Thousands of prisoners were incarcerated and tortured on the island. The former Yugoslav prison has been abandoned for around 30 years, and its buildings are falling into ruin. Few people remember the place or honor the victims.
The boat trip from the holiday island of Rab to Goli Otok takes 15 minutes. At the pier, there is a small souvenir shop. Music echoes from the restaurant of Igor Tomicic. It is the only truly intact building on the island.
From the pier, a paved road leads up a steep hill. On either side lie the former workshops where prisoners performed forced labor. Debris is scattered everywhere.
The "Kuglana," the bowling alley, was built by the first generation of prisoners so that the guards would have a place for amusement. "Here are a few things we managed to save," says Igor Tomicic, pointing to some bowls, cups, and the flag of Yugoslavia.
Visitors can also watch a short film about the history of Goli Otok. These films are the only documents in which eyewitnesses from the infamous early years of the camp can still be heard-such as Alfred Pal, a former partisan. During World War II, he had fought alongside Tito. Then, after Tito's break with the Soviet Union, he was suddenly suspected of Stalinist sympathies. On June 9, 1949, he was sent to Goli Otok for political re-education, as it was officially called. Alfred Pal:
