Well Done 👌 you should consider shower panels, they are not that expensive weight is almost the same as plywood, and easy to install. You can find install vid here on RU-vid 😊
Looking great! Did I hear you say you were thinking of skim/plaster the wood over? It'll all crack, as may tiles that are over joins in the wood. Porcelain tiles might be strong enough but how about just using that plastic cladding that is so often found on narrowboats?
Hiya, I’ve binge watched all your vlogs where you’re attention to detail chimes with my OCD. Great to see the TLC you’ve given the boat. Just a quick question, I’m curious if you plan to re-black the bottom of the boat?
Thanks very much, I’m glad to have caught your attention 👍 tbh at the moment it’s a no. It’s not high enough off the ground to get under it as is and the next time it’s craned, it’ll be to put it in the water. It’s a full 10mm plate, untouched, and with it being flat there are no bits to rub out and leak like the springers v bottoms and with there being no air pockets it won’t rust, at least not like at the waterline
Oh wow thanks very much. I’ve not been back out to the boat for a while, but I’ve got most of my fresh water plumbing equipment ready, and I’ve got in mind my next few projects, there’s a lot of mental prep and it’s been nice to get a break over the winter but as it’s getting warmer I’m getting more and more pumped for a new season of work. Thanks for watching and commenting, there’s more on the way 😉
Hello mate, looking great! Just a quick one before you finish the walls think about where you are going to be screwing your shower, shower head, sink and anything else you're planning on screwing to the wall. You will need a decent bit of timber behind it to screw to! The mdf won't hold it. Making a cracking job if it!
good video. Could fill the voids in the bathroom wall with the insulation foam sheets, might stop a hollow sound and be more insulation and sound proofing.
Thanks very much 👍 Yh I thought about that, that would stiffen up the walls also. The walls are a little too thin though, 19mm cavity, and most places only have 25mm on the shelves. I was looking at ordering some 20mm celetex for under the floor, but found it tricky to get hold of unless you order a pallet. Some 10mm polystyrene would help with the things you mentioned though 🤔 good suggestion thanks 😀
@@olivellanarrowboat4319 maybe a 25mm and slice it...or just spray foam. Not a fan of rockwool but must be something you can use. Keep up the good work. Could do a curtain instead of a door also as its lighter so may not flex the walls as much.
Hello Oli, you have a 'room', its all progress. Sorry I cant offer any technical advice - I make wedding/birthday cakes, so that doesnt really cross over into narrowboats. Good idea to have a break and save money for the bigger things. Hope you have a good winter and see you in the next vlog. Best wishes Christine x
I dont know u at all, but iam so proud of u and wat ur doing!!! Iam by no means a pro builder, but i love diy! U dont need to spend a fortune on tools to get good results!! And u learn more by making mistakes, than doing it right first time!! Ur doing a grand job!!!
I called in at Kilworth today to chat with John in the office, I am looking for a boat such as you found, I have limited cash but I have plenty of enthusiasm, I built a campervan 2 years back, but I really would like to be on the cut, I had a walk around, and I saw your boat, it's a black one with the famous port holes with dodgy bits ah ah ah, John said you are a really nice bloke, pity you wasn't about, keep up the work.
I got real lucky with my boat, it came up on Apollo duck at 10pm, by 12am I’d gotten extra pics and arranged to see it, I drove 100 miles and paid a deposit by 10am. At that point I’d been looking around 8months and knew what a great opportunity it was so jumped on it. And Yh probably shouldn’t have gone over the boat with a wire brush, just sand paper, oh well live and learn, at least I got all the rust off the main body, I can paint it properly when it’s in the water and I can get it in the paint shed. The yard is good, it’s somewhere between the worst beer garden you’ve ever been in and a scrap yard, but they leave you alone and let you get on with it, I love the place It’s a bit of a trek so I’m cutting short the trips over winter, taking a bit of a break from the project, and trying to save a bit of money for the summer (it’s not working lol) but I’ll be about more towards the spring if you want to come have a look and have any questions. Good luck and happy hunting
😃 I’m not sure I could go through this again… maybe a new sailaway where there isn’t any rust to clean up first. But oh god yes I’d hope so. Two and a half years in, and it breaks down like this, I’ve done a year filming, 6 months cleaning up and a years progress building. 😉 but I’m not in a race lol I’m glad you like the videos & thanks for the comments 👍
If you are going to tile then you really dont want to be tiling on timber… I know a few people have some fancy ways of saying its fine but its never the best. Probably been in construction for 25 yrs now for what its worth. These days I use Orbry board from TFD online, you can fix the sheets directly to the ply and you’d only need 6mm, if you fixed it directly to batten you’d be better with 12.5 or 20mm Sheets come in 600x1200 or 2400mm Orbry is a brand similar to Wedi but way more cost effective. 100% waterproof and dimensionally stable and super lightweight!
And to this I have no idea tbh, I just wanted to build it. It’s more of a backup plan until I can’t afford to keep it, then it’s the choice, cash out, hope I break even, or sever ties with the land and step aboard, who knows 😉
Tiles tend to fall off walls in boats due to expansion/contraction of wood vs steel plus the vibration from the engine. We use shower panel, if you build square they are easy to fit with no grout to go mouldy plus they look more modern with hundreds of different finishes. Low height shower doors are usually necessary on narrowboats, Wesley windows have a good range and are great to deal with.
You may not need to tile. Look out for waterproofed bathroom wall sheets, which are used in caravans. It may save you some money and will definitely save you some time and effort.
I have a joiner mate who lives in Manchester, he is good at what you need to achieve, and he is adamant that he will never travel south to help me with joinery on a boat, I think you are doing real good, but a joiner would probably piss it in a 3rd of the time.
