8th Gen Console Gaming: The Bunnyhop Review 

I still am freaked out by all the shit you got for the PS4 video. I shared it with some of my friends who are pretty knowledgeable about video games and they also flamed me for it. It's mind-boggling how defensive gamers are about video games. It's like video games are some sort of benevolent parent recently turned abusive.

To me early console gaming was about convenience and ease of use. PC was so complicated in comparison. When I was a kid, I had a Playstation for home console and I loved it, it was simple, pop the disc and start playing. Loading times where frequent but always under the minute mark. Next I had a PS2, just a simple to use but even better games. I still regard the PS2 as the best console I ever had. Then I bought a PS3 to play MGS4, and that's the time I felt thing started to go wrong. Multiple reasons to that: at this time I started playing on PC. I only had a small 4:3 CRT tv to hook my consoles into (the MSGS4 small fonts designed for HD displays where almost unreadable), The PS2 loading times where replaced with tens of minutes long updates and hard drive installations. All that waiting time I never had to cope with on the last generation was so frustrating, I might as well play on my PC. In the end I relegated my PS3 to my shelf and kept on playing on my computer that was just about more powerful, but most of all more convenient to use especially for online gaming. Simply starting a game on PS3 became too much of a hassle. Today, I am not interested in consoles at all, with the exception of portables like the 3DS that are still quick and easy to play with. I regard my home computer as every bit as superior to all 8th gen consoles. The big exclusive franchises I used to love to play on Playstation like Metal Gear, Grand Theft Auto and Final Fantasy have all made their way to the PC platform, so I have no incentive to buy a new home console at all. In fact, I am more interested in buying older consoles for retro gaming, arcing back to the times inserting a cartridge and push the power button was all you needed to start playing. I miss the time consoles were just instantaneously gratifying gaming machines and not pseudo home computer encumbered by unwieldy online and social features you don't need.

Backwards compatibility was what killed Consoles for me, I have hundreds of great games that I still like to play on my respective GOG and Steam accounts. I'm not about to just leave those behind so I can play the 4 or 5 mediocre titles already out. Graphics, prices, control schemes, that's all nice but the main reason I prefer PC is because I can download a copy of System Shock 2 and get it running in 20 minutes decked out with HD mods and modern controls. PC has no generations, games last forever on PC, and that's important.

Watching this made me realize just how good we have it on the PC.

I am a 95% console gamer, and most likely, always will be. That being said, you hit the nail right on the head. Console gaming has become so redundant, I almost want to give the entire hobby up, plug in my nes, and pretend that the last 10 years never happened. I subscribed to your channel, even with a larger emphasis on pc, because even with your editorials being very opinionated, it is still some of the best, objective, and flat out interesting content about the medium on the net. Keep on rocking in the free world.

For us PC gamers, Wii U is the only console worth a damn. It provides an experience which you can't really get on PC, while its competitors are just PCs but worse.

BloodBorne Persona 5 No Man's Sky if those games suck, well then I will know I made the wrong purchase

I know this is 5 years after the fact but seeing you scroll past P.T. and saying how there's nothing interesting on the PS4 is hilarious.

Literally the only reason I am glad I have a PS4 in 2015 is so that I can play the superior version of Persona 5. So far, the only reason I'm glad I have a Wii U is so that I can replay Bayonetta 2. I don't know whether or not this is a good thing, but with games like new Etrian Odyssey and Devil Survivor and Xenoblade remakes, I feel like the 3DS is actually the best platform to own this year.

My PS4 has been collecting dust for a long while, while my Wii U's seen constant use. It's definitely not whatever I expected to happen. It's unfortunate to see the Wii U selling so poorly when it has such a greater current library than the PS4.

Poor Wii U. Most underrated console in years. Complex, intense action games with Bayonetta 1 and 2. Games that don't even have a distinctive genre: Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, and Captain Toad. Fun multiplayer online and off with Smash, Kart, and Monster Hunter. Play all your wii games. Play everything from SNES to N64 to Neo Geo on the virtual console. A lot of indies. You don't even need a damn TV to play this thing, you can play it in your bed or on the shitter! All amounts to less than 10 million sales in 2.5 years.

