It seems like this year had lots of tension, conflict, and death. I wonder if things would have been different if King Otis had been there. His calm, dominate presence kept the other bears in line.
On the real Brooks River in real Katmai National Park, Otis was a minor character who was mostly tolerated by the more dominant bears. It's only the imagination of cam viewers that turned him into this celebrated bear "demi-god". I loved Otis, saw him on both my visits to Katmai and of course on the cams. He was the perfect example of an old bear facing increasingly difficult challenges, who nevertheless was able to fit in in the competitive environment at Brooks River and successfully pack on the pounds year after year. Certainly an animal to be admired, but to ascribe him superpowers...that is not how nature works...
Why is nature so cruel? I was horrified when I read that today. And since I watched the two videos, I've been sitting here crying my heart out. Rest in peace 402 and 856, I hope you find a new great love.
I truly believe these bears feel more emotions than we can understand. I have long felt they are more social as well. Just watch a mother bear with her cubs or bears playing. This must be grieving the demeanor of this bear, which speaks volumes!
Beautiful score to "Tristan and Isolde". From what I read, the story of Tristan and Isolde is one of forbidden, but irresistible, love. And love that can not be denied even when it leads to tragedy. A memorable score to this sad story. 402's descendants will be part of Brooks River for generations.
So very sad. I just recent watched a video of where 856 was attacking 402 and her cubs in 2009 ? Their relationship (s) are hard to understand. My husband passed away unexpectedly at home on August 1st. I feel sad. Sad like 856. Knowing the season will end. And I will for the rest of My days, weeks or years 😢 Never see Him again . 402 will Forever be at Brooks Falls. Rest in peace Beautiful Mama Bear 🐻. 😭 ❤
Wow so very sad ... that's the area where she was brought ashore so its so difficult not to believe that 856 grieving. Im sure he was. Nature is harsh and brutal. I don't say cruel because only humans are cruel. RIP 402. In time I hope 856 will find a new love bear.
Is this 856 really finding 402's body? This is so sad. It's been a hard year and I'm wondering if this will be my last following the Brooks Falls bears. My heart needs a break.
I have been watching for 8 years and the frequency and intensity of sad situations have increased. Last season was dreadful. This incident has taken its toll. I loved 402 Brooke so much. I can't watch any more seasons. I'm still torn with Grazer's Tiny..and now this.. This used to be my breakaway time but I'm unable to add more sadness and chaos to how the world already is. I'm done. I haven't even been interested in Fat Bear Week. I'm torn and heartbroken. I'm grieving along with 856.
Dear viewers, brutality, cruelty and sadness are the results of living in an imperfect world. All this will pass, and one day, we and the Brooke Falls Bears will know perfection without brutality, cruelty and sadness. The bears know their Creator and I pray you do too. (Job 12:7)
Just heartbreaking what I don’t understand is why 469 turned on her didn’t she had been his mate over the years was it just over salmon & escalated I guess we will never know
It's sad, it's true. We don't know why this male bear killed Queen. Out of hunger, out of murder? Nature is cruel, but humans are much crueler! We see this every day in the news, how cruel and terrible we humans are. Still, my heart hurts when I see how Queen desperately fought for and lost her life (to see in another video)! What a cruel death. I always thought that male bears didn't attack and kill female bears! But I must have made a mistake here. By the way, why these numbers? 402, 856, 469! To keep them in lists, it's ok. But can't the bears still get additional names? After all, they are God’s creatures too! 🙏🕯😢
No, the bear standing in the grassy area is 151 "Walker". At least he looks like him. 856 is much taller and longer than 151. It can be a bit confusing looking at so many bears.
469 killed her for food. She was one of the oldest female bears and 469 who is also old and he has a history of similar things. He was seen guarding a cache back in 2012 but was forced to give it up to bear 814 Lurch, who was larger and more dominant. This probably happens more than people think. If you are a smaller bear you better look out for the bigger ones.
