Following the Kokoda Trail campaign the Japanese retreated into the Papuan beachheads, the strongest of which was Buna. The US 32nd Division was given the task of capturing Buna but after a month of trying, no ground had been gained and the division was weakened by casualties, disease and exhaustion. Under considerable pressure from General MacArthur the Australian 18th Brigade was brought forward and from 18 December 1942 carried out a series of costly but successful attacks against the formidable Japanese lines of fortifications which led to the fall of Buna on 2 January 1943.
The presentation will cover the American experience but concentrate on a series of attacks by the three Australian battalions against the Japanese defences which led to the fall of Buna. A series of photos taken during these battles will accompany the presentation, along with more recent colour photos including drone footage. Interviews with three participants in the battles will also be aired.
Phillip Bradley is a leading Australian military historian. His extensive research on the battlefield, in the archives and with the veterans of the campaign has given him an intimate knowledge of the the commando raid on Salamaua. We are thrilled that he is joining us to talk about this dramatic and important battle.
Hell's Battlefield is Phillip Bradley's book that tells the whole story of the Australians against the Japanese in New Guinea during WWII, from invasion in 1942 to the brutal end game in 1945.

I have mentioned this before on other WW2 YT docs about Buna. In 1974 I was travelling with a serving US soldier and he wanted to visit his uncle in Buffalo NY. His uncle wasn't too pleased to see me as I had long hair and a beard. But when I spoke he said, are you an Australian? Well, he could not speak more highly of Australia. He was in New Guinea with the US 32 Div at Buna. He said that they did not know how use their weapons, the Australians had to teach them. The Aussies had to go before them in to the swamps and jungle because they were afraid. He said that in front of his nephew. I always thought he was joking until much later in life when I read about the campaign. Thank you for your WW2 in depth series.

My Mums cousin was with the 2/9 Battalion Lt.Tom Sivyer QX15024 at Buna, unfortunately he was KIA on 18/12/ 42 at Cape Endierdere. Thank you for this documentary as this gave myself a better understanding of what and where the 2/9 battlefield was.

WW2TV is so good at bringing history from some of the forgotten battles, from less recognised fronts, of the war to our attention. Impressive presentation from Phillip Bradley, as always.

My Grandpa fought with the 2/10th (B company) - absolutely insane that they kept attacking despite the casualties! Had read the battalion history before, but this presentation helped immensely in painting the picture of the battle. Lest we forget.

Great presentation! My dad’s brother was in the 2/9th in this particular battle. When I was just a kid, he used to recount a story about digging in with this ‘bloody 25 pounder’ firing flat over their heads at the Japanese on the other side of the strip. I used to think it was fanciful but Phil’s presentation showed this really occurred!! Thank you Phil and Woody!

I like Phil Bradley presentations a lot. He speaks slowly enough so we absorb the information and has great maps thoroughly explaining everything. His voice interviews with the veterans, are very moving. The before and after pictures show war then, now peace. The many wonderful photos taken by New Zealand born George Silk really added to the presentation. After Silk's WWII stint, he took many iconic photos in the US, including one in my hometown of people watching a special baseball game in 1960.

That was a really high casualty count for little more than runs on the board for McCarthur in his battle with Eisenhower.Losses in the Pacific were staggering.

Giving Phils outstanding account of this action, and given the account of how stubborn the Japs were, those casualty figures to me don't seem all that bad, taking into account the dence nature of the terrain and the heat plus deseases, absolutely well done to those Aussies and the US forces, great as ever Paul n Phil.. 👍

Thoroughly enjoyed Phillip Bradley’s presentation on Buna. My father arrived at Popendetta on the 17th December 1942 with “D” Sec 6th Div Signals in support of the 7th Div Cavalry for the attacks on Sanunanda and the flanking move to Huggins. They were located just to the rear of the 30 Bde HQ/Sig Office and in his book (Hells Battlefield) he makes mention of boxes of Japanese money found in the area, I have some of these Japanese notes. Looking forward to his presentation on the Battle for Sanunanda, the final battle in the Beachhead Campaign

