer", and realized, "Wow, this guy is even more talented than I thought". Upon return to America, I started searching, and naturally I found "Heartbeat". The rest is history, and I now have almost all of it on DVD. I actually went out and bought a special multi-system player, just so I could watch them all (they don't make them for the USA region players). I'm still searching for copies of "Great Scott" and "Life of Riley". I must say, I'm deeply disappointed that I found him so late; but I'm enjoying a great deal of time now, with all the treats he gave us. Happy Birthday Bill; sorry I'm a few weeks late. You need to check your Facebook page more often! LOL!!! ;) God Bless and hope you are well. We're not letting you go just yet!!!!

Only just discovered that Bill Maynard guested on This is Your Life back in 1974. Eamonn Andrews disguises himself as a ticket inspector on a train he's on. Never knew that, and I doubt anyone will have a recording of this, nothing comes up on youtube.

I had a courier who came to me everyday and she used to say she had a delivery for Bill most days..dvds,,she asked him once why he bought so many boxsets and he said ..its nice to see old friends he knew now Im locked in this house ..RIP Bill..you still owe me a beer from the greyhound track in Nutts Lane..lol

At 4.12, Bill refers to being, at just 11 y.o, a sort of hired 'gofer' for the American troops stationed near his then home-town. I don't doubt the substance of Bill's recollections, but he was born in 1928 and would have been 11 in 1939, 3 years before the first US troops arrived in Britain. Hitler declared war on the USA in Dec. 1941, and it wasn't until early 1942 that the first US troops were sent to the UK. I watched Heartbeat (here in Australia) mostly to see what Greengrass was up to.

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?

Very enjoyable informative interview. Great comedy actor, I watched 'Oh no it's Selwyn Froggitt' as a kid (possibly the first repeated ones in early 80s, 'cos I wouldn't have remembered the original run!) and have just been watching the early episodes of Series 1 again(including the pilot show) after a very long time and had a good laugh. Magic. 'Heartbeat' was good too! Well done to all involved. Update- just watched this with my partner and she loved it too! (She was a bit teary as well- his wife, recent bout of illness and not as recognized as he should be!)