The only AAA new games coming out for PS4 is Bloodborne and ..what else? X1 has Halo 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider at holiday..what else? Yeah..great generation thus far....

I don't usually comment on RU-vid videos, but this video (like everything from Bunnyhop) is so perfectly accurate. I have a high end gaming PC (which cost less than a PS4 or Xbone) and a Wii U, and I have sunk hundreds of hours into the wonderful games on the Wii U, but the other two consoles are just bad PCs with sub par new games and cash grab ports of last gen games.

You were spot on about the PS4, It was a great video. BTW are the PS4 download servers slow? I never thought about it until now but downloading games to a console is a hindrance, but thats also how its done on PC with steam, except my reaction is often "wow that downloaded quickly". :-)

The upside of this generation is that I'm playing old-ass platformers on my shitty cheap-ass computer and I get to develop a shallow superiority complex towards people with disposable income for buying expensive-ass games on expensive-ass consoles who are having less fun than I am.

Considering the kind of exclusives and features the XBOX series X and PS5 are lacking, this video has aged VERY well. I built my own PC a couple years ago (Before GPU shortages), and one for my wife earlier this year (When GPU prices started dropping), and we have not looked back. I sold my PS4 and my Switch is just gathering dust. Console gaming has become redundant.

I yelled "YES!" and "THANK YOU!" so many times during this video I'm pretty sure the neighbors think I'm having very polite sex. You really nailed how I feel about this console generation, especially the part about how damn near everything is coming out for PC. This generation of consoles is having such a hard time figuring out their identity thanks to the lack of exclusive titles and their inability to separate themselves from the last generation. Even the Wii U, which has done the best job of creating an identity, still has a lot of experiences that I feel could have been on the Wii. The key to being "next-gen" is by creating experiences that simply couldn't be possible on the last generation, not that the graphics are slightly better. Your video is awesome and you are awesome. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.

Comparing PC to consoles is like comparing a Ferrari and a Civic. You don't drive a Ferrari and be concern about the price of gas, you drive a Ferrari because you want superior performance. And not everybody have to drive Ferrari to be worth something, just drive what ever you like that you can afford. It's your money, do whatever you want with it. Don't judge the haves and the have-nots.

as much as i love the games available for nintendo i absolutely detest their online services i wish it was more like psn or atleast just plain easier to work with

i could not agree more. I love my Wii U and 3DS, and those get WAY more playtime than anything else. My PC is an absolute workhorse, and still runs everything I throw at it to an acceptable level, almost four years since I got it. I was SO happy when they revealed MGSV was coming to PC. PS4 and Xbox One would be incredibly redundant, even moreso than the 360 and PS3 were last gen.

It seems rather hypocritical to say that all the PS4 games are lackluster games that could have been done last gen just as well but with visual upgrades, while simultaneously praising Metroid Trilogy, Smash Bros and Mario kart for giving you "hundreds of hours of entertainment." Smash and Mario Kart iterated in no way that makes them feel like fresh next gen experiences and metroid Trilogy is literally a last gen experience that hasn't even been updated visually or given a better way to control it than the Wii Mote despite us now having a controller with two analogue sticks.

As much as I agree with you on some things, I love using my PS4 for games. Can't wait for Bloodborne either.

About modern electronics with initial download times as presents: A savvy parent does all that beforehand, so the kids can still plug and play.

I think George might be missing the point of consoles; people who prefer consoles buy consoles to play video games. Not every person who is into video games necessarily wants a beastly rig for a PC. Not every person who is into video games necessarily likes the input method for PC gaming. It's preferences, that's all. For a PC gamer, there is absolutely no reason to buy a console because Steam has essentially consolized the PC market for developers, meaning Metal Gear can show up on PC for the first time since... MGS2? That's a good thing, in my opinion. What a lot of people like George need to understand is that for many gamers, we pick the one console (or PC!) that we want and run with it. Every great game being a multiplatform release isn't a bad thing in my mind, it's a good thing. It means that everyone has access to awesome games like Hotline Miami 2 or Metal Gear Solid 5, and no longer are we, collectively, bound to a specific platform in order to enjoy the games we want. Essentially, consoles and PCs aren't that much different than say, deciding what brand of DVD Player you want. So long as it does what it needs to, I think most people couldn't give less of a shit. Good video as always, though, George. I hope to see more.

