A playthrough of the final boss Golba in SNK’s Samurai Shodown Edge of Destiny/Samurai Shodown Sen.
Samurai Shodown Sen. There are black sheep games, and then there’s this. I have no clue why this game was made. It is a shoddy, irrelevant title which is barely based on the series it claims to be a part of. The gameplay is slow, broken and monotonous. The game has far too many characters (26 in total), including many which are just ridiculous stereotypes, such as the Afro Samurai J and even a bleedin’ Viking of all things. Sen seems to almost be a sort of spiritual successor to Sam Sho 64 and 64-2, yet somehow manages to be worse than it in every way conceivable.
Sen was originally released on the Taito Type X board, and then ported eventually to the Xbox 360. You may notice two issues with that statement. One, for a Taito Type X game it looks absolutely horrible. I mean, simply horrific. The character models have terrible lighting, they look incredibly bland and often featureless, the levels are drab and dull, and in general it comes across as a game which they ran out of budget for, and eventually just had to shove out in the state it was in. Or, it was made simply to fund KOFXII and XIII, which might actually hold some credence now that I think about it. The other part of that statement is that, well, this game was ported to the 360. Of all things. A console which outright failed in the East, and which was more or less wholly Western in focus. When you think of Japanese-exclusives or Japanese-centric games, they usually came out on the PS3, understandably. Here however, Sen for some reason or another got a release on the 360. Maybe it was just cheaper than porting it to the PS3? I honestly don’t know.
Then we come to the gameplay. It is awful. It doesn’t know what it wants to be in the slightest. The game obviously, vaguely wants to be Soul Calibur, but it’s far too stiff and cumbersome to be a game in that series. Simultaneously, it wants to have combos and aerial combos…while also often making it so that heavy attacks do the exact same amount of damage (if not more) than the best combo a character can execute. The game features four buttons; a vertical slash, a horizontal slash, a kick and a throw button. Yeah, a separate button for throws. I’ll get into that later. So, that of course means that you block by moving away from your opponent, like a 2D fighter. However, for a cumbersome fighting game like this it just barely works. The manual blocking of the SoulCalibur series works because you need to be able to instantly go into a block in a game which is that fast-paced. Here however, after executing an attack (or series of attacks), the character is left vulnerable and is unable to block, simply because they’re temporarily unable to move backwards. And because they can’t do that, they can’t block, leading you to feel completely out of control of your character every time you attack. In a 2D fighter, you’d be able to recover quick enough after an attack to then block again, unless the opponent outright countered you. Here however, the game enacts an inane practice where side-stepping is incredibly stiff, basically leading to a situation where you have heavy, 3D mechanics on a more or less 2D plane, leading to a series of trivial and tedious blocks by your opponent, until one of you finds an opening or falls for a heavy slash. Which is surprisingly common.
So, you have a game which has absolutely no clue what it wants to be. Not quite a 3D fighter, but not quite 2D. Not quite combo-focussed, but not quite strike-based like the classic Sam Sho games. It’s a bizarre, unsatisfying myriad which is only compounded by the fact that so much of it is an anomaly for the series. Tons of new, stereotypical characters who have never appeared since, with back-stories you don’t care about and a story which makes literally no sense. And, oh, you might notice something else. This is one of the blandest fighting games in existence. It’s far, far too real, especially for Samurai Shodown of all things. It tries to ground itself in reality when it comes to gameplay, removing most of the supernatural special moves and elements like that. However, said illusion is failed when you end up fighting an 11th century Viking, amongst other ridiculous characters who look like they were based on the costumes they could find in their local fancy dress shop.

[continued from description] Then you have the bosses. They are some of the worst in existence. Neither of them is even very complicated, but they are absolutely horrendous. The one, sole upside of the port of this game is that, at the very least, the bosses can be unlocked. But, like most lazy games, they can’t even be used in story mode; only in Survival, Versus and Training. For some reason, the player will always fight a character called Angelica in the 6th stage of the game. I guess this sort of makes her a sub-sub-boss, but she’s innately playable so there isn’t much to say about her. The sub-boss of the game is the infamous Draco, who is so bad that I’ll need to divulge the sheer extent of his brokenness in the next video. The final boss of the game is Golba, who’s backstory is actually rather batshit. Basically, he’s a prince of a country called Lesphia. He was passed over as heir for the kingdom in favour of his older brother, which led to him being sent into exile after attempting a Coup D’etat. He joins the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War (I’m not kidding, that’s actually a plot point), and as a result of his experience in the war eventually turns into a sort of Napoleon-esque figure, seeking to conquer and subjugate all of Europe. For some reason. With his European origins, American influence and desire to subjugate Europe, it is rather clear to me that Golba is based on Napoleon to some extent. The fact that his game takes place in 1791 (a couple years after the beginning of the French Revolution) is something of a testament to that. Golba organises the tournament in order to find strong warriors to join his ranks and lead his armies. In the story mode, each character has a (relatively) unique cutscene with him, before attempting to kill him. In terms of how Golba plays, there really isn’t too much to say. He’s a rapier-using officer, with a number of decent combos and quick hitting strikes. Here’s the thing though. He seems to hit harder than basically any other character in the game. His heavy attacks come out insanely quickly, his combos knock off a chunk of damage, and in general he has the ability to absolutely tear the opponent to shreds in mere seconds if the player knows what they’re doing. And that mostly comes down to his only real special ability; his Tiger Hold move. Golba’s Tiger Hold can be initiated by holding down the Throw button after select attacks, and can lead to one of three follow-ups. Two of these follow ups (the kick and vertical slash variants) aren’t much to write home about. The third however…Jesus Christ. His horizontal slash variant is an absolute monster. It takes out nearly half of the opponent’s health on impact, and comes out so quickly that there’s no way to avoid it in time unless you’re already blocking. It’s insanely powerful, and only gets worse if you allow Golba to get into rage mode. Here’s the thing as well though. He can shift into his Tiger Hold stance after his most powerful combos (b+VS, HS, HS, HS+VS), and given that that combo stuns the opponent, if Golba hits them with the Tiger Slash afterwards…he’ll take out 80% of their health. Just. Like. That. The timing’s a little difficult, but if you get it down then you’ll just cut down opponents like its nothing. Here’s the thing about these two bosses though. They are dead easy, I mean dead easy, if you simply spam the throw button at them. This goes for the rest of the game too, but especially for the bosses. An attack might get countered or blocked, but a throw? Well, either the throw hits, or they back away. No counters; your opponent simply breaks off the throw, moving away a bit, which allows you to move in towards them and try a throw again. And that’s it. Dodge any wake-up attacks, spam throws and you will defeat both bosses with relative easy. Two insanely powerful bosses…easily defeated with an ill-thought-out, ridiculous mechanic. It’s beyond amateur. It’s a clear indication that this project had little to no direction, and must have been little more than a cash-in. That said, neither boss is full-proof to play as, either. Kirian (the bane of my existence when I was playing through the game) also uses a rapier and is incredibly fast. As is typical with 3D fighters, speed kills, which means that even in human hands Golba is suspetible to the pin-point accurate bullshit that the AI can throw out against you. That said, given that he’s so broken it does make for a fun character to play, but certainly never as one to fight against. His attacks come out so hard and so quickly that without using the Throw Method, fighting him is simply an exercise in frustration. In all aspects, Samurai Shodown Sen is a disgrace to the series, and an absolute disgrace to fighting games in general. It’s with good reason that it’s one of the most maligned series in existence, and its reputation is well-earned. Next up, good Lord, it’s a boss who is somehow even worse.

