Neat way to establish quick cut & fill. I would suggest attaching a second folding tape to the post with 7" at the FG mark. Then you can use the sight level on the first tape without having to bend over. Say if you hold the level consistently at 60" and read 56" on the mark you need 4" of fill. Read 65" and a 5" cut. It will definitely save the back from not having to bend over.

I just leveled an area for our new shed. My 12 year old son didn't understand the "backwards" number reading while using a transit until I had him stand on the porch steps. It was easier for him to visualize it and now he gets it.

I used those hand levels for my career in highway const. Hard to admit it took a while to learn the crude ways after all the schooling in college. As a state highway guy we used those for minor things like approaches, approach pipes, and offsets to construction stakes.

That hand level brings back memories from my early career. I'm a civil engineer and the technology has come a long way, especially in the last ten years. My surveyor recently started using a drone for his survey work. His topographic map came with a high resolution image. That sure makes design easier. The image is so clear I can see the cracks in the asphalt!

Howdy Morgans, Mike great explanation of finding grade. Funny story I was using a laser level at my house for a concrete pad I was pouring. I have an Invisible Fence around the yard and at the time I had a German Shepherd that stayed by my side....that is until I reached grade and the laser level went beep beep then solid tone at grade. Apparently she thought a correction was coming and immediately retreated away from the level.... Have A Day! ;~)

Ah yes, I thought your pad was a lot further along in the live stream last night, and isn’t that the walnut we see when Melissa is blading? Makes sense - all this was done yesterday before the live stream. Anyway, that fill packed and leveled up really nicely! No wonder you were doing the Tim the Toolman “Yeah” when you pull the bucket up with good stuff! Thanks for the explanation of how you did the rough grade determination. Nice and much handier tools. I’ve only used a level and transit on the farm - Dad had one so that was what we used. In our research, we used total stations and real-time survey-grade gps, but I didn’t do any setup on those. It’s fun watching your projects. About notifications... I stopped getting emails about uploads on the 13th, which appears to be a RU-vid action. However, I still get emails if someone replies to or likes a comment I have made. I also get the usual notifications on my phone about all things, including uploads. I hope that’s clear to you because I’m not sure it’s clear to me. 🤔

Mike when you put the electricity in for the woodworking shop area be sure to put a 200 amp service panel in there that feeds the shop exclusively. That way at the end of the day you can flip one switch, and protect all of your equipment from a direct lightning spike. I wish I did that in my shop because I go around unplugging individual pieces of gear. I could elaborate, but I know you are busy. Get in touch with me if you want to talk more about it. You also want a line or two going to a light, or lights in the shop so you don't have to flip a breaker for a light every time you walk into the shop.

Great video! Very simple explanation. Setting grade intimidates some people. As a surveyor it is one of my favorite jobs. I love watching it come together. There are only a few contractors in our area that are using the machine control so I still see a few of the old school operators hop out with their hand level and use my cut stakes to figure their grade (i.e. 2:1, 3:1 etc.) They get out measure from my stake and drop a rock and then sight to one of my grade lines and figure how much more to dig. Awesome video!

I was a contractor for 33 years and I had a cheap $10 sight level, but what I had was a old broke tape taped to a scrap 1x1. that way you could have your bench mark higher and didn't have to bend over or have the tape at the bench mark and you are thepole and yo just move from p;ace to placeand sight through the sight level.. In other words where ever you stand that is the measurment diferant to the beanch mark when the buble is level. After being retired for 10 years I still have my rotating levels for finch grade.

Actually has been used for centuries and very likely thousands of years. I have seen claims that the water level was used to build the pyrimids in Egypt. Some claim that is the first documented use of them, but I could not find a source for that. When I did a lot of suspended ceilings in commercial buildings, I had two pieces of clear plastic tubing about two foot long with one having a male garden hose fitting and the other a female hose fitting. Then I could just screw them onto both ends of a normal garden hose of any length anywhere and have a level to fit the job. Strap one end to the mark I wanted to hit, then raise or lower the other end to get the water to move up or down until it was exact. Since both ends are even due to gravity once the reference mark was correct with the bead of water in the tube the other end was ready to mark on the wall. The advantage of the site level Mike is using is that you only need one person. Water level can be done solo but works best with two people.
