Today we'll cover how to plant bare root transplants. We got over 200 plants to put in the ground today. These trees take a little more work than the greenhouse plugs we put in the ground in our previous video, here: • #82 Planting Christmas...

There are a lot of suppliers out there. I put together a big list. I'm not aware of any off the top of my head that will do just 25. You'll probably just have to start calling around to the different suppliers and see who can help you out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2GQq50SxBh8.html

Does the root dip advertise a % success rate compared to just traditional transplanting?
@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm 4 года назад
Not that I've seen. Official studies are mixed from that I've read. A few growers I've spoken to recommend it. Some say it's cheap insurance. www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=rngr.net/publications/tpn/55-2/the-use-of-soil-additives-and-root-dips-on-noble-fir-christmas-trees/at_download/file&ved=2ahUKEwjdzby5y8_lAhWu2FkKHeClBhYQFjAAegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw0czFYOc-H7mbjEBOeWXn31

Hi Woods Tree Farm!! I ordered bare root for the spring, it will be my first time planting them. I am curious about the fertilizer tablets you used? We are just starting out, and I’ve gotten conflicting info on fertilizer, especially the first year? Thanks for all your videos, they really are helpful 😁🎄
@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm 4 года назад
We've also gotten mixed feedback on the topic. Seems like all the industry old-timers say don't bother. We went to a new growers workshop and the hosting farm did it and felt like it helped. The way I look at it, if it helps 2 out of 1000 trees survive to retail, then it pays for itself.

What about compost or mulching? Is the one time tablet the only soil amendment you use?

Great informative video. I'm looking to start out this year by planting a few hundred fir. I'm curious to know if you have noticed any difference between the plugs you planted vs. bareroot yet.
@kshtf

I'm curious to see how the plugs compare in their survival rate. I have never planted in the fall or planted the plugs and since you are doing both, I'm looking forward to how much of a difference there is. I just could never justify the price difference for the plugs plus our main supplier is only 15 minutes away and they don't raise plugs. Your root pruning, I think I would look for a different way, I really had a hard tome watching you getting your fingers so close to the ax. I'm all the time telling my helpers, I don't want blood on anything around here. Another tip would be to put your gel into the bucket your carrying you seedlings in. That way you don't need to drag an extra bucket thru the field. You also might want to go heavier with the gel, we always have another bucket setting up as we plant and once you are not seeing it sticking to the roots, we grab the next bucket and put more gel into the first. The idea behind it is that it works like little sponges and soaks up the moisture when it is available and the seedling grab from that when it is dry. Since you just went thru a dry summer, the more water you can retain at the roots, the better you survival rate may be. As always, really enjoyed the video. Keep up the great work.

You're lucky to have a supplier so close! I think the camera angle made the chopping look closer than it really was. I'll keep you posted oh how the plugs do.

Woods Tree Farm how did the plugs end up doing compared to the bare root? Or is it still too early to tell?

Where can we order some trees, fertilizer tablets, and gel from. Want to make a small patch of trees for Bob-White quail habitat .

Depends what kind of trees you're looking for and how many. You might find what you want from the state forest department. Some growers like chief river nursery do small orders while others may have a $200 or $500 minimum. Here is root dip and fertilizer tablets on Amazon. amzn.to/2WoYjiq amzn.to/371fb2j amzn.to/2q6eRQ4

Must be online distortion... that dibble does not appear to be 12 inches long. 10" maybe.
@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm 3 года назад
Fact: The camera makes tools look smaller and makes me look heavier. 😂🌲 Its definitely 12". We measured. The product dimensions are listed as 38x12x2, so I think that's 38" overall length and the bar is 12x2. amzn.to/3qqxecI

Do you have any tips on starting out brand new? Also, is the 5-7 year rate to maturity start from seed to mature? Does it take 5-7 years to grow from seed, or to grow from transplant plug?
@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm 3 года назад
For starting out, know your USDA zone and which species of trees are known to grow in your zone. Next is know your soil (that's something we're still learning). Make sure you get a soil test and have the results analyzed for each type of tree you want to grow. The timeline is 5-7 years from when we receive it as a seedling. The seedlings took 2-4 years to grow before arriving at our farm.

Good information! Are the plugs more expensive (they seem easier to plant)?
@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm 4 года назад
Yes, the plugs are marginally more expensive, and theyre also younger/smaller (so it'll take longer before ready for harvest). Definitely easier to plant though.

Do you find it common for barefoot evergreens to drop needles and push new growth/needles?
@WoodsTreeFarm
@WoodsTreeFarm 4 месяца назад
you mean bareroot? I don't think bareroot or plugs or potted transplants are any different in that regard. Most evergreens shed some needles annually.
@ColorMyWorldGardening

@@WoodsTreeFarm yes. I have some barefoot Norway spruce that started dropping needles in past few weeks (planted late March) but now pushing new growth.
