After many questions as to how do I get my Mbuna so big so quickly. Well here's the answer, my DIY Gel Food, & large water changes twice a week. Take a look at the recipe below:
GEL FOOD RECIPE
Below encompasses a simple homemade gel food recipe, which is great for Mbuna cichlids, Gold fish, plecos and any other vegetarian fish, such as Mollies and Guppies. The idea is not mines, but sharing is caring. The amount of food gained from a little bit of each item is great, depending on the amount of fish you have, 1 batch can feed them for a month. With this formular a little really does go a long way. You'll only need 1 sprig/branch of broccoli and cauliflower and a small cut of zuccini, however the garlic and green peas are important and I advise to use a bit more, as garlic prevents internal parasites and green peas aid the digestive system and prevents Bloat and Swim bladder disease, which can be fatal to some fish.
Ingredients:
Broccoli
Spinach
Cauliflower
Cucumber/Zuccini
Green peas
Garlic
Fish Pellets
Fish flakes
Pure Gelatin (No additives, just 100% Gelatin)
1 cup boiling water water
1 flat container with a moderate surface area.
Additional equipment:
Blender
Procedure:
1. Wash all vegetables thoroughly and microwave(except cucumber/zuccini and garlic) in a small bowl of water for 1 minute.
2. Remove vegetables from the water and add to the blender.
3. Add Fish pellets and flakes to the vegetables. (This is optional, but its reccommended, as pellets usual have vitamins and minerals the fish need.)
4. Blend all to a smooth puree. Ensure there are no unblended lumps, consistency must be smooth.
5. Add 2 tablespoons of pure gelatin to 1 cup of boiling water. (Depending on the amount made the cup of water can be increased or decreased, experiment with the portioning based on amounts made, to get a firm gel consistency when cooled.)
6. Add the boiling water containing the gelatin to the blender and puree some more for a couple of seconds to mix it in.
7. Remove the paste from the blender and place into a flat container with a large surface area.
8. Place the container in the refridgerator for a couple hours until the gelatin sets in and solidifies.
9. Once cooled, the gel food should have the consistency of firm jello, and then it's ready to be fed.
The gel food, after it's cooled, can be cut into small cubes and fed to your fish. When feeding monitor your fish, and do not feed more than they can eat in 5 minutes. This food is great for fry as well, as it allows them to graze on the food during the day whenever they are hungry. This food is also good for plecos and other bottom feeders as well (Corys), as the food sinks to the bottom of the tank. Please remember not feed more than your fish can eat at one feeding.