What can I say, I'm a great guy like that. But yeah, no one really wants to remember Sen. At the very least the bosses are quite interesting, if only because of how batshit broken they are. It's...something, i guess?

> _"For some reason, the player will always fight a character called _*_Angelica in the 6th stage of the game._*_ I guess this sort of makes her a sub-sub-boss, but she’s innately playable so there isn’t much to say about her."_ A similar thing happens in Tekken 6's Arcade Mode. Whenever you're at stage 6 (stage before the bosses), you will always either face Lars or Alisa. Also, since we're currently tackling on a SNK game, what are your thoughts on the new KOF XIV character Najd?
@AdmiralMcFish
@AdmiralMcFish 6 лет назад
Go against the grain for once, and I'm not all too excited about her for some reason. A bit like Menat, she feels like one of those designs which almost there...but just not quite. There's something missing for me, but I can't really put my finger on it.

R.I.P. Samurai Shodown 1993-2008 i hope there might be a chance for a Samurai Shodown VII

SNK expressed some interest in making more SamSho games, so VII could be their next big project once they're done expanding and supporting XIV...

My thoughts exactly. SNK is having a bit of a revival right now, and if their other projects go well/sell well, they might be open to bringing back other franchises. Certainly a possibility.

This isn't the arcade version; it's the Xbox 360 port. I couldn't figure out how to hack the arcade version.

This game actually has a dope artstyle, UI, and even the new characters are cool aside from like Claude and even Suzu imo... Shame about the gameplay. If the soulcalibur team completely redid this game, with dismemberments, stage-outs and all, that'd be so sick

I think it had the potential to be good. Samurai Shodown 64 was 3D and had similar gameplay to this but it was much, much better.

God I remember SBFP play this game but I had hard time believing that it's so bad... Oh I was so wrong lmao Usually I'm the kind of guy to try and find positives in negatives but its incradibly hard to come up with anything. I guess SOME new characters have decent designs, like Angelica (since im a sucker for mystic, tribal, silk wearing kind of characters or however you call it). Idk what else really bleh
@AdmiralMcFish
@AdmiralMcFish 6 лет назад
I've had that before, where I simply couldn't believe a game was THAT bad, and indeed Sen was one of those games for me too. And then I played it. And realised that it was one of the biggest messes in video game history. And yeah, this game just doesn't have many positives. As you said, a few of the designs are decent, but they're wasted in a game this bland, broken and tedious.It is a shitty game on the whole, and that seems to be a pretty ubiquitous sentiment from just about everyone. Can't believe I almost thought of buying this years ago, the disappointment would have been crushing.

Golba is strongest boss ever in Samurai Shodown. He can easily beat Amakusa, Mizuki, Zankuro, Gaoh, Yuga and Shizuka.

You know what this looks like with it's bland character models and truly atrocious backgrounds? It looks like it's one of the PS2 Oneechanbara games.

Wow, that is a surprisingly accurate comparison, right down to the washed out visuals and general lack of detail. Indeed, everything points towards this being a horrendous cheap title on the whole. Not the best way to end one of your biggest franchises.

Huh...that's strange , this comment was supposed to be posted on the video you did of gandara....not sure how the comment got here, unless RU-vid is moving my comments before I can send them. Also about this game, although it looks more early ps2 era wise....the art style prior to matches is pretty good, they could have used it in a different type of game

Yeah, most of your comments ended up on unrelated videos, it was pretty weird. RU-vid is so messed up nowadays.

Funny enough I remember watching this game before and asking myself "how is this a samurai showdown game?" Like call me crazy but isn't that game series supposed to teach you to be defensive? Like the amount of damage done on a counter hit is insane yet this. Ugh. I bet if you took out the "samurai showdown name" from this it would be mediocre fighting game at best