I think you absolutely, 100% nailed it, and I'm what you might refer to as a "console fanboy". You also highlight exactly why I have not, and likely will NEVER buy a PS4 or Xbox One.

i think the reason also for a decline in enthusiasm for console gaming is in part due to the the emergence of steams' rise in popularity the last five years, it has literally come up from nowhere which in turn has led to an renaissance in pc gaming, this has in my mind has pretty much spoiled the console party.

My parents refused to let me get a console when I was a kid as a means to prevent me from playing games, but permitted play on the computer. This had the unintended effect of keeping me on PC gaming and I haven't been tempted to switch since.

Honestly, ever sice the 6th generation, consoles have stop being the beautiful plug and play machines they've always been and started becoming overly complicated PC's. If by some miracle they manage to squeeze out a 9th generation of consoles, I bet we'll have to deal with virus protection software.

I miss the time when each console had its roster of exclusive games, and its peronality or feel to it. The experience of putting on a PS1 disk and being instantly greeted by that startup sound. Or the PS2's stylish, atmospheric, misterious menu waves and wind ambient music. It had a feel to it, a personality. It was a games machine. You'd start it up, get that intro, listen to the droning sound of the ambient music, like an empty canvas for new adventures, put the disk in, and play. Nowadays the concept of a console is just redundant, when most games are cross-platform, and they're all trying to be PCs by focusing on social interactivity and user-friendliness. Now menu themes need to sound like lounge music - nice and tame - and everything needs to feel fresh and friendly, with light, cheery colors. They all have to be all-encompassing and as bland as possible, so that it feels like a computer. You wouldn't even dream of having a new console with the PS2's atmoshperic and slightly dark music, as well as with its completely black background with floating blue crystals creating an analog clock. No, that would give the console too much personality. It has to be generic and to the point, otherwise how would you connect to your facebook friends and access spotify on it?

looking at the PS5 Launch now, from the perspective of someone who owns a PC and Switch this all still resonates. looking at the PS5 launch titles I struggle to have enthusiasm.

For someone who has run a "dual setup" (gaming PC and a current gen console) for quite a while (since 1997), I'll have to agree with pretty much everything that has been said. Last gen was a rather depressing gen for consoles, and my own console has mostly been gathering dust, mainly seeing use when friends visit (this still feels like the main strength of consoles, couch multiplayer, which is mostly more comfortable to do on a console, even though that gap has shrunk a bit with the slew of great local co-op indies like Monaco). The current gen is just dire, I've actually looked for a reason to get a current gen console, and the only one I could possibly justify getting is a WiiU. It feels like the amount of notable exclusives for consoles are shrinking more and more (while PC still holds near monopoly on certain genres, so the exclusives there are plentiful), making consoles mostly redundant. Heck, they're not even cheaper than a gaming PC. I got through all of last gen with a computer that cost just over the price of an Xbox 360 (and far less than a PS3), right at the start of that console generation. It looks like the same thing is pretty much doable in this generation.

You never mentioned the budget conscious gamer, where it costs upwards of 1500 dollars to future proof your PC for a few years, 500 gets you into consoles and the cycles are 6-7 years now. That's reason enough, no?

2 hours to setup WiiU?! One of main pros of consoles and handhelds over PCs is plug and play mindset. Even reinstalling windows and all programs to make it ready for games/work takes less time.

I never got how people get consoles as soon as they come out in the first place. my friends always joke about when I just got a last gen console when the new ones came out. they got new consoles $300+ that needs constant updates and patches and lack games exclusive to them. when I just got an Xbox 360 for $50 and all the halo's and metal gears (except for solid for some odd reason) for $20.

As someone who doesn't have a gaming PC and didn't play much from the 7th generation of consoles, I'm actually quite enjoying my PS4. I got to play all the last-gen hits like The Last of Us, as well as enjoy quite a few great indies. With that said, if I was a PC gamer, I would probably not be playing my PS4 that much. Great video as always George.

*Fun Fact*: Custom Moves are actually tournament-legal. And Omega stages aren't really used that much compared to the likes of Battlefield, Smashville, Town & City, and Lylat Cruise.

