Thank you for this clarification! I was suuuuper confused by how 85mm had a more compressed bg than the 135mm, especially with the shot on the front porch with the boxes in the back on the right.

I got the 135mm a few weeks now and it’s absolutely amazing and unique 😃 Super fast, reliable and absolutely sharp from 1.8 on with a incredible bokeh. Yes, it’s expensive, but worth it. One thing: it got a little bit issues against direct sunlight with green flairs. I use it on a A7RIII. I bought the FE 85mm f/1.8 instead the 85mm GM cause it’s faster, sharper, weighs less ans it’s cheaper as well.

The way you did the series of sample shots in the beginning--first showing your POV so we could see the distance to the model and the scene--then the side by side immediately afterward, so I could stop the video and really compare, that was awesome! Really useful video!

Great content as always. Ever since I bought my 85mm 1.4 it’s been my absolute favorite lens and that’s going on two years now. With that being said I have considered the 135mm 1.8. Gotta adapt to the times so maybe I’ll have to pick one up.

I would still say the 85mm is king if you're only gonna have one. Lower F-stop and not too zoomed for most indoors settings. The 135mm is a stretch as soon as you go indoors. But outdoors, the 135mm looks brilliant! I just wanted to say that the distance to the model is important not just because of covid but also for the model's comfort and perceived closeness of the shot. If you have a lens where you have to stand really close, models usually don't like that. They get self conscious and think you are making a really close-up pic with all the details (zits or imperfections they might worry about, why many prefer full-body even though portraits most often drive several times more engagement on instagram). An 85mm, in my experience, puts the model at ease, it doesn't feel close or imposing, even if you are actually shooting just shoulders up, they usually don't realise that unless they happen to know cameras really well. This gives you as a photographer the freedom to choose whether you want to shoot portraits or full body without getting uncomfortable.
@MT-xt

Personally I would go with every lens from 35mm to 85mm as 90% of my shoots are indoor, but then a big gap all the way until 180mm to 200mm. I find 135mm to be a bit too in the middle for me. Lots of people love this sweet spot tho

So true. I have 135 mm. Like manny said, its look is really unique. Thinking of buying 70-180 plus a cheap 85 like samyamg af. I'll miss it, but it is sometimes stressful to compose with it (when space is limited)
@RatherBDiving1

Manny, I recently picked up the 135mm GM. I’m so impressed with it. It’s freaking awesome paired with the R4. The speed and accuracy of the AF is incredible. With my R4 I find that slight misses in AF is very noticeable, but this lens nails focus nearly every shot on my portrait sessions. The sharpness and detail this lens renders is insane. The bokeh and separation of this focal length is stunning, hard to beat without going for the 200mm f2. So I find that while this lens is expensive, it delivers consistently.

It makes PERFECT sense to get the 135mm. I was a full time pro for nearly 50 years, and the 135 remains my favourite - hell I'm still using my Canon FD 135mm from around 1974, though now on Sony bodies! I only got an 85mm when I went digital, and cameras were all crop sensor!

Pre Pandemic my portrait lens choices were: Full body shots; Zeiss Batis 40mm. Half body shots: Sony/Zeiss 55mm Sonnar. Head and shoulders and face only shots; Sony 135mm GM. Post pandemic: Full body shots; Sony/Zeiss 55mm gives me enough social distancing space. The 135mm GM for half body and close ups. I had the Sony 85 1.8 for a while but found the color rendition too sterile for my personal taste. I'm 71 years old, I've been shooting professionally since 1970, including 2 years as an army combat photographer. Both commercial and fine art. I've shot with many Leica, Zeiss, Voigtlander, Meyer, Schneider, Rodenstock, Canon, Nikkor lenses and more. The Sony 135 GM is the best in it's general focal range I have ever used. The only other pure Sony brand lens I use is the 24-105 G, mainly when I need the convenience of a zoom. All my other lenses for my Sonys are Zeiss Batis, Voigtlander, Sigma, Tamron, etc. Color rendition is just as important to me as all the other optical qualities. The 135 GM passes that test. We all see differently so these are only my choices as I see. If you prefer other lenses that's your way of seeing, and that's fine.
@tylerhostetter8289

I use the 85mm 1.8 and the 70_200 2.8 to get more compression. When I want a more magical rendering, something that differentiates my work, I use the voigtlander 40mm 1.2. I think the colors that come from that lens are simply amazing. It's not always easy nailing focus but when you do and your composition is right... It's just magic.

I find myself using the Sigma 105/1.4 the most. It is a bit more practical for subject distance and the OOF is just as good. I use the 135/1.8 but I tend to fall back on the 105 more often for portraits.

The 135mm is my favourite lens. I use it 80% of the time when outdoors mostly wide-open. Studio indoors is the 85mm f1.8 (portraits at around f7) and the 55mm f1.8 for full-body (also around f7). The lens I use the least is the 35mm f1.4, thinking of selling it to go to the much smaller and lighter 35mm f1.8. Never felt the need for a 24mm but would/will go with the 1.4 GM if ever that day arrives. Avoiding zooms like the plague after trying a Tamron zoom for 3 days.

I love the 135 and own it. It is tack sharp and great depth of field. Butter shots all around. I also own the 85 1.8 FE lens and that is also pretty damn sharp but use it when in closer quarters.

Sigma 105mm f1.4 is what I find I'm using the most even with indoor boudoir!

I think the 85mm f/1.4 will give a very similar effect to the 135mm f1.8mm on an apsc camera (128mm f2.0 equivalent). Although currently limited to 24mpx in resolution.

Thank you for confirming the 135GM. I've had my 135GM for about a year and IMO is one of the sharpest lens on the planet.

135 mm brother! I have a manual focus Lens from Samyang! You had a old video about it. Decided to get this one because it was around my budget. 135 is the way to go in 2020 🔥

Its funny that @4:00 you mentioned about the Canon 200mm F2/L which I also commented the same on the social media just today before I watch this. I have both lenses and the only difference is distance, sharpness and bokeh are 99.999% identical this is why I sold the Canon F2/L to cover the A7R4 cost plus extra money since I got the same money as when I bought the canon 4yrs ago.
