This is a very nice radio and its great to see it fully repaired for many years of happy service. It was also nice to see that you were able to obtain refurbished parts at a fraction of the price of the original part. Good all round repair. Thanks for making the video and sharing it with us.
Another VERY good amateur radio (HAM) repair. Explained so well, and in depth, that a service manual could NOT have done better. Warmest regards Wayne and Nina.
Really nice repair Peter. Good detain and explanation of what is going on. Good job. I have had . some good luck with that supplier. Glad your net is up my friend and thanks for the mention of my channel. 73
What you think it would last used transistor?? And separate bias wond do much as one will work harder then other and will die soon.. Matched set is MUST
Another Excellent repair on how to trouble shoot Amps and the most important tip I was totally unaware of, was refurb power transistors, Great Info! Thanks Peter, 73's Lloyd
Another great repair explained in detail. I used Lilly electronics a few weeks ago for a high dollar transistor and it worked just fine. I usually don't like to use used/refurbished transistors but the customer was hurting for money and said he would take a chance. I would buy from them again.
+MikesRadioRepair Hi Mike, yes I agree I don't like it, too. But the price difference is so huge you can't resist and finally this pills work. Thanks for watching and 73
Oh boy, another Yaesu repair. I love Yaesu radios especially since I now own a Yaesu 991a. I just hope the manufacturers used enough heat sync paste so the finals won't burn out. Seems this is a common Yaesu manufacturing problem. It seems that vertical channel MOSFET's are quite expensive to replace. I'm trying to find finals for my Yaesu FTM-3100. I hate when parts become non-obtainable. Buddy is another great technician from The Radio Shop. I watch a lot of his videos as well. Once again, another great video. I can understand the necessity of replacing two MOSFET's at the same time but it is cost prohibitive. Cheers & 73 from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee
bestes Fachwissen, kombiniert mit vorzüglichen handwerklichen Geschick ... ich freue mich auf die Reparatur meines FT 897 durch TRX Lab ... 73s de DL6RDE, Karl-Heinz
Very interesting repair, Peter. I purchased from Lilly Liu a few months ago, and the power transistor worked perfectly. I would not hesitate to recommend her. Glad to see you got the club's radio going again. 73...Dan
Good job as usual Peter! Matched FETs remind me of having to install matched 6JB6 finals in my Drake T-4XC transmitter. Drake had a jig set up to match them on their production line. I think it was Dave Jones in his latest video mentioned a friend of his describing a tube as "...a FET with a pilot light!" ;-) 73 - Dino KL0S
+Dino Papas Thanks you Dino! Yes the Drake T-4XC is still a fantastic transmitter. The pity is that this matched tubes are getting more and more expensive.. LOL yes it was Dave with a pilot light :-) All the best and 73's
At the end you used the computer screen to use a piece of equipment , I wanted to verify what I remembered you used for that , I thought you got a Signal Hound for that ? I also saw your video on the LP-100A , which confirmed to me to get one of those , I lucked out and found a dead one for reduced price and repaired it , another great piece of gear . Thanks again John
Bit late I know, but I would loved to see you solder that power transistor in. Exciting as it is to watch and listen to you on the trail of the faulty component I equally love to watch you solder them in. I want it all don't I, ha.
Hello ! Nice repair. The refurbished transistor looks more like it was taken from some other equipment cleaned and re-sold. I am not believing that it would be cheaper to do any repair inside the capsule than building a new one. The great thing is that this radio can have separate bias for each one and that saves a lot of money in repairing because most of the time only one of the finals is damaged. 73 and good luck in contest operation with it.
As always, your Vid's are interesting informative and fun to watch. It's nice to know in a planned obsolescence world there is still hope to keep these rigs going. Great work!
+VoltLog Hi, yes these RF pills are sometime very expensive especially when it comes to hight power. Thanks for watching and feed-back All the best and Cheers.
Another fine repair Peter. Wox, what a bargain. That final xstr for $20!I'll have to check out "Lilly Electrics" for myself and bookmark it for the future. Worth the money even if it is a dud.Again. Wonderful work my friend,73sTom
Great repair video Peter! Those transistors sure are pricey. I understand them not being able to spend the extra money for a matched set of transistors, but on such a nice, high-end radio I would have save the extra money to do it right. But the individual biasing controls are really nice. I really enjoyed this video and always learn so much from watching your videos. Thanks so much and 73! de Nick N9SJA
+Nicholas Hyer Hi Nick, yes fully understand that you would like to get it right.. But this pills are really expensive.. Thanks for watching, I'm glad that you like it. 73's
Great job there Peter.. Wow those are some really expensive transistors. glad you managed to find some suitable ones for a fraction of the price. Cheers friend John
+orbiter8 (John) Hello John, yes pretty expensive for a transistor but this types are by far not top end of possible price for a hf transistor.. but we are happy to get it managed for an acceptable price.. Thanks for stopping by my friend Cheers.
well done it shows refurbished transistors are just as good big difference in cost think how much money saved worth taking a chance peter another success :)
I am late to finding this video Peter, I know the bias current was originally 5a per device in Class A, I think that killed a lot of them, interesting to see you set them to 3a. I guess this is a revised figure.