Nintendo and PC is the best combination

Okay so this is really, really simple in concept. Consoles are for people that don't want to spend money on PC gaming. SHOCKING, I know. So yes, of course you, someone who PC games, is going to say "hey, console is redundant." But me, who has used the same PC for at least 4 years and hasn't upgraded a single thing on it (I know, I mean how can I do that???? I'm behind the times GASP), I am more than happy with what it can do. I don't see the point in investing in updating the PC. My PC will also have shitty issues at the best of times. I simply don't want to have to update the Graphics card for a game, then to find out my memory, hard drive and RAM are now not sufficient to play what I want. I don't want to have to worry about playing a game a year from now being able to be played on my PC because of the fact that specs for a game have changed. I can play both Witcher 2 and 3, and a huge amount of other games, without having to do a damn thing other than buying a console, and I got Witcher 2 for free with a 50 dollar subscription. I like the idea of spending some money at one time to have a machine that will last me at least 6 years without me having to change a fucking thing on it to be satisfied. I don't have to upgrade anything, as everything made for the machine will work on it. I'll likely never have to worry about the processor not working, or having to close programs on it to play a game, nor will I have to worry about sudden lag for no reason, at least not nearly as much as the time I've played PC games. I'll never have to come back and turn on my console and wait for 5-10 minutes while it catches up because it was in a sleep mode and is having trouble now. I won't have to do a single one of these things. I prefer this to PC, as PC has been a lot of hassle for me for my whole life. Consoles are plug and play. PCs aren't.

Of course it's redundant to have both a gaming pc and a ps4, especially on release. Consoles are supposed to be a cheaper counterpart to gaming pcs.

Even though I have yet to fully get into PC gaming (building a gaming PC this year), I fully agree with this video. I have had little desire to get an XboxOne or PS4 as the exclusives just aren't there to justify my purchase PC+Wii U is without a doubt the best combo this generation.

I've said this before elsewhere, I'll say it again here. The only consoles worth buying ate Nintendo ones, and that's because their libraries are all exclusives.

I agree the current ps4 exclusive games just aren't really with it. My reason for buying it was for bloodborne now and when they are released Persona 5 and Kingdom Hearts 3. That being said the time between those games is rather large and more than likely I will continue to use my ps3 and Pc more than my ps4 until then.

2016, and I still don't have a PS4 or Xbone. If I get anything at this point, it will be a WiiU. What the hell is wrong with this generation? I can't even work up the motivation to pirate anything on my 3DS, let alone buy anything. Two years in, and I still only own 3 games for it. The Vita has ended up being a much better purchase, but it's nearly dead in the water outside of Japan. And the WiiU is still selling like freeze dried cat turds despite having the best, and only real library of exclusive games. Some of which actually look fun. (Bayo 2, Splatoon, XenoBlade).

1 year and 2 months later...and i still agree 100% My parents my sister and her boyfriend this christmas bought a PS4 for me, which was really appreciated, but if it was for me i would have waited a long time. The games i can't wait for the PS4 are all titles that are still in development. Deep down, FF7 remake, The last guardian, Horizon zero dawn, and even Shenmue 3, which i'd love to play on console. But for now the only 2 games i played for real are "Bloodborne" (...can't describe it's awesomeness ) and "Destiny: The taken king" (...can't describe how standard and "meh" it can be) Thank god for Salt and Sanctuary, which ended up to be an incredible game of which the PC port is still nowhere to be seen. A couple of months ago i was even considering buying Dark souls 3 on PS4; but Loading times and 60 frames on PC made me change my mind and thank god for it, because after having finished it multiple times on PC i managed to try it on a friend's console and, while still perfectly playable, it definitely felt a lot more clunky

Also, I just want to wish you luck in the coming weeks/month, George. Between games like Cities: Skylines, Bloodborne, Pillars of Eternity, and others, it's bound to be busy for you. I don't know if you'll review all those, or others. But if you do, good luck, man. I appreciate the content.

too bad you're not hyped, but that's the price of being able to choose the best platform for a game you want to play. just keep in mind, it's not true for everyone or else consoles would not be selling as much... as for the Wii-U, it may have the better first-party library, but without 3rd-party support, it's not going to be the first choice for a console-only gamer...

