As a new Sony A7riii owner who is outfitting her kit, yes, I really like and need these kinds of comparison videos. This one was to-the-point; the real shooting examples you used are wonderfully illustrative, and you know what you're talking about. Thanks!

exactly, especially for 1200$ you can get another decent lens
@TheDajunior
@TheDajunior 5 лет назад
@Phil Jones65 adopted lenses perform really poorly and they are designed for dslr which means huge size and bad weight balance on mirrorless.
@TheDajunior
@TheDajunior 5 лет назад
@Phil Jones65 yes and no. In fact lenses itself are similar in size on any system. Bigger lenses either have bigger aperture or more complex optical scheme. So saying that some minolta lens is smaller means that it has smaller operture or older optical scheme causing worse image quality. It's why for example takumar 50 1.4 is so tiny in comparison to carl zeiss 50 1.4 lens for sony. The difference is about 3 times in size. My point was - what reason to buy a compact mirrorless and make it bulky and performing poorly using adopters? I bought it because mirrorless have accurate AF(no misses like on dslrs), eye AF functionality(doesn't work via adopters except insanely pricy metabones) and small size. To have these advantages it's necessary to have native lenses. Moreover many(but not all of course) native sony lenses have best image quality on the market. For example sony 85 1.8 fe from this video has 46 points on dxomark. There is no better lens on the market for such price. So I don't understand how you're going to save money using adapters and loosing AF performance and some features like eye AF if there is no cheaper dslr lens with better or even equal image quality on the market.
@TheDajunior
@TheDajunior 5 лет назад
@Phil Jones65 the truth is you save money buying native lenses. Adapter + dslr lenses only seem to be saving of money but the reality is you sacrifice performance and features. If you had dslr lenses before switching to a7 - it's another story, but I didn't have any lenses before. So if you buy lenses from the scratch you don't save anything using adapters + dslr lenses because they are not really cheaper. And you are not forced to buy GM lenses because there are alternatives. I also used only central focusing point before when I was a canon shooter, but it works only on telephoto lenses. If you try this trick on a wide lens you'll get a focus miss. You can also say that AF isn't necessary, before people used manual focusing all the time. Okay, but before people also used horses as a transport, so I don't get your point. I don't want to pay for modern technologies but use them as in cave times.
@TheDajunior
@TheDajunior 5 лет назад
@Phil Jones65 99% of vintage lenses are crappy. You can think that your lenses are sharp until you try 55 1.8 or 85 1.8. So yeah, better don't try them because you will be totally disappointer how bad old lenses are. I tried them a lot and my decision is paying for native sony lenses. Smart people don't waste their time for crappy vintage lenses.

it is more more important and people wont notice the less or slightly less blur to the back. they will notice the sharpness though. think about this you can add more blur by moving yourself back a bit and having the model come with you. with the 1.4, to get its sharpness of the 1.8, you have to stop it down a little to get that which negates the benefit of the 1.4. you want sharp at 1.4, the sigma art trumps the GM. search vids and see yourself.

The GM is very sharp by modern standards and in the the 85mm focal length there's no denying that it's rendering is the more pleasing classical-esque portrait lens. The Sony is way cheaper and waaaaay lighter. That's why it's a winner to me. I prefer the GM rendering for portraits in this focal length; hands down. The Sony makes much more sense for most people.
@LeeZavitz

I shot with the 85mm f1.8 for awhile and although the af is fast and the lens is sharp I find the bokeh very busy and even slightly swirly. I wasn’t a fan. That said, it’s a good value for a super sharp lens. It would be perfect in the studio. Good comparison bro.

I have noticed the swirl in a few shots, to be honest I quite it but I do use a lot of old manual focus lenses so maybe it's because I'm quite used to that kind of rendering.

Swirl or not, a $1200 different is astounding for the small difference in image quality. Same with my $200 sony 50mm 1.8 haha a great lens.
@TravMan3211
@TravMan3211 5 лет назад
@@john_young Honestly depends on who's looking at the image, 100% of non-photographers cannot tell the difference between these two lenses. Yes if you're a content creator for other photographers they may nitpick these types of things but shooting for clients that have no photography background the difference will not be noticed there for a $600 lens that produces practically the same quality (and sharper) is by far worth it.
@TravMan3211
@TravMan3211 5 лет назад
@@john_young I mean if you really wanted to you could always simulate that exact same effect you're talking about with the smart phones in Photoshop. Mobile devices are only simulating the blur effect anyways. I do find it hard to believe clients would notice the difference but we could argue that all day. Still not noticeable enough to pay $1200 more, I've seen multiple reviews that said they had wished they got the $600 85mm before dropping 2k on the GM. Multiple from credible photographers ^.^

Very informative Manny! As someone who does NOT earn money off photography, I always grab the cheaper, albeit high performing, lens. Whenever I do come across a couple thousand dollars while raising a family, camera lenses never get put on the top of my priority list. That said, I think of my 85mm 1.8 as a top premium portrait lens (in my own little world) because in my opinion, it STILL gives me that dreamy background look under the right conditions.

