Part 19: The 1991 Chevrolet (Chevy) Project Shop Truck gets a rear sway bar. But, it’s not just any store bought bar, it is a 2001 Chevy Suburban rear sway bar! A lot of people have adapted the OBS Suburban/Tahoe rear bars to the OBS trucks, but this is a step up from the old trucks to the NBS trucks.

Several key takeaways:
1) Not difficult, but does require some fabrication to mount the end links to the frame and the saddle brackets to the rear axle housing.
2) When mounting up the new bar, try to make it as parallel to the ground as you can.
3) The rear axle housing is 3” in diameter, so , look for axle saddle brackets that have that size. IF you cannot find any, consider using square or rectangular tubing and cutting the 3” curve out of it to make your own brackets.
4) When mounting the rear end links, be sure to angle the top of the end link to about the 12:30-1:00 position, similar to the factory installment.

If I have a 96 Tahoe would putting on a NBS swap bar do any difference?
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 2 года назад
If you already have a bar, then the difference would be minimal. IF you don’t have a bar, then yes, you would see a difference. Check under your frame. Trucks and SUVs are different. I’m sure it could be done, just have to get creative to mount.

Great Video, I purchased everything in the video. How much would you charge to fab up the brackets I’m in rockwall as well.

I no longer live in Rockwall, I now live in Sunset. That’s near Bowie.

@@laurencevillegarage would you be interested in Fabing the brackets. If I sent you the perches for the u bolts & the rear brackets for the frame

The rear brackets would be hard for me to do correctly without having the truck here to measure the length by. Bar should be basically parallel with the ground. Depending on what your suspension looks (stock height, lowered 2, 4, 6 etc) I would not be able to determine the correct length. There are some very capable shops in Rockwall/Garland area that might be a better choice.

Good video, I have a 97 two-door Tahoe, they didn't come with a sway bar because the gas tank is in the back, do you have any ideas that might work?
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 2 года назад
While I don't have a truck like yours to look at, I'm sure a bar can be fitted to it that would not interfere with the rear tank. Similar year Suburban had some bars that may work or make another years truck bar fit. It takes some creative thinking, but the attachment points are not that difficult to figure out. I'm sure it can be done, but without seeing what you have to work around I can't be too specific. Good luck with your project!

Does it make a difference when you're going around corners

Although the truck is not finished and therefore has not been driven yet...yes. A rear bar makes a very noticeable difference in handling. I plan on putting one on any OBS I have. As a side note, went to the salvage yard a few days ago and found a '93, half way stripped, but suspension intact. It had a Hotchkis Performance front and rear bar setup. Got it for cheap! Also pulled, what turns out to be a 3.73 limited slip rear end assembly for cheap as well. It pays to go scrounging around at your local yard!

Would this work on a 5/7 drop if the end link mounts were adjusted/shorter?
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 2 года назад
In a word...yes. After I put the motor in and finally put the truck on the ground and let the suspension settle, I had to raise the upper end link position about 1.5" for the bar to be parallel to the ground (with a 4" rear drop). For a 7" drop you may need to cut the end links (dog bones) and overlap them to get just the right position for the bar to be parallel to the ground then weld them up. Not a problem, easy enough to do.

What made you used 30mm over the 32mm?
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 2 года назад
I had the 30mm bar first when I ordered the frame bushings, then I got the 2nd bar. I didn’t want to order a second pair of bushings when I already had a pair that worked. I’ll use the other bar on the next project.

Mr Lawrenceville those dog bones for the rear sway bar look a little too long and they might hit the ground & bend/break if you are run over pothole or speed bump etc..just saying.
@laurencevillegarage
@laurencevillegarage 2 года назад
In the cover picture they may look that way. However, when installed and adjusted, the bar is parallel to the ground and the bar offers up 9.25" of ground clearance. The lower portion of the rear end has 8" of ground clearance. So, no issues at all.