I actually picked up a Wii U for local multiplayer. It was kind of a disappointment. Everyone was confused by the different controllers and the setup time was terrible. Mario Kart 8 has four different control schemes--Wii remote D-pad, Wii remote motion, Tablet thumbstick, and Tablet motion. Throughout the night we discovered small differences: items were mapped to different buttons depending on which controller you were using. Same for jumping, drifting, and doing tricks. We gave up after an hour of asking "how do I X?" and getting three different responses. At least I don't own a PS4!

This gen has been somewhat disappointing so far. Still considering picking up a ps4 for mgs5, FFXV, and KH3 though.

Even as a PC gamer I just cannot stand the elitest mentality of other PC gamers. Still, you brought up many great points that I wholeheartedly agree with I say this because I've had to deal with dickheads first-hand that ridiculed me, day after day, for playing on console, and I think that may be part of the reason why your old PS4 video was downvoted; it might have been a push-back mechanism against the "PC Master Race" trolls that were popping up left and right just a couple years before the PS4 was announced

I rewatched and is amazing how the wii u just flunked and the PS4 still has a lot of fun games to play specially the exclusives

I'm not sure I understand why you bought a PS4 to play MGSV. We all knew it was coming to pc since last year's E3.

It's actually really a breath of relief to see someone else that went through my exact experience with consoles. Past console experience: owned a SNES, PS1 and PS2 along with a bunch of handhelds. It was good and fun. Bought an Xbox360 because it was cheaper at the time, red ringed within a month, spent more money than i'm willing to admit to fix it only to have it red ring within a week again. I just gave up on console gaming after that altogether and have been only getting more and more proof that my choice was the best one at the best time. I could ramble on about my reasoning behind my opinion but it lines up almost perfectly with George's. Thanks George, for... well having some common sense and not falling for the manipulative practices the AAA gaming industry likes to expect us to just accept and demand. Maybe it's because older gamers grew up in an age where most console gaming was simple and straightforward, but I really feel bad for anyone that started with the xbox generation being their starting point into the gaming community.

So you have a particular taste for games and you blame the PS4 for having different kinds of games? You mention that there isn't much interesting in the demo-list, but many games don't have demos (sure its not great but thats a different discussion). The PS4 has some nice excusives but you are forgetting you already own a pc so you are not limited to what the PS4 has to offer. You also seem to forget a few exclusive games that are available. But like i said, they might not be of your taste. Thats all fine but you seem to want to blame the PS4 for everything, that just doesn't seem fair. Plus you seem to be blaming games for what they never said they would. The Order was never about unique new gameplay, it was about graphics (much like Ryse on X1) And by the way, the Xbox one has more AAA exclusives right now. But if you only like fighting games and games with dungeons or whatever, yeah you probably will not have a lot of fun with your consoles. But if you like racing, sports, action adventures and open world games, then consoles offer a lot more. Its not that you don't have a point and the first year of the new consoles hasn't been weak, but i also was surprised by the fact that if i don't agree with you, i must be thinking that you are paid by competitors. Wat kind of idiotic point is that?

I have to agree with you. We're a year and a half into next-gen and there's NOTHING out there that's really stellar and "must-buy" for any of the consoles, I don't think (though I may be wrong, I don't own any of them as of yet, but I do pay attention to news and reviews and such) let alone just being significantly different than last-gen. I'm sure it'll happen eventually, but for now, there's no major reason to own them, minus maybe the Wii U for reasons you stated in this video. Another awesome video, George. The wii u is doing the best job of being a console.

Pitch perfect, basically: Xbone doesn't exist except as maybe a passing joke; PS4 is like a shadow of a PC, if a PC only played trash and a few better looking last gen games; and the Wii U is held up surprisingly strongly by a handful of awesome games, but crippled by Nintendo's nonsensical online and interface and peripherals. And above all else: Everything is Worse than generations prior.