The things I learned about this battle that I didn't know from the dry readings of official histories are threefold: 1. I can finally understand the terrain fully because of the incredible photos. 2. How tough the Australian soldier is. 3. How experience directly relates to the amount of casualties a unit suffers during a particular fight. It is clear that although the casualties that the 18th Brigade experienced were high, they were much lower overall than the poorly experienced US 32nd Division. I realize a Division is larger than a brigade, but the percentages flesh it out. I also agreed with Phillip in that I believe that MacArthur was a ****head. He was always taking credit when things went well, and would throw his subordinates (Australian or American) under the bus for any sort of failures. Beautifully told tale of the Buna campaign.

I knew and worked with Jack Latimer in the 1960's. He worked with Australian Consolidated Press where I was an apprentice. He carried his injuries heavily loosing one leg and used a walking stick. His health was delicate from both his wounds and the diseases all Australians soldiers suffered from for years after the war. He was often off work for days at a time because of his wounds. A humble man and well respected.

Hello mates.... My Dad was an American GI in New Guinea...With the 126th wounded Dec 5, 1942 at Sanananda .. Dad said that the Japanese Pill boxes were overgrown with Jungle and we'll fortified by the time the Americans arrived... He remembers during a briefing about taking a Pill box position in mid November...( His birthday was 28th of November) during the briefing he remembers thinking to himself that he might not see his 24th Birthday! They took the pill box out and two weeks later he'd take shrapnel from a Japanese grenade while helping a wounded GI his words that described that battle on the day he was wounded..." Honest to God Son I shit you not ...men were dropping like flies THAT day! Dad carried shrapnel in him for 55 years 10 days.... Miss him dearly...he was a rare soldier who shared with me his combat experience's! God bless 🛐🗽

Hace you ever told him about S/Sgt Herman L. Bottcher and the boys of G Company, 126th Infantry? They didn't refuse to fight. They reached the sea and beat back counterattack after counterattack. I'm tired of this anti-American shtick.

My grandfather was in C company 2/9th and was involved in this battle. He crossed the start line with the first attack. In his batallion there were 800 guys start and only 80 walked out, the information on casualties does not mention the people disabled by sickness and malaria. That was about half of most of the battallions. My grandfather was one of them. His name was Patrick Richard Price. QX5035. I asked him about it and he said it was brutal. the thing he said was their officers kept getting hit by snipers so the bren gunners took to hosing every coconut tree top in the plantation. He was a man amongst men. When he died at the age of 78 the main street of the town where he lived was lined with every veteran and their families in town. The 2/9th was in the almost all of the toughest battles.

He is. This photograph shows up with comments from time to time. It appears that US small arms were supplied to Australian troops that were attached to US units in New Guinea and some other places as a local practice to ensure that Australian troops fit in with the US logistics train. It is unclear why that would be the case at Buna but the Australian Stuart tanks had Browning M1919A4 machine guns using the same cartridge as the Garand

For whatever reason MacArthur thought it was a good idea to send in the 32nd division rather than the more highly trained 41st division which had been the first to land in Australia. Yesterday I listened to the We Have Ways podcast discussion on Eichelberger and how hard it was for him to sack his friend Harding at Buna which was interesting. Somehow that podcast however, is able to discuss the war in the Pacific without mentioning the Australian contribution in any depth even in New Guinea. It is all about Americans and the British in Burma.

I have in my possession a list of every American GI of the 126th Combat Infantry Regiment awarded the Combat Wounded Purple Heart during the Battles of Buna Gona Sanananda... Also I have several of those naughty propaganda leaflets of Soldiers having sex with other Soldiers wives while they were away fighting... portraying both Australian and Yanks....Dad sent them home to my Grandma and she kept them in a scrap book... I'm sure they are really rare...
