When I listen back to shows of my own playing, it's mainly to hear what went wrong, and figure out how I can improve the next time around.
Once in a while you get a few moments that really stick out as being super positive, and as hard as it is to listen to ones self in the first place, it's even harder to praise your own playing without sounding like an ego maniac.
But it's just as important to recognize the good parts as is it the bad. I want to be able to get back to the place of freedom I find myself in from this solo back in 2022 with Bob Reynolds, and by breaking down the performance I'm able to give myself some great pointers for the future.
Let me know if you dig this recap style video, and let me know if there's something specific you'd like me to break down in the future.

Lovely video series idea, looking forward to more of these! Any chance you could upload the relevant footage for each of these episodes as an unlisted video in the description? Or something like that, just so we could go and listen to the whole moment uncut after hearing your thoughts on it. Just my idea, cheers.

i think im going to start recording my every playing session. I'm relatively new to jazz music and mostly play metal gigs. A year ago I played at my first jazz festival and thought I sounded cool (even managed to solo over complex chords), but recently I rewatched the performance video and almost died from cringe.... Walking bass is off the key, sloppy articulation etc ect. BUT this cringe feeling is actually useful because it shows that I see mistakes and I've grown as a musician in the last year. Cringe feeling -> proud feeling

Dear Janek, I can't thank you enough for all the things I've learned listening, watching and practicing thanks to you. I'm reading effortless mastery by Kenny Werner and I wonder if you practiced "the steps to change". If so, do you have any advice to "get in the space" ? How do you apply these exercices on the bass ? I find it very difficult to detach and observ, in the practice room and on stage.

Hey Janek, great video brother, the biggest think I notice about your playing (I’ve been watching for over 20 years) and what I’m striving to attain is a serious level of musicality, lyrical phrasing and thematic development with decent time and tone. IMHO chops are boring & to me shows a lack of ideas and harmonic understanding though they have their place at certain points. The way you’ve developed this almost voice like soloing style is so inspiring. I’ve been transcribing lots of Metheny because of you who has these qualities in spades. Again John Patitucci, Skuli Sverrisson and Jimmy Johnson also have this thing which I’ve been trying to emulate for decades.

I may be weird like this, but I actually prefer lo fi live camera footage to a soundboard mix sometimes. There's something about the sound coming out of real speakers and mixing in the air to create that live sound. And bass always sounds so much ballsier with a live sound.

It definitely gives you a better idea of reality. I do wish I could find a better solution for placing the camera somewhere in the audience to get that perspective, but this will work for now.

I play in a radio orchestra for the past 30 years…. Live music is the only real music. Love what you do Janek!