I generally play on console because consoles themselves are cheaper than gaming computers. A console that will run all the games for that console is about $400. A reasonable gaming PC is at least double that, if not $1000+. I can barely afford a console's $400 price tag (and in fact only got my PS4 as a Christmas gift from my whole family), so a quality gaming PC is right out. And what I can afford probably can't run most nextgen games, or at least can't run them well. Maybe I've just had bad experiences with terminally underspeced laptops, but I'd rather know for certain that my machine will run the game and not have to worry about specs. But I do understand why people who can afford gaming PCs would choose PC. There are very few console exclusives of note, and with indie games, steam, and MMOs, PC gamers have access to way more content. (Though that doesn't necessarily argue for a dedicated gaming PC as due to the lesser graphical requirements of most of those games, I can probably run most of them on my regular laptop--I've never had any problems running Undertale or Star Wars: the Old Republic on this laptop). So, is it worth it to have a dedicated gaming PC and a console. Probably not, in the same way having a both PS4 and an XboxOne is basically redundant. But I think it's easy to forget just how expensive quality gaming PCs are, and that sometimes consoles are actually the "budget" option.

Here's my problem with nintendo. It's not really their fault entirely but no one brings it up, so I will. The kind of fun you have with friends on the wii u, is the same you have with friends while playing a board game, or watching the game together, or even just sharing stories. I wanted a wii badly, and (After much begging and pleading) finally got one. The problem was, without a brother or sister or friends that weren't busy, the console just sat there. Even with skyward sword I had, there wasn't anything not directed towards single player action that was repayable. Even then, my friend purchased a wii u. Out of the time he's had it (over a year now) he's played it maybe a couple dozen times. Out of those times, 20 of them were with friends playing smash brothers. This was the only thing my friend and his brother wanted, and he now just uses it to draw on the tablet. Nintendo can't hold on to the idea that it's a party console and still remain relevant without changing it's ways for very long. After all, how fun is it to play a board game by yourself, even if you have a.i that will play with you?

After being bashed years ago for doubting this gen, George is redeemed! While it can take years for developers to master the nuances of any console's hardware, I have to agree with Super Bunnyhop that we seem to be experiencing diminishing returns, and this cycle seems to be elongating. I hope Bloodborne will show us whether we can expect quality releases on the PS4 in the near future.

I own both a Gaming PC and PlayStation platforms (got PS4 on launch), and honestly I prefer to play on a console over PC's I know shocking. To me I view consoles the same way I view Cell Phones and Tablets, a PC can do everything a Cell Phone can do and do it better, but cell phones have there convenience that makes us have them and the same thing goes to consoles, sure that convenience is not enough to some people (like you George), but to allot of other people (like myself) it does. Again while I may not fully agree with your opinions, I fully respect them and I look forward next video. p.s. I disagree with the Wii U, personally I think the PS4 is best system, but thats just my opinion.

PS4 is trash, no backwards compatibility.

I was primarily a console gamer up until a couple of years ago when I decided to upgrade my PC instead of buying a new console, and I don't think I could ever go back definitely one of my best decisions in a while.

I feel the same about this actually. The whole point of a next generation of consoles is to have hardware necessary to host gameplay that was not possible on the previous hardware. This can only wow people so many times before the Law of Diminishing returns knocks. The core experience should matter, not just awesome visuals. As you said: redundant.

I am tired of the PC elite stuff. You want to know WHY I game on consoles mostly, it because I get to own the physical disc. I don't do digital downloads, I am NOT giving up my consumer rights just to please these companies. I always buy the physical game, ALWAYS and if it comes digital only I don't buy it. Simple as that. I want the physical disc, something you basically can't get anymore with PC's (well barely, most are on steam and are digital only). It's really that simple, graphics mean jack shit to me, framerates mean nothing to me. I just want to own and play the games. Once the consoles do digital only like the PC, I am done, I am walking away.

Console users have already proven they can't be trusted with the right of an opinion by being console users.

It's funny coming across this in 2017. The PS4 is now a juggernaut with well received exclusives coming out seemingly every month. Also, the "game" part of Destiny was (and still is) so much better than its story it kind of hearts my brain that you even slightly praised it by comparison. I still argue Destiny's gunplay and core gameplay is its strongest asset, as pretty as it is.

PC, Wii U, and 3DS is the winning combination for gaming enthusiasts atm. Also some retro stuff like SNES, Genesis, N64, and PS2.
