Why do organ transplants fail? What is immunosuppression? This video attempts to answer these questions. The major barrier to transplantation of organs from one individual to another of the same species (called allografts) is immunologic rejection of the transplanted tissue. Rejection is a complex phenomenon involving both cell- and antibody-mediated hypersensitivity reactions directed against histocompatibility molecules on the foreign graft.
