80th Anniversary of D-Day: The Grand Parade in Sur-Mer-Église
On June 5, 2024, the small town of Sur-Mer-Église became the epicenter of commemoration as it hosted a grand parade to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. This pivotal event in World War II saw the Allied forces landing on the beaches of Normandy, a turning point that led to the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi occupation.
Sur-Mer-Église, with its quaint streets and historic charm, was transformed into a living tapestry of remembrance and celebration. The parade commenced with the sound of bagpipes and drums, as veterans, many of whom were in their late 90s, led the procession. These heroes, donning their medals and uniforms, were greeted with thunderous applause and tears of gratitude from the gathered crowds.
Vintage military vehicles, including jeeps, trucks, and even amphibious craft, rolled through the streets, their presence a stark contrast to the serene backdrop of Sur-Mer-Église. These meticulously restored machines, some of which participated in the original landings, offered a tangible connection to the past. The rumble of their engines and the sight of historical re-enactors in period uniforms added an authentic touch to the parade, transporting spectators back to 1944.
In addition to the military display, the parade featured floats adorned with scenes depicting various aspects of the D-Day landings. From the initial storming of the beaches under heavy fire to the behind-the-scenes efforts of the medical teams and logistical support units, these floats provided a comprehensive narrative of the events that unfolded 80 years ago.
A poignant moment occurred when a formation of vintage aircraft, including Spitfires and C-47s, soared overhead in a synchronized flypast. The roar of their engines and the sight of them in the sky was a stirring tribute to the airmen who played a crucial role in the success of the D-Day operations.
The parade concluded at the town's war memorial, where a solemn ceremony took place. Dignitaries from around the world, including heads of state and representatives of veteran organizations, laid wreaths and delivered speeches honoring the bravery and resilience of the D-Day soldiers. A minute of silence was observed, followed by the playing of "The Last Post," which echoed through the streets, leaving many with a profound sense of reflection.
The 80th anniversary of D-Day at Sur-Mer-Église was not just a commemoration of a historic military achievement, but also a heartfelt tribute to the enduring legacy of those who fought for freedom. The grand parade on June 5, 2024, brought together generations, nations, and communities in a unified act of remembrance, ensuring that the heroism of D-Day will never be forgotten.

I was there a little further toward the church. The Parade rules were "period dress" military or civilian. My wife and I Traveled all over Normandy for 8 days and went to many camps and a couple museums. There were so many WWII vehicles, you would thing the invasion was last week. Meaning they were all over the roads all over Normandy. Most of these people were French. There were some English and probably no Americans except for we spectators. As an American, I cant express how much gratitude and warm friendliness of the French people I felt there as their guest. One 84 year old lady just started talking to me in Cherborg. She lived there all her life. Her house was bombed and an American soldier gave her he first banana. Her aunt had 2 American boyfriends and went dancing at the Atlantic Hotel. She still appreciated America invading and giving them their freedom back.

Sounds like mostly French patriots that painstakingly restore U.S. Armed Forces WW II vehicles. That's moving, man.

It is safe to say that future generations will keep the D-Day anniversaries going in Normandy. Ps...don't forget the Canadians. Didn't see many of their flags . Thank you for keeping those vehicles serviceable. Its obvious they are doing their PMCS's !

I'd make an observation. I was there during the 50th celebrations. Then most of the historic vehicles were manned by folks wearing street clothes There we smaller groups that were in costume. Here thirty years later the vast majority are in period clothing. Why? What has changed? I think it is from the growth in re-enacting WWII along with the growth of firms specializing in reproduction clothing. When WWII re-enacting first began at the Weldon Spring, MO US Army Reserve Training Center in May 1975, reproduction WWII items was almost unheard of except for some German insignia, medals and daggers. It warms my heart to see this growth for I am the man that began it all. You can read of it in A BRIDGE TO TIME, A Re-enactor's Journey.

unfortunately in this video i heard two many refences to merde anglais and the mocking slur Roast Beef used by French coming out from members of the crowd along with some of the people in vehicle parade. what can i say shame some of them think along those lines toward us brits. makes me feel quite sad. there must be some underlaying negativity within that area of the people of france towards us. i hope it is just general banter. they don't mean what they say in truth!

No they don’t. My grandparents were from this area and I remember my grandfather was always calling English people names. We’ve never understood why and he certainly didn’t know himself. I remember my family wondering why he hated them but we never had an answer.

US Airborne troops jumped for Ste Mere Eglise on D-day, so this parade is for their sacrifice. Note the paratrooper hung up on the church at the end of the video!
