Episode 8:
"Laksamana"
performed by Sining Kambayoka Ensemble (SKE)
Performance Date : 8th of September, 2013
Performance Time : 19:30 -- 20:00
The play entitled "Laksamana" is a dance-drama episode based on the full-length play entitled "Maharadia Lawana", a Philippine Ramayana Epic story. The story focused on the birth of Laksamana by Potri Langkawi (the Queen of the East). Laksamana was the king of the monkeys that ruled the animals in the woods in the epic story.
One afternoon, Radia Mangandiri went out from the Torogan to look for their rice fields. His wife Tuwan Potri Malaila Ganding saw the deer with golden horns, grazing in the cogonal field. She ordered her husband to catch the deer with golden horns. Radia Mangandiri has decided to chase the deer with golden horns until such time the deer with golden horns defeated the king. Radia Mangandiri asked help from his brother Radia Mangawarna but the golden deer split into two. One of the deer with golden horns attacked and chased Radia Mangawarna and they both were lost in the woods.
Radia Mangandiri was tired and rested under a big tree and he was dreaming as he slept. In the dream he fought a carabao and he was gored by it and one of his testicles was thrown to the east where Potre Langkawi, Queen of the East, swallowed it thinking it was a precious stone. Potri Langkawi became pregnant and hid in the lamin. She gave birth to a monkey, who she named Laksamana.
Meanwhille Radia Mangandiri, who was shocked by his dream jumped and touched his body and realized that truly he had one testicle lacking, and it seemed he was hurt. When he jumped, he saw his brother Radia Mangawarna crying and both of them cried.
The dream of Radia Mangandiri was true. Laksamana, the monkey son of Potri langkawi, asked his mother who is father but she answered she herself doesn't know. Laksamana was confused as it was very strange and decided to look for food in the forest and he jumped from tree to tree over the mountains and reached the west. While jumping from one tree to another he fell, and he fell between Radia Mangandiri and Radia Mangawarna. Laksamana recognized Radia Mangandiri as his father so as to Radia Mangawarna as his uncle.
Laksamana introduced himself to Radia Mangandiri that he was his son to Potri Langkawi, the Queen of the East. Radia Mangandiri remembered his dream and realized that it was true. They went to the Torogan for a celebration. As to Laksamana, he metamorphosed into a very handsome datu (prince).

No, Mindanaon and other Visaya tribes and it's culture are underated because some Filipinos especially in Luzon only showcases Igorot tribes which isn't even that rich (what I meant for this because Mindanao and Visaya tribes have Rajahs and Sultan, they even have ancient scripts originated and inspired by the Indian Brahmi scripts), the Mindanawon even today the pre-colonial culture and traditions are still preserve.

Aren't the Philippines a Latino, Hispanic nation? How do they have the Ramayana dance?

PH version is derived and influenced from the Hikayat Seri Rama from the neighboring Malays. it went further indigenization to suit local indigenous Maranao culture and worldview. despite colonization, the Maranaos preserved it.

Honestly, I feel bad to the one doing the chant! you could at least do a research on how to do it properly, where to pause and when to pitch your voice high and low. As native Maranao I grown up listening to my grand mother doing it every time she tells us a story. It gives you a feeling of nostalgia. The concept of the chant is not just to tell a story but also to captivate the feeling of the audience with your voice. The way how he do it is kind of disturbing. Sorry for that!

Every Onor has their own way of doing the Bayok. The one who did the chant is a well respected researcher and Artistic Director who is hailing from a family of Onor in the town of Rumayas, Maguing.

Ramayana doesn't exist in Luzon and Visayas and we'll never know if they used to, since a significant part ot our pre colonial history and culture is lost due to the Spanish colonization.