Thanks, Manny! When I was chosing between these two, I had similar impressions. Sony's 85mm f1.8 is praised by most reviewers and that speaks a lot. For non-pros like me a cheaper option is the way to go. For working photographers the f1.4 is a no brainer, in my opinion. Thanks for inpsiring us, man! I bought Sony system thanks to you and a couple of other photographers and have no regrets at all. Cheers.

I personally prefer the aperture ring because I can change the settings with the camera off, but I do understand your gripes with always accidentally touching it. But I am also glad to have it since it makes video focusing much easier

I do very much like videos like this. Anyone else who does anything like this *tends* to only post short 20 or 30 second clips of just one aspect that you covered. It's helpful to have it all in one place with someone who has a better idea of what they're doing and better ways to record and show the results. One idea I have though is comparisons to vintage lenses. You mention you like the rendering of the G Master more, and vintage lenses are known to be desirable for their rendering (thinking specifically about the Nikon 105 f/2.5). A good *knowledgeable* comparison to older lenses if someone is willing to sacrifice AF for certain characteristics would be cool.

Sharpness is overrated but the fact that the 1.8 focuses better in low light and is slightly sharper makes it a clear winner for wedding photographers but I'm curious if the GM is sharper or just as sharp at 1.8? Also if you love the creamy background maybe consider the 135mm and see if that paired with the 85mm 1.8 in your kit is better than the 85 1.4?

I couldn't believe that difference in bokeh can be that different on two lenses with very small difference in numbers. Image quality wise and I think skin color were better with 1.4 version

Manny!! Great vid as always! It would be great to see how that new sigma 56mm f1.4 compares to Sony 85 mm f1.8! Aps-c vs full frame!

Great video Manny! The 85mm f1.8 was My first real lens purchase. I love it! But I do really like the pop of Your f1.4. 😍

Thanks for the comparison Manny - I’m in process of setting up a lens set for my A7riii - and these are very helpful. Thanks m8!

Yo,Manny! S/o to you for giving a straight answer to the question " Is is worth it over the other?"! Have the feeling a lot of RU-vidrs these days are just tiptoeing around a direct answer to simple question. They're always like "Is for you to decide." or "Whatever suits you best." . I mean like when people are indecisive the last thing they should hear when seeking advice is "you pick". So just thumbs up for keeping it clean and on point! :)

I LOVE my 85mm f/1.8, especially on my a6000, gives me an equivalent of 130mm. Can't wait to move up to Full Frame one day.

It's great seeing the EVF. I am thinking about upgrading from my 6D to the a7iii and the 85mm 1.8 looks great. Such a good price too.

Thanks for confirming this. I am a Nikon shooter but I just bought the A7III to do more video and some portraiture. I just bought the 85mm 1.8 to do a mixture of both and I'm pleased to see it has a little better autofocus speed. Thanks for all your reviews.

Great comparison. I bought 1.8/85 FE 1.5 year ago, and I should say It's really very nice lens for the 650$. I'm completely satisfied with It.

If he already has the more expensive glass that is better quality (photos). Why would he down grade? That doesn’t make sense. I have the 85 1.8 and see no reason to upgrade, but if I had the 1.4 I wouldn’t downgrade to get the 1.8. I guess people just think different
@Zarabozo
@Zarabozo 5 лет назад
@@YourSpongeBoy If the upgrade is not worth it, why would you not go back? If you find a single reason to not going back, having the opportunity to do so, then that reason is making it worth it to you.

Francisco Zarabozo I put it this way. The Sony A7riii is $1000 more than the A7iii even though they share a lot of the same properties. Is the 7R $1000 better than the 7iii? In my humble opinion no it’s not, in fact the the A7iii does things better than the 7Riii, but is it better? No! The 7R is still a more capable camera. Same thing with the 85 1.8. He never said the 1.8 was a better lens but it does things better than the 1.4 (low light autofocus). It may not be $1200 better but it may be $500-$600 better but they are not equal. The 1.4 works better for him and the work he does, but for someone else the 1.8 is just fine. Again I own the 1.8 and love it to death, but some need bigger glass for the work they do.

Just bought the Rokinon 14mm F2.8/ 35mm F1.4/ 50mm F1.4 from B&H. I’ve heard great things about these lenses the only issue is that they don’t ship with the latest firmware so I was forced to buy the lens station for updating for another $100🙄. Lenses arrive today! Pairing them with my a7rii

I checked out this video just for the comparison of the 1.4 to 1.8. I use L-mount, so I’m not comparing the lenses themselves, just the aperture. I have the Sigma 85mm 1.4 and was wondering if I would be happy selling it for the Lumix S 85mm 1.8. This video showed that I should stick with what I’ve got 😎 The extra blur from the bokeh makes things look more premium and dreamy, in my opinion. I know some people don’t like it, but it has its moments for use. 🤷‍♂️ I just thought I’d post this for anyone else in a similar situation.

Having shot Canon, is the 85 GM more "magical" in rendering than the 85mm 1.2 L II? One main reason i'm still holding back, the AF speed and other features not as important for me as the image rendering (not sharpness), but beautiful rendering, especially for portraits. Just wanted to get your opinion, thanks in advance.