Another thing to watch on eBay transistors like these is counterfeit parts. These are exactly the kind of parts that are showing up as counterfeit, especially on eBay.
Loved the video but why would you set one FET to 1.1A , and the other to 1A?. As far as I know, ALL fet PA have individual bias pots too, as a side comment.
Another very nice repair. Good explanation why you should always replace two final transistors. The extern powersupply is a good safety measure and a very helpfull tip. I noticed at timestamp 26:25 when you test both transistor current that the powersupply went into current protection and the voltage went down from 30V to 23V. Was this on purpose? I was interested what the class A, against normal mode, would produce on harmonics and IMD. Maybe a quick test is in order? Maybe other manufactures incorporate individual bias current settings. The refurbished transistor is another good solution but you have no guarantees. I enjoyd it very much and like to see more in the future. Best 73 FEY
+FEY Hi, no it was not on purpose it was still adjusted for on transistor current and with both it simply went into protection..Yeah should have taken the measures in AB operation as well.. Okay next time :-) Thanks for watching 73
How much is the peak current? If it's less than 20 amps a VRF152 should work. These are vertically diffused MOS transistors from Microsemi. New they are about $80 apiece. The reason for the transistor for this being so expensive is that it is obsolete.
help required peter can you help ive just replace a power plug on the back of the fp29 the wires were pulled out cant find anywhere which pins are 30v i think 13.98 v are in the middle
ok, I have the ft 1000 mp, not the MV. It has 3 3133 transistors. On the top of each one there is a diode which has heat sink compound on them attached to the case of each transistor. which has hardened. is that normal?
hi peter, how you has connected your spectrum analizer to achieve 60.0 dbm in the top of the screen.i have seen only a block dc at the input of the spectrum analizer.thank you for your master classes.
+Jose Miguez Hi Jose, well there is a 40db power attenuator in front of the SA input. I can tell the SA the correction factor of 40db after that I'm able to adjust for 60dbm no problem. Hope that helps as explanation.. Thanks for watching 73
Your videos are a great teaching tool for electronics lovers. I enjoy them very much. This video started mid-repair in that we didn’t see the troubleshooting at the beginning. Did this radio have just half RF output or did it not work at all? What were the symptoms? Thanks and 73 Paul W5GPA
Enjoyed the repair video very much thanks. The thought of being able to buy remanufactured rf transistors is a great idea and the difference in price is huge. Have you made any more trials on the Flir infrared camera add on?
+mac theknife Hi, thanks for watching! Yes the price difference is huge so we take the chance.. Nothing really new with the flir no real hidden short yet... 73
Very good video! How much would you charge for such a repair? I’m considering the purchase of such a radio and wondering if I can afford to maintain it.
Ugh. I do like the solid state. What I do not like is the fact that they crank so much power through ever shrinking components. These things cannot get rid of the heat the make, make them more susceptible to failure. Shrinking all the digital and low level stuff in a radio is ok. but when it comes to the power output, I would rather have a big bulky PA that is easy and cheap to repair than to have a small compact radio.
Hi there I have a ft1000 mp mk 5 It will transmits for about 4 to 5 minutes at 200 w and then it suddenly drops to about 100 w and the SWR meter goes high reading around 3. . Have you seen this before. ?
Hi Peter. Thanks for the video. I'm repairing my MarkV so I'm checking all the videos on the tube HI. I have drive, but no output. How did you check to see if only one FET was faulty please? 73 de OZ1IVA
Hello. And what should I do if after changing transistors I cannot come down with the current which is indicating in the service manual as the potentiometers are at their minimum?
Hello...:-) What do You think why these transistors fail??? I found them short circuited on many FT-1000MP mkV-s for no apparent reason. I changed them and radios didn't come back ever again. And this radios work hard in a contest environment. Just on 1 FT-1000MP MkV I found bad relay on LPF unit as a reason for blowing finals...but this is clearly seen with spectrum analyser and RL bridge..just check return loss on all filter units(it has to be more then 15dB on all LPF-s)...and sligtly bumping on the relays on top of them, you will see bad ones(in and out). 73...Kiko, 9A4WY
Well there are many possible reasons why this transistors fail and one possible reason is off course the situation you are describing here. Thanks for comment Kiko 73
ok so I have a crazy question. the transistors have what looks like heat sink compound, but it's not. what exactly is it? heat sink compound is softer, and with heat it may run off.
+Tom Smith Hi Fred, here is the Link www.ebay.de/itm/BLF147-Manu-PHILIPS-Package-RF-TRANSISTOR-VHF-power-MOS-transistor-/191046639453?hash=item2c7b445f5d:g:44QAAOxyRNJSjDLi All the best and 73's
"if you had too can you install transistors out of a 100w ver and just turn the gain down?" Would you be able to install a set of lower power transistors and just run it at 100w? if you had no options to get the OEM transistors?
+Matt K Matt, as I understood it right it is important that the transistor matches with the rest of the circuity that means the the maxium power is not the leading parameter... Hope that helps. All the best and Cheers
+MrVinamp Hi, I think they take this transistors out of faulty gear and clan wiring and print a new label on the housing that's it. Thnaks for watching 73
my ft991 had no heath compound thats why they died...i like the new ones 700 bucks 1 watt in 1 kw out sweet however 50 v at 50 amps sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet j
